This is one of my first reviews so.. don't go hard on me and my english skills (thanks).

Watched the drama for the actor. I never read the manga, never heard of this drama, so zero expectations. At first it looked really interesting as to where it'd go with all the supernatural stuff, all the powers and Gods, their world and so on.. all I can say is what a sad love story! (and pretty boring, actually). There was nothing interesting or intriguing about the plot whatsoever. I can point out a few things I didn't like.

The main thing I was disappointed by was the villain (?). Call him what you want to call, I expected more fighting scenes, more action, more revenge, maybe a death of some sort. I expected clash of two worlds as the enemy was a half-God creature. All I got was some jealous scenes, one meaningless death and disappointment.

The drama is based on supernatural creatures. Gods.. waiting the whole drama for Habaek to show his powers and use them in some way, waiting for some nice CGI moment with water, some scenes in Gods' world. This drama is not for those, who like supernatural stuff, because for the most part, there's nothing like that in it! Waiting is what got me upset and I almost dropped this drama lol.

The only thing I liked were the first few episodes. They were funny and interesting, but as the drama went on, it became boring to the point where I could tell what will happen. And guess what.. I guessed almost everything right. I'd say it's not the worst drama I've ever watched, not the best either. I'd say it's an easy watch, something to be played in the background when you're doing stuff. It's not a drama where you have to connect the dots to make a conclusion, there's literally not much in it.

All in all, I'd never rewatch it, unless I'll ever run out of dramas to watch (not anytime soon). The plot and the way they tried to "include" supernatural abilities in the story is underwhelming. I was disappointed, so a solid 4 from me.

P.S. I know they based it off of a manga, so I don't know the original story. Because of this, take my review as things I'd like to change.

Been watching dramas for years and this was.. kind of disappointing, yet one of my favorite dramas. I honestly watched it because of Lee Jun Ki and you know, he's the kind of actor that with his character he forms the drama in a way, that even tho I already know what will happen from the start, he still makes it interesting to watch and finish it. Maybe that's why I didn't lose my interest in it, but I'm glad I didn't. Even tho the story is banal, I loved the acting at least of the main cast and this drama itself is very easy to watch. But I think if you're looking for action or romance here.. It doesn't have a lot of that in it.

Who doesn't love Kyungsoo? I guess others too, the same as me, watched this drama because of him. And.. *slow clap*

The plot. The plot is not what I expected at all. It's not overwhelming or underwhelming. Everything's just right and perfect. Everything's timed correctly. I loved the emphasis on the chinese proverbs (I mean as it should be). I loved how unexpected and exciting things were from the first episode. The flashbacks were at the right moments. It was funny to watch as the story unfolded bit by bit, which was not only uncovering the past, but we got the present and some moments letting us know what the future will be for the characters of the drama. The only disappointing thing for me were the moments right before the ending. The battle between the Crown prince and the Vice-President Kim was underwhelming. I've guessed it all. However it was really nice to see that a villain who wanted all the power and riches even after death wanting only good for his children. This was a really nice detail to the story. I guess they wanted to show that even a monster like Vice-President Kim was a human being and cared about his children.

Acting/Cast. Oh let me tell you, the cast for this drama is amazing. I did like D.O's acting in Hello Monster. After that, I never saw anything else, any dramas or movies with him, so this was surprisingly good! I really like the aura he gives off, it fits the Crown Prince's character so well. Also the chemistry between Nam Ji Hyun and Kyungsoo was amazing. She's an amazing actress and I was surprised at how well she acts. From the other actors, I really liked the acting of Han So Hee, Kim Ki Doo, Jo Sung Haa and others.

Music. Spot on. I guess it's hard to miss with music since this is a historical drama. Keeps up the mood of the situations.

Rewatch Value. I already rewatched this drama as I'm writing this. So it's truly worth rewatching. I wouldn't say it's for everyone, but I like to rewatch movies and dramas, so I watched it again and I fell in love even more.

Overall. If you're looking for a drama that makes you think, has a great love story and in general a plot with some comedy elements - this drama is for you. You don't have to like history to like this drama as it's more based on the relationships rather than the politics only (politics are included in the drama but not emphasised. However, social status is emphasised a lot knowing this IS a historical drama). Good drama to watch in your free time, amazing drama to make you fall in love with the actors, music and the story. One of the best ones I've watched.

Didn't like the ending, didn't really liked the cast, as if there was no chemistry between main male and female actors, but what bothers me the most is that it was pretty much useless. I was hoping one of them would die in the end or something different would happen (I'm a fan of sad endings or some type of endings that aren't happy with this type of storyline), but instead of sad ending they put useless ending instead which destroyed everything I've watched from the first episode.
Would never rewatch this drama, would not recommend to anyone. This is only good as a background if you're doing something else, not a drama to go very deep into trying to understand what's happening when in the end it's a total flop.

Looking back I was such a fan of this drama! I watched every single episode with excitement, but this was at 2014. I recently rewatched it, because I forgot I actually saw this and.. I know, maybe it's because I've already seen The Heirs, but now looking at it, I think it was the hype and not the actual drama that gave it a place in the top dramas list in the first place.
When it first came out, this type of story was in every drama. Now.. I think the same. It's banal and boring, but the cast either makes the story interesting or not, and in this case it was what saved this drama. The cast was on point, Woobin's role was fitting for him, Shinhye's too, supporting roles were in suitable places which made it interesting to watch. Yeah, the music was dramatic and in some scenes very unnecessary, but I think it suits dramas in that time, when "drama overload" theme was going on and they 360ied on every frkn kiss or accidental touch :D Now it;s a bit better, but I would love to see remake in the future of this drama with the same cast.
All in all, back then I loved it, now it's just cringy to watch it.

This was my first ever Korean historical drama and I've watched it only recently, because I tend to stay away from dramas which are hyped up which makes my expectations go waaaay above and I get disappointed in the end (it happened with "You are beautiful" for me).
I actually didn't expect this drama to be so good! The acting was on point, the music was on point, everything seemed fine, until the very ending, which I didn't like at all and yet it makes me wonder that maybe they put it this way for this drama to have another "season" or something, which would make sense. But in the end the ending was different from what I had expected and that is one of many reasons why this drama is so great.
Truthfully, I watched it because of Baekhyun, but I ended up falling in love with Lee Jun Ki! And I love IU even more now, they're such a great couple and their chemistry is just too perfect to be true. Overall, 9 out of 10. I'm looking forward to see more of Jun Ki and IU together in the future dramas :)
