Xiao Zhuang Epic is by far the best one in many ways. This remake just isn't great. The storyline is bad. The acting from the actress could use more improvement. Everyone else is better at acting. There's also no chemistry at all between the leads. Right from the opening scene, they could of tried to add some wrinkles on to her face to show aging.The new adaption, "The Promise of Chang'an" is better choice to watch. Even though this one is also annoying depressing to watch. Sometimes, I wish there would be fresher ideas. Somehow if the main female would cry less haha. They are so depressing and weak. Can some of them have a fighting spirit?

After seeing all the adaptations of this series. I don't know if I particularly like any better or if any of them is better. There are some aspects of each that I like. In most case, the main actress is always mistreated so badly. She doesn't or can't stand up for herself and needs a guy or someone to look after her. And so what I like from this adaption is that she eventually change over time in a sense.Not sure who is more a jerk in all of these adaptions. Maybe this guy in this series. Nothing is romantic about it. It is a bad example of a healthy and or ethical relationship.
I am mostly happy to see Leanne Liu. I remember growing up watching on the same screen. She was huge.

Light to watch
I gave this a try because I wanted something light. The storyline especially in the first few episodes is definitely a bit steamy for this genre haha. Sometimes, I appreciate a more traditional take on period tv show like how in some shows, the women are wearing sleeves clothes. The series focuses on glamouring the men making somewhat less masculine for me. Anyway, good chemistry, something different to watch for sure. I recommend you give this a try.P.S. I really like the introduction music.

Overall, this is not a bad series. It is just rather unnecessary long. It has good acting, chemistry between the main leads, action scenes and storyline. The series started out promising as a light watch, simple story but then it dragged out with like when you open those Russian dolls. Never ending. Sometimes, our life is stressful and we look to cinema for relieve before we get back to life. Please let the good guys have a win win. After suffering for over 25 or 30 episodes, they need a break.
