Yuan Fang was appointed to investigate the weaponry case (Muyang is illegally trafficking state's military weapons and selling for personal gains). He dies on YeLi's wedding day and we see him in flashbacks of MXY and Li's POV. After he found the evidence, while on the way to Emperor, he was killed by Prince Li and his gang including Red Fox. Prince Li's intention is to let the weapon trafficking cause a rift between Muyang and Queen Dowager so when everyone is fighting and falling out, he can claim the throne. Since Muyang is suspected for the weapons case, most think he killed Yuan Fang to bury evidence. MXY while investigating finds Red Fox due to his green eyes and Li jumps in to save his loyal aide.
