I too did hope they were happy at the end, which is why I was okay with the ambiguous ending... I mean, to be honest, I am usually not only when I don't dislike the ending I am going to get, if I would dislike it, like in this case... well, give me an ambiguous ending, please ;)

I guess that for the ambiguous ending... there is the "conceptual level", and then there is me wanting very much the two of them to be happy, and preferring an ambiguous ending where I can imagine that they are happy ;)
