I'm surprised people still scolding SS, because she not dying from happiness that hot general loves her. I thought that this drama amazingly shows pov of SS and LBY, so its very easy understand both of them. Every their fight you never cant say its 100% LBY or SS fault.
One very important theme of novel and drama is power inequality in relationship, SS didn't happy about marriage with LBY at first, not because she thinking he's bad, and LY very good, but because she thought LBY too good for her, he older, much more richer and powerful, as aristocrat, general, emperor son in low, he actually amazing in everything and almost every girl in love in him, while with LY they was equal, of course LY was from more respectful and powerful family, but differences wasn't that huge, as with LBY, and lower status was compensated by SS personality . Why now every modern country improved their laws to avoid power inequality, especially when boss/teacher/any man (or woman) with bigger power can indirectly/directly force his subordinate to have relationship with him? If you still thinking that this no matter, just imagine that LBY some ordinary or even ugly man, will you think the same? Should SS forced herself love LBY because he much more powerful or saved her? If some man will save you from car accident, should you also date him, even if you don't like him?
Marriage with LBY for SS means that all her life depend from his feelings for her, if later he will loves other girl or she upset him, he can do anything for her, and nobody cant protect her. Of course we as viewers know how good person he is and how powerful his feeling for SS, but she didn't know it at first, she doesn't want depends from anybody that much, that's also why she try deal with those horrible princesses by herself, she trying to find her place in palace, become more useful, makes Emperor and Empress adore her and her talent, she also trying take care of LBY (cook food for him and doesn't bother him with her problems). Its all because she doesn't want be only LBY's wife or LBY's kids mother, she want be herself, Cheng Shao Shang and be equal with him.
And last one, SS didn't become more stupid after started study and work in palace, its her environment become much more powerful and smart. She makes different kind mistakes, she not perfect, but as is LBY. They both 3d characters.
