In novel she didn't think in that moment when he asked about who she willing be about Jin, we can see her inner struggle, because she can't accept answer.. XL didn't asked because he was coward ots really funny to hear, he never ever will give up his army and run away with her , that's why he didn't asked her that question. Why he need save Jin? If he so horrible, he no need save him and keep it as secret, he was angry at her when he find out she is princess because he thought she purposely deceived him! He already put love bug in him and their life connected forever, if he knew she is princess he never did ot at first place, but he thought she someone like him, without anything and anyone.

Yep he used CJ and Jin to helped his army , for him helping XY (which he will do anyway ), sorry he not brainless and try take best from all situations, and talking about army it's people who not obligated take care of , he can easily gave up , XY want to help him, and if he wants he can switch side and be with her .

And last one YZ herself said XY end up with Jin because he only one who want be with her, she didn't make choice, XL never seriously asked her to be with him.
Even as FFB that one time he asked her run away and she said yes, but he turned everything to joke.

XL not even once confessed to her , and if he didn't helped both Jin and XY were dead several times . He wasn't perfect, he still has flaws as complex character. But say he was selfish, when all life he take care about army who even didn't respect him simply because of his gratitude to his adoptive father, and when he did so many great things secretly without expecting anything in return, when he can simply change side confessed everything to XY and then we only can see who she will choose

People still will not believe XY loved XL even after that scene with hypnosis, love bugs (which need 2 people love each other) and her prescious mirror which has only XL memories 🤣

All XL is want is XY be happy, not alone , be able protect herself and have place to go .
And he did all this for her
- teach her archery (she able protect herself)
- because of his blood she can breath in the ocean so now she always has place she can run away
- not be alone , her whole marriage with Jin happen because XL did everything to help them be together, he pushed her to him, saved their both lives
- and to be sure she will not sad because of his death , he erased her memories about him from her mirror (this mirror has only XL memories, weird if she care about him only when she heartbroken), and also made her hate him, didn't told her its him who saved Jin and her
