Yep period dramas, esp political ones, use a lot of classical chinese called wen yan wen. (Such as XL's 虽千万人 εΎεΎ€ηŸ£ even against thousands, i shall go forth. )
It is very concise and contains complex obscure words. Subtitles help a lot by showing the characters used.
