I think you're forgetting that he has to pay off the debt, we saw him give some money to the debtor which seems to be impatient to receive the rest + the way I see it he also used those women's money as an income to replace the money he would have gained if he was an architect + it would be so weird for him to have a successful career and for it to not show with great clothes and all, which he needed the money for
