Of course, my review won't apply to viewers who read subtitles and don't mind weird/overtly modern diction lol
He looks old and has a role that's "hefty" but he's acting is kinda green in that everyone can tell he's still a newbie in Cdramas. You have to suspend your disbelief a bit when the white-haired dudes bow to him as the Grand Preceptor, and that's because he's too green as an actor to have that scholarly wellread heft (e.g. younger Jeremy Tsui, Liu Xueyi or Leo Luo), so he seems just like a very mean teacher lol.
I completely agree with you in terms of BL and ZLH's voice dubbing. I'm glad that they're using their own voices…
Yes I like the story which means I will keep watching it! I'm not hating at all, I even replay the scenes because I can't really hear what they are saying or feel the emotion of their lines (ZLH sounds stiff) if I am looking at my laptop or phone which playing it on TV. Personally the bar for excellence in acting and doing dialogue-heavy genres is: One needs to be able to understand the lines by ear without staring at the TV or using subtitles. You simply will not win or be nominated for any Big 3 TV awards if Chinese people need to read subtitles to understand what you are saying lol
Oh? Hater should be stop talking, your jealous don't stop the success of the SOKP. BL is the best actress of the…
Whatever you need to stay sane dear, she's a good actress who isn't perfect due to her speech limitations (perhaps you aren't Chinese and don't care), no one is perfect not even the Best Actress awardwinners at Magnolia or Flying Apsaras awards? It's all about whether they suit a role or not. One shouldn't cast Bailu as a schoolgirl or Rosy Zhao as a cunning queen no matter how good you think they are.
This drama is one of the few ones so far I've seen in costume dramas which keep the novel lines and respect the…
Please don't label me a hater for giving measured reviews. Scent of Time was just OK, none of MLs were that likeable and at the end I kinda wanted the FL to be free by herself lol. The drama also changed from a Palace setting to a Business empire setting which was kinda blah.
It's OK/passable for a dialogue-heavy rebirth trope drama (i ♥️ this genre and watch much of it lol) that couldve been better if they casted more experienced leads with better enunciation (e.g. Zhang Wanyi or Tan Jianci level for their age group) and more gravitas to play a reborn Empress and the Grand Preceptor. Their delivery is cringily funny at times e.g. the scene where Bai Lu yells "Yan Lin are you crazy?" https://m.weibo.cn/detail/4965936413017558 when he accosts her in her 1st life trended on Weibo because it was laughable how Bailu said it casually like a modern tween? I can't believe the sound director let that pass?
Bailu is a very likeable actress for me but she doesn't look too queenly in her past life (refer to FBB, Ning Jing, Sun Li, Jing Tian) and her original voice isn't too good, when trailers came out everyone was telling Yuzheng to dub it. The perfect actress to play JXN is a Jing Tian or Zanilia Zhao 5 years ago or even now lol.
Zhang Linghe's mean vibes are a bit OTT for Xie Wei?His voice also sounds kinda fake deep like he is deliberately trying to sound older. Wang Xingyue prob could've pulled off Xie Wei's genteel but cunning role, he has done similar roles in Scent of Time and One and Only.
I'm glad BL & ZLH used original voices (everyone has to start somewhere) and will watch for the storyline but this isn't going to be a smash hit in China due to the flaws mentioned reducing the rewatchability. It had a lot of potential being a dialogue heavy political thriller but the leads suits Xianxia more than Palace dramas IMO, they just lack the diction and clarity. I really hope Rebirth of a Malicious Empress of Military Lineage is cast and adapted properly, that novel is more of a smash hit than Kunning Palace and the ML is widely loved. Rebirth dramas are a trend now for sure but none have completely hit it out of the park, one of them will set a high bar hopefully
Unfair that this drama was delayed so long. Broadcasting it right after Sent of Time which has the same premise...…
It's not unfair, the 3rd ML Jacky Zhou who plays Yan Lin prostested on Weibo in support of the White Paper Protests last year (he posted a photo of himself holding white paper lol, gutsy guy) and the drama's post processing got delayed as a result. There were rumours his scenes would be cut or reshot but eventually he came out fine like Jessie Li another actress who supported the protests.
He's very lucky, because everyone was speculating if Yan Lin's scenes may be cut but he is such a key character to the plot and the FL's choices that you cannot remove his scenes.
He really is such a dreamboat, and his fate is quite sad. He was quietly devoted to a heartless woman who married…
I think she never got over her guilt to Yan Lin? In her past life she also lets him s*xually assault her and says it was her punishment. I don't get how she treats him like a friend after getting r*ped by him before.
I really dislike the ML due to how Zhang Linghe interprets it, tbh Wang Xingyue probably does such dark characters better than Zhang Linghe despite being way younger lol
Wang Xingyue was 19 when he filmed this drama so there are speculations that he wasn't asked to do kiss scenes because of his age. IDK if he's done it in other dramas.
i feel like there might be s2 with the surprise cameos by sunyi and pengxiao ran. i had a feeling there would…
There won't be a season 2. The novel ends after epsiode 29, the show's ep 30 will give it a new ending and Chinese dramas based on novels don't have season 2 unless it's based on original scripts. Meaning to say, Youku bought the publishing rights to this book, they make a drama out of it, they are not allowed to make a season 2 unless the original author wrote a part 2 because the story's IP rights still belong to the novel author and not Youku. Youku and other drama producers can't just add a new season to the original story, they will violate the novelist's rights.
A lot of international fans keep asking for season 2 of many cdramas without understanding that it simply isn't possible unless it's an original script (e.g. Under The Skin) or the novel writer agrees to write a Part 2 like Joy of Life S2 which needed time for the novelist to complete. 90% of Cdramas are based on completed novels with 0 chance of a part 2.
I was with her until she took the blame for her father, the best thing you can do for someone is let them take…
In the book she takes the blame for her father's actions because she doesn't want to be a concubine of ZXW who was the Emperor. She wanted to be banished and lived freely outside the cities.
I'm not kidding that the #1 Rebirth novel is Rebirth of a Malicious Empress https://www.novelupdates.com/series/the-rebirth-of-the-malicious-empress-of-military-lineage/, it's fully translated to English and has a lot of international and Chinese fans but the novel rights got purchased by a small company with no intention to film yet 😭. The author has another popular novel https://www.novelupdates.com/series/rebirth-of-a-star-general/ that already casted Cheng Lei and Zhou Ye as the title general. Kunning is a lesser known novel and i don't think it's S+ i.e. the level of TTEOTM or LYF.
