Well, if you haven't already gotten there soon. There is a good amount of romance. I guess we have to look at her from the eyes of teenagers. Being 15 and being treated badly, it is hard for her to let go of her grievances and trust. But Zeshen, is also acting like a teenager, and his plotting and retribution all the while trying to love too.

I thought the "Red Sleeve" was unrealistic. As much as I wanted to like it, I was ultimately disappointed. It was interesting learning about the life of a palace maid, but I did not like the ending. She loved him, but didn't want him was not enough for me. Sorry, forget that I chose myself in ancient times.

Sorry for the interruption after you have posted so long ago, but I am on one of my many re-watches of this drama. I was searching through the comments for something to share. IMO the FL is a wild child of only 15 years old, after what they did, it is a wonder she can speak properly. She acts with the inexperienced heart of a child, so many of her thoughts and actions are immature.
You mentioned "The Red Sleeve", which I was so disappointed in. However sad the circumstances, I felt this drama was unrealistic for the times. Sometimes, drama land carries female empowerment too far. I hated the ending,
Ling Buyi character is truly the Grey character. He stayed ruthless and committed to his revenge till the end…
I watched this again after "The Prisoner of Beauty"; I needed that pick-me-up feeling again. This was truly a well-made drama, which we see so little of lately.

They are together off and on toward the end, and the episodes move quickly. I don't know about the novel, but in the last episode, they decide to get married in another county after a big battle. None of this is shown, though. It is fairly well done, so it is worth watching. You will want the story to go on to see where they go from there. I think the novel tells more.
After watching this many times, I am still struck by the cast and their outstanding acting job. Additionally, when you watch the ML and FL, they possess a childlike quality about them. The things they do and the way they act are just like teenagers.
Just a horribly crafted script. Chopping editing that made the story hard to follow in way too many places.Actors…
I finally watched this drama after putting it off for such a long time, and now I know to trust my instincts. I wasn't sure what to comment because I could not make sense of the redundancy of such a poor script. Then I read your comment, and it said it all. Thanks for saying exactly what I was thinking.
I did not like the final 3 episodes. They don’t fit the tone of the drama at all. The final scenes could not…
Thanks for your post, I have been a fan since they released the first teaser way back when. However, I am a little perturbed about the way "Tencent Video" is trickling out the episodes. I am waiting for the last one so I can binge, but it is taking forever. I know that you can buy one episode ahead of time, but that is only for the app. On MDL, it says they release episodes every day of the week, but they did not release any episodes Fri-thru-Sat. I am not Asian or Asian American. I just like Asian dramas. This is so not fair.
Why is this above love like the Galaxy on ratings ..? Disrespectful to that masterpiece.
I think so many people overthink ratings. Most of them are controlled and manipulated by fan clubs and netizens. A good drama is a good drama, and they were both great dramas to me in their own way. I wish the Asian entertainment industry had a better way to be fair, but money talks.
