twot is as beautiful as its name is!!!

i hope this doesnt have a character limit because i have a LOT to say about this drama. im writing this review around a year after i watched this drama (i kinda took a long pause in the middle bc of school so i started it in feb 2025 but finished it in oct 2025 so hence its reasonably fresh) and yes this WILL contain spoilers.

if youre looking for a drama that is as beautiful as the name sounds, TWOT is the literal perfect one😭😭 many cnetizens too find it a beautiful yet heartbreaking watch, while others straight up “不敢看” because it is “太虐”. but despite the tears, this drama left a huge imprint in my heart and is IRREPLACEABLE..its truly the watch of all time and my favourite cdrama watch so far, and probably forever

i think part of why i resonate with this so deeply boils down to current world affairs as war and conflict are still very real and very destructive in parts of the world. as an audience, i hold a omniscient view of the entire unfolding of the story, and it reminded me of how privileged i am. this drama teaches the importance of empathy, kindness, love; in a world full of cruelty and brutality, it is these values and virtues that become the light for those in need. the drama’s emphasis on love, and how love is portrayed as a healing force, is extremely significant in teaching us that what makes us human is our ability to feel and help others. by centralising the story about war and its detriments on the people experiencing it, victims or frontline, twot reminds us to stay present for our loved ones.

now about the cast!!! i watched this drama for liangjie, love her lots (i think shes so underrated for such a skilled actress), she did NOT disappoint😭😭😭😭 her portrayal of songran is so well executed😭😭😭just thinking about ranran makes me so sad because i genuinely love her so much as a character. shes kind, and while appearing soft on the surface, youll realise that she aint no pushover, her strength lies in her kindness and her sense of justice and well as love for the world. i always say stuff like “梁洁的眼神戏真绝” and i still stand by it.. the execution was done so meticulously and her eyes literally spoke when words werent said. i also think that liangjies ranran is one of the most, if not the most, accurate depictions of depression i have ever seen. people always focus on how someone looks outwardly; ranran gives us an insight into the internal turmoil that she faces, which is hidden from the world☹️

brings me to chen zheyuan’s azan too!! this was the first czy drama that i watched, and it made me recognise him as a goated actor (as ive only seen him in variety shows haha). i love azan’s character: his gentleness and courage, his softness yet tough strength, they are all portrayed so well which makes azan such a nuanced character. the depiction of inner struggle and pain is so well done i can feel the pain emanating through the screen

about the music, i dont think i had any problems with the music, just wanted to specially mention 白色岛屿 by Rong Zuer and Te Amo by Alin, those are my favourites and most emotionally evoking haha. the former, especially, has such beautiful lyrics (about a lonely white island and a blue boat sailing towards her), and there were multiple references made within the show!! the colour symbolism is amazing btw ill talk about it later

about the plot and production, im not too much of an expert on this and i understand that some people have some problems with the pacing and the character development but me personally i found it ok to follow. there were a few gaps that i dont think was too major hopefully because (i admit im sucked into the story) i get so focused on the storyline that the gaps are easy to miss sometimes. and about character development i think it may take some time to understand the characters because ultimately no characters are perfect. i really appreciate the nuance of each character; besides ranran and azan, theres also shenbei, who was portrayed to be arrogant at first, you eventually see the kindness and selflessness she embodies after she puts down her facade of insecurity; and benjieming, who was cocky (and admittedly a little scummy) initially, but you eventually see his vulnerabilities as well as his softer side.. the characters are not portrayed as inherently good or bad but as long as they are willing to be kind and good and help those in need they have the good in their hearts and are important as characters that contribute meaningfully to the story ^^

the character relationships are very well done in this drama. the main cp is basically 2 broken individuals trying to heal each other and its both sad and wholesome to watch at the same time. the relationship explored between ranran and her mother and how they resolved their years long tension is very very bittersweet. the close knit brotherhood of the soliders despite them coming from different places, because they all fight for the same cause, to help the war victims, to advocate for world peace. even ranrans relationship with azans father is so meaningful (the conversation they had got me really bad).

okieie finally to symbolism!! i thought the symbolism was especially well done and done really meaningfully too. for example notice the colour symbolism in azan and ranrans clothing. when i said earlier about the white island and the blue boat, there are certain scenes where azan and ranran were wearing white shirts with blue outerwear (eg vests) which in a way symbolises the companionship of the blue boat to the white island..if you get what i mean😭🙏🙏 what i mean to say is that only with each other they had true companionship. azan and ranran both have quite a few people around them but still they felt lonely and its so nice to see them fianlly find solace in each others embrace because 两个小苦瓜啊啊 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

finally i wanna talk about the symbolism of the white olive tree in itself, of course this is my own interpretation but its somehting i found really beautiful about the drama too. the white olive tree isnt something that exists, that scene where ranran and azan both saw it together shows their common hope of a better world amidst the cruel world.. the olive tree symbolises peace and purity, and the mirage ranran and azan first saw is far away, out of reach, but represents their hope that there will be peace in the world (as shown by their wishes). the seed that the old lady sold to ranran, which they planted, represents the goal they set towards world peace, actual action they take to fight for world peace. they water the seed, feed it nutrients, hoping to nurture it into a strong and sturdy white okive tree. i saw somewhere that the white olive tree mirage is a patch of olive trees coated in ash and dust from the war which makes it even sadder 😭😭😭😭😭 azan and ranran persevered only for the hope and desire of a better world because they saw hope in something so desolate and hopeless and because of their hope, acted so selflessly to aid others. this especially stuck REALLY HARD to me because it makes me feel not only for the characters but also for war victims

tldr amazing and super meaningful watch for me, but it does contain really really heavy topics so do avoid it if you are uncomfortable ^^
