Love For You
Song Weilong - Chen Yi
Zhang Jingyi - Miao Jing
Before Watching: I love the visuals of this drama, I’m super excited for it to be released. I am also a sucker for childhood friends/basically siblings turned lovers trope. I loved Dazzling and Speed and Love, so I’m hoping that this drama lives up to its hype. Song Weilong has slowly became one of my favorite actors as well and Zhang Jingyi I haven’t really watched, but she was amazing in Lighter and Princess. Overall, just super super excited that this drama is out.
(Extra Note: I love when dramas use the actors original voice. I love Song Weilong and Zhang Jingyi’s voice so it’s a great thing.)
After Watching: I knew like 5 episodes in that this was going to be a 10/10 for me. It was so beautifully done. I loved all the tropes. The angst. The protection. The simply love. The small town setting. The visual. The side characters. The OST. The actors/actresses. Everything was perfect. This is the love story that I think everyone longs for, but doesn’t get to get. “Love For You” tells the story of found family, childhood enemies turned into lovers. It also deals with mature themes that I loved, like the crime scene, death of a loved one, PTSD, and sacrifice. The OSTs were all so amazing. Like, genuinely. I loved every song. Especially the ones that Song Weilong and Zhang Jingyi sang themselves. I love Song Weilong’s raspy voice. Speaking of the actors, this was the perfect pairing. Their chemistry is so high and you can really tell through their acting. I also think that Song Weilong had a breakthrough with this role. He played Chen Yi so well, all the complex emotions. And Zhang Jingyi is such such a good actor. She is able to play any type of character. Their in-person chemistry is also top tier. I watched their variety show/special episodes and it was so sweet. I can tell that Weilong and Jingyi are really comfortable with eachother as people. We got a wedding scene too, in that special snippet. Song Weilong kept on checking on Jingyi the entire time, they sang together, and they reacted together. Jingyi crying shows just how much she got absorbed into the character and their storyline. Her crying at the end, I can definitely tell why. After all they went through, the happy ending is just 10x more emotional. Song Weilong comforting her, giving her tissues…idk in that variety show, I can tell it’s more Weilong and Jingyi rather than Chen Yi and Miao Jing. This drama was just top tier. Ugh, I loved it.
Episode 1: I love smalltown dramas with the trope where the FL returns after so many years. After seeing Chen Yi for the first time, I already love him. The protective nature. Chen Yi’s rustic look and not being scared of anything is just so attractive. When he held that knife blade and put it right up at the man's head, I was like “holy, can this man be any more masculine?” (in a good way, ofc).
Episode 2: I can see the change in Chen Yi and Miao Jing’s relationship after she made him egg custard to eat once she realized that he was being abused by his dad. Miao Jing feeding him and then Chen Yi realizing her kindness was such a sweet moment that I think the both of them will remember forever.
Episode 3: I love Chen Yi’s advice to Miao Jing. “If you feel wronged, then cry. But don’t forget why you cried and act like nothing’s wrong in a couple days.” I love how Chen Yi is giving Miao Jing the comfort to be vulnerable if she wants, but then stand up for what’s right. I really feel for Chen Yi when he said “Not all parents know how to love their children. In this world, a lot of parents don’t know how to parent.” Chen Yi understands that more than anyone. “Miao Jing, don’t place your future in the hands of other people. If you want to make something of yourself, you have to rely on yourself.”
Episode 5: Chen Yi feeling bad for kicking her out seeing how hard Miao Jing has to work now. He gave her back the key to the house and started following her around, making sure she was safe. I loved that Chen Yi apologized to her for kicking her out and said “I was just angry. I don’t have any other intentions or bad thoughts. You are my family. That home is your home.” The way that Miao Jing finally broke down and was vulnerable about all of these troubles she’s dealt with. I loved the pull in hug that he did while also rubbing her head, so comforting. Her holding on to his forearm as well. Chen Yi taking on the role of the provider so seriously. “Since I’ve taken her in, I can afford it. I will manage it.”
Episode 6: Chen Yi getting beat up so bad just to save the money. He protected that money with his life and I bet you it is to pay for Miao Jing’s tuition. Him reading her notes to her so she could study, she could close her eyes, and him noticing she had nowhere to lay so he gave her his back to lean on. These small details. I love the policeman and his wife’s side characters too. Chen Yi is Miao Jing’s safe space. Aw…Chen Yi…he went and visited Wei Mingzhen and all he said was “keep the money, live a good life with Miao Jing, just don’t lie to her”
Episode 7: Aw…Chen Yi came for Miao Jing to watch her leave, but Miao Jing never meant to leave. She always wanted to stay. The hug that they shared was so comforting: “I found my family a long time ago.” When he hugged her back, UGH…They were both so peaceful and happy now that Miao Jing chose to stay. Chen Yi’s wish being for “Miao Jing to have a safe and peaceful future and for them to walk it together.” His whole life centers around Miao Jing. Everything he does is for her.
Episode 10: Miao Jing and Chen Yi are officially fallen for eachother. THE KISS!! Hello. I did not expect that so quick. But, I loved it. Miao Jing taking initiative with words and Chen Yi taking initiative with actions. Also, that hug was so deep and vulnerable too.
Episode 11: HELLO! The bed scene was kinda crazy. Chen Yi did stop her from kissing him, but then they were literally sharing a bed and cuddling like… Also, he didn’t say “no”, he said “not yet”. Plus, he was the one to kiss her first that one rainy night, so his self control is kinda insane. The tension when they were face to face on that bed, idk if anyone could’ve resisted that. Miao Jing is actually gorgeous with her new hairstyle and the stylists dressing Jingyi up to be 6 years older. She’s so pretty and I love her confidence and character. Chen Yi has let himself go a little bit, but I’m sure Miao Jing can turn that around. I can already see his signs of wanting to change. He picked up the trash in his room and Miao Jing is going to help him get rid of his bad habits. I always think back to that one tiktok edit song “he was sunshine, I was midnight rain..” In this era of their adult life, they’re both midnight rain and I honestly love that for them.
Episode 14: I didn’t even notice this detail until I saw it on Tiktok. When he was pouring her water, he at first did it in a plastic cup but then looked at her and changed it to a mug. Chen Yi truly thinks that Miao Jing deserves the absolute best, so he tries his best to give that to her. Omg the scene in the rain at the old factory. This is the turning point. I can tell. The music, the rain, Chen Yi’s angst, Miao Jing’s meaning. Beautiful scene.
Episode 15: Wow, starting off strong. “Miao Jing, u can hate me, punish me, make my life a living hell, just don’t hurt yourself to get to me.”
Episode 17: Holy, this episode was amazing. He looked so attractive during the fighting scenes and I LOVE LOVE LOVE SONG WEILONG’S MAD VOICE. HIS VOICE GETS RASPY AND IT’S JUST SUCH A NICE TOUCH TO THE SCENE. Wow. His scene when he was struggling with the PTSD was amazing. Song Weilong played that out so well. The obsessive nature of going back to that memory, the rubbing of the hands, and Miao Jing’s desperation to snap him out of it. I watched a BTS clip of that scene when they shot it and Song Weilong was so immersed in his character. Also, that hug after was improv. Zhang Jingyi said they were only supposed to touch foreheads, but the hug seemed necessary with all that emotion. And even when struggling with his PTSD, Chen Yi’s first thought was to apologize for scaring Miao Jing. And the argument leading up to the kiss was the angst we needed. Everything has been building up to this conversation. Chen Yi just wanting Miao Jing to be safe. Miao Jing wanting Chen Yi to be safe with her. “You’re my home. You destroyed my home.” Those words cut deep. And then the kiss. Possibly the best one I’ve ever seen. So tension filled.
Episode 19: The tension in this episode was actually insane. I feel like I’m saying that for every episode, but that scene in the hallway where Miao Jing tugged on Chen Yi’s tie to get him face-to-face with her. Plus, the scene where Miao Jing was drying Chen Yi’s hair. Miao Jing is making moves I see. Her in the car saying he does look good in a suit and she can’t keep her hands and eyes off of him. Miao Jing, I 100% agree with you just fyi.
Episode 20: Miao Jing knows what she’s doing 100%. Her teasing Chen Yi in the car before work with a kiss and him actually leaning in, but then her leaving. Miao Jing is really taking control. When trying to hide from that boss in the truck park, she literally climbed over Chen Yi’s lap and that kiss….um, way way too intimate for it to be normal.
Episode 22: I love how Chen Yi’s first reaction whenever Miao Jing is in danger is to save her himself. He didn’t wait for anyone, he didn’t care about the high tide, he just needed to make sure Miao Jing was okay. And then their deep convo/kiss on the beach was so heartfelt and genuine. Miao Jing saying she brings so much more danger to his life and Chen Yi saying “I chose this.” Then, obviously the kiss that was so deep and full of emotion. Miao Jing’s thoughts being “When will he learn to love himself?”and Chen Yi’s thoughts being “I just want her safe”. This perfectly summarizes their characters and purpose throughout the whole drama. I just love it.
Episode 23: This episode is literal perfection. The start of it. The infamous rain scene. Both of them cuddled up on the couch together. Dancing in the rain. Chen Yi saying “I’ll be your bodyguard for life.” Miao Jing and Chen Yi sharing their vulnerable and comfortable moments.
Episode 28: That kissing scene…hello. Possibly the best one I’ve seen in a modern cdrama!!! It was just so intense and captured their longwaited emotions so well.
Episode 31: This episode was actually so beautifully crafted. The way that both Miao Jing and Chen Yi are willing to risk everything for the other person. The red triangle luck charm that Chen Yi used to lure Miao Jing to where they were. The stabbing that Chen Yi went through. Miao Jing saving Chen Yi from Zhang Bin’s stabbing and getting into a fight herself with Zhang Bin. And then ofc, Chen Yi’s final act of saving Miao Jing through using all of his strength to pull Miao Jing up even after getting stabbed and beaten. He knew that he couldn’t let Miao Jing go. Also, Zhai Feng Miao coming back and getting his revenge on Zhang Bin was so satisfying too. Miao Jing is so smart, luring him here. Then, them saying “I love you” to eachother while on the stretchers. Ugh, just a pure cinematic masterpiece of an episode.
Episode 32: “Thank you for finding me. Thank you for lighting up my life.” On that same rooftop they shared when they were children. The montage of all of their moments together. The OST playing in the back with lyrics talking about the future. This was the best ending to this story. I loved every minute of this ending.
