I personally hate Call Me by Your Name for this very reason. That is not an argument. We all know pop culture often normalizes unbalanced and unhealthy relationships, and that is precisely what subconsciously influences the way we think as a society. That is why, for a long time, people did not find it disturbing : it was seen everywhere. Now, as an adult, I will never find a relationship with a teenager acceptable. Let’s say you’re 25, would you really be interested in a 17 year old? Akira is a high schooler, and the tutor is in his mid twenties. Why would you make a move on a teenager, especially the younger brother of your best friend, whom you secretly love? He clearly took advantage of Akira’s vulnerability when he was at his lowest, as well as his young age. The tutor is, in fact, a groomer. The relationship is problematic and not healthy, Akira knows it, and Kanda knows it too. As an adult, you are aware of the influence you can have on a minor, and you have a responsibility to restrain yourself. It’s just common sense. If Kanda really wanted to help Akira, getting involved with him in that way was not the right way to help a child in distress. Akira is intelligent, but too young to fully understand that he is being taken advantage of, and that this is distorting his understanding of what a normal relationship should be, which could have long-term consequences for his future relationships. Therefore, I find it difficult to consider this relationship consensual, as one party, the tutor, has convinced the other, Akira, that this kind of no-strings-attached relationship is what is best for both of them, even though it primarily benefits Kanda. Akira should be experiencing romantic and sexual relationships with people his own age.
I like the story too, but I don’t think the relationship between Kanda and Akira should be normalized. I suppose the author included it in the story because it reflects something that exists in real life, and it shapes the way Akira’s character is portrayed.
