I've watched 6 episodes of this show so far and it looks really promising. Neither the height difference nor the weak shou and dominant gong are my fave aspects in BLs but this show makes it make sense why the MC is such a doormat. It's understandable why he has such low self esteem due to his upbringing and why he is both timid and grateful to the ML. Also the cinematography and OST is beautiful and fitting. Production is great too, they at least try to spend the budget on enough details to depict early 90s era. Casting seems fitting too. I don't understand the low score this show got. In comparison to currently running CBLs this one is fairly well casted, directed and produced.

I'm very aware that there are many different ways to cast, and I absolutely did not assume that this was an open casting because the dialogue clearly states that MC was invited for a screen test. I finished watching ep 1, it's clear now that it's a rigged game plus it's casting for a movie, not a series and for plot reasons they decided to throw an NC scene in for screen test. the logic is still a bit flawed since from dialogue I got that the other guy is a successful and award winning actor, but the director made him doing at least kisses with a few undecided casting candidates. What I really got wrong was the smoking though, it's not explicitly said or implied that MC did not know about whether the character smokes or not.

I only managed to watch about 15 minutes of ep 1 but have to stop because I'm baffled, not in a positive way. So I need help from Mandarin fluent fellow audience to help me understand. As far as I understand the main guy walked into this audition for the first time, the other main guy is already casted as for a main role, so the premise is to find his counterpart. What baffles me is: which serious production company would throw the undecided cast candidates directly into a bed scene? This is supposed to be a tv series with serious plot, shouldn't they act like any normal crew and have them read some dialogue, maybe some emotional heavy scens with the decided cast member? Is there something missing in the translation on Viki? And also if the main guy comes for a role, should he not know the outlines of the character he wants to play? how come he is so surprised that he has to smoke to portray this one?

well I am not the kind of novel reader who insist on an adaptation being the same as source material. storytelling in written or visual form is vastly different, there is time and budget constraints. I am not so happy with this work because they make dumb choice. If they want the drama than a) they could have leave the cup smash (would still be not character compliant to Chusans version in the show) but have the subordinates being outraged and wants to smash him and LiuYi calling them back or b) making Chusan just leave with a firm refuse to join, have LiuYi visibly angered but not reacting violently as in previous encounters which will show relationship and character development. there are many ways to film a scene like this but so make it so illogical just shows the not so talented creators. I still don't hate it, mainly because the two main leads are doing a good job, but its now not a great show imo

I agree and although the series is still entertaining enough I think they made the worst choices in this adaptation. the gritty gangster plot seems like an afterthought, the characters relationship and core personality traits (Detective Xie and Investigator Lu) were changed and it's not a good change imo. Chusan could have never walked away unharmed if he shows such disrespect to a gangster boss (by shattering the cup of blood). All this makes no sense for the setting as a dark crime thriller genre

as a novel reader I have mixed feelings about this show. the 2 leads are perfectly casted and also Ciu Dong Dong as well. but the detective inspector and Xiao Ma is not how they were described in the book, they are both very important characters too. what a pity they make Xiao Ma who is a very smart gangster look so dumb in the show.

I don't know how you came to this conclusion but both the show and the book showed that Qing Long adopted them as kids but there are no romantic feelings developed until Liu Yi is an adult or at least when he is about 17 or 18. The age gap is nonsense in the book it is stated that it 8 or 10 years at max between Liu Yi and Qing Long. The casting choice for the flashback scenes are not good, they shoud have a young guy act as young Qing Long and an older kid act as Liu Yi, that kid does not look like he is 10. Nevertheless the flashback scenes only showed doting and parental behaviour from Qing Long, none of romantic interest

9 episodes are definitely not enough to cover the story if they stick to the novel but they already changed some plot points and timeline, probably due to budget reasons. But I'm hopeful they can film a coherent even though shorter story

Ep1 looks promising, although the directing and some of the cast did not win me over, but the leads are so well casted and their acting are strong. fingers crossed for this becoming a strong and memorable show

oh wow I agree soo much with you. ChuSan's room is waaaaay to spacious and took me out of the scene, for me the most unbelievable thing so far in ep1, even more than the tree falling down and rescue scene

If the actors of this show get the opportunity to pick up a costume drama I hope they could do an adaptation of the novel Thrice married to a salted fish. Hao Yiran would be great as the moraly grey doctor character. Yun Qi can also have fun with those different roles of the husband

this person also gave RL BTS compilation a 10. seems like a rabid RL fan to me because of that. also most votes of them are either 10 or 1 for shows, with some other few numbers sprinkled in between. what a nuanced view they have

I also like RL very much but there are some really rabid fans of this show who goes around comment sections of other CBL and trolling, happened to Desire and Kill to Love already and TMS mid airing also had RL stans who are unreasonable. Frankly any show or artist has a big majority of normal fans and then a very very small number of people who are unreasonable fans

Another RL troll in this comment section but not the greatest hater at least. Taste is subjective but if a person really watched the whole series and comes to a conclusion that the acting is weak at least they should point out the less experienced actors or actress

To My Shore has the most artistic and gorgeous posters imo in recent BLs I haven't see any posters which surpassed it. The creators for this show are really serious about the project and have solid craftsmanship.

I got curious why you answered to my comment, cause I was ranting about some reviews with score 3 and lower, so I scrolled back in this comment section. Taste is individual, you obviously also wanted to voice your view by sharing your dislike, so I can also point out my confusion and rant. Although 7 is not a low score but comparing to some very mediocre shows imo where you gave 10 or 8.5, to me it feels like you did just that, lower the score. But please you do you.

People who started watching this show which is correctly stated genre-wise as romance + drama and all the relevant tags about sensitive or triggering aspects and then rate it low because it shows exactly what it promised and with thoughtful portrayal of the consequences of the manipulation are a mystery to me. If you can only stomach drama in the sense of the leads suffering because of evil doings of external characters outside of the ship than go look for other shows, there are plenty of them. This one depicts a toxic relationship and does it well. It is dark romance with no sugar coating or excuse for bad behaviour. the victim is suffering and fighting back as he should, the manipulator is suffering consequences of his actions and there is growth and remorse shown. to rate a show lower because one has certain expectations for a BL is kind of undermining the logic, because BL is not a genre mediawise, the genre is romance and drama, not only romance, nor romance and comedy.
