The Story (Spoiler-Free)

The story begins when a Bai Zhi is discovered by a scholar named Xu Chenghuai (许承怀) inside a library. Xu Chenghuai teaches it to read, and the yokai eventually takes on the form of a young woman named Chongchong (虫虫) .

Chongchong falls deeply in love with Xu Chenghuai. However, she learns about love, jealousy, and human emotions only from books — she has never truly experienced them herself. When Xu Chenghuai's heart belongs to someone else, Chongchong's limited understanding of human feelings leads her to make a terrible mistake.

The consequences of this mistake haunt her for years. Later, she appears in a town called Lian Shui Xiang (连水乡) under the guise of "Doctor Shen" (沈大夫) and a servant named Chongchong. There, she uses another yokai called "An Dao" (暗刀 — Dark Blade) to manipulate the townspeople, trying to understand love and jealousy by observing human behavior in staged romantic situations.

Tao Yao and her companions eventually arrive and begin to unravel the mystery.
