From its captivating first episode to its apotheosis of a finale, this show will keep you glued to your seat. It’s one of those series you have to rewatch because you discover details you missed the first time, or realize how a specific action explains a later outcome. It’s so well-constructed that I didn't even see the ending coming; it was a complete surprise!It's true that for a great script to succeed, you need talented actors who truly understand their characters—and this is another of the series' major strengths. Xiao Wuji wouldn't be the same if Hou Minghao hadn't brought him to life. This incredibly talented Chinese actor has wonderful expressiveness and a gaze that doesn't need words to convey his thoughts. I've seen his other works, and with this role, he has taken another massive leap forward in his career.Aimee is also perfect as Xie Jiayu. I read that the age difference between the actors (Aimee was a minor during filming) caused some controversy, but for me, it’s quite the opposite: it makes their characters even more believable. Furthermore, the romance between Wuji and Jiayu is built on pure admiration and respect. With just a look or a simple touch, the actors perfectly convey their characters' deep love. I find this type of romantic plot highly original nowadays, where it seems like every series follows the exact same formula.
The veteran director does a magnificent job. I love the overall aesthetic of the series; it’s a beautiful celebration of Eastern aesthetics.
And of course, I can’t forget the soundtrack—it’s absolutely gorgeous!
