I'm not saying that what these characters did in the series is good. I don't like how long they drag out the explanation and that we haven't gotten it yet. But maybe (I'm grasping at everything to try to explain this to myself) religion in Thailand views these matters quite differently than the West. Quote from Google about Buddhism: "Buddhists develop compassion and understanding for others, seeing their negative actions as the result of ignorance and suffering, not as an evil, devastating punishment. The key is not to continue suffering through anger and the desire for revenge, but to cultivate patience, love, and active action to correct the situation, which reflects the law of cause and effect (karma)."
