Blossom of power romance didn’t really convinced me for some reason… blossoms (with the same actress) got…
i just finished blossoms of power and thought it was terrible. He Yu was not terrible, but almost everything else was. They should have made the entire drama about 2ml/2fl.

The voice actors, good god. I had to slog thru the entire freakin show on MUTE because of that.

Came here to see if this drama is any good. I LOVE Ling He as Xie Wei. But I'm really skeptical of the idea of a full-length republican era drama... sounds boring.

Well said. Shallow and bland.Even very mediocre "It's OK That's Love" looks good compared. There are some…
it was mediocre. Both of those actors have done way better works so it was weird that when you put them together, they couldn't make it happen for this script, but that's just how it played out.

Now check out my watchlist too and tell me if I like fluffier romcoms lol

the way she reacts to seeing her father and brother after a long absence shows that somehow she is also the original soul as well.

She married him because the marriage wouldn't last long but you're expecting her to change the deal and fully…
Well I remember my poet bf used to read people's writings when they'd ask for his opinion, and get very impatient and snotty and say "who are you writing this for?" Invariably the author says "well myself. And whoever might like it also." And he'd say "WELL THAT'S THE PROBLEM." His point being, that you have to conceptualize your audience.... if your medium is one done in front of an audience. The actor has a crowd in a theater. The author has the readers. Shakespeare had the level of success that he did because he KNEW this.

Art as pure self expression is great, but it tends to be niche. And there is no money in niche, just recognition. I"m just sayin. The author has every right to write what they want to write, and the crowd has every right to get rowdy and boo and throw cabbages.

🥬🥬🥬🥬🍅🥔

I have my cabbages at the ready, but I refrain from throwing them till I see what this director is really up to here... haven't rated, haven't reviewed. Just waiting.

Forsooth, ye dost speak verily. Yet also just as verily... if the writer doth write that which the beholders desire to behold, said writer doth make more cashmoneys.

Physically, the female lead isn't the King's child; she is frail, though her spirit (Gu...) is perhaps intelligent,…
1000% on everything. I was doing my laundry thinking about what's wrong here, and I think the problem might come from the fact that the director/writers force you to fill in her emotional blanks yourself. You get no - for instance - flashbacks of being the other spirit... or what it was like to have your family die... or a cold marriage to the other prince.... or her childhood and memories of her father and brother.

You don't get admissions of weakness or inward thoughts or emotions from her interactions with her attendants. You don't get any inner monologue that gives clues to her spiritual address.

So it's not just that her reserve never falters. It's that the director's eye, the narrative eye, also masks her emotions, and never lets that mask slip to the viewers. Watching it is like playing poker trying to figure out the opponent's cards.

And she's set up to be the opponent and not the heroine, because we see everything the prince feels, thinks, everything he does, we are viewing the drama from HIS point of view, not hers. Yet the drama is about her.

We are left to remind ourselves constantly "she has a spirit in her of a woman whos entire clan was exterminated in front of her by her own husband." But even then, we don't know how the two spirits interact in her psyche, because the director won't tell us.

I just still don't know what I think of this show yet until the director shows us where tf he's going with all this. IT BETTER BE GOOD.

well , she was crying and felt really bad. Thats why she married him. And in the upcoming eps she will warm up
i was 3/4 in on SOKP when I came back to ask "why am i watching this again" and people watched ahead were like "yoooo! TRUST me!" And they were RIGHT! WAHHHH damn best drama ever.

but i didn't know it was the best drama ever til it was nearly over. Since then, i am like "ok drama, I will humor you. But this payoff better be GOOD."

So I'm hangin in. But this payoff better be GOOD. And I know it probably won't be because I've never seen this FL give a proper hot lava kiss to anyone ever, and I don't think she can (either that or her agency won't let her do steamy kisses, idk?).

The only way this could work is if He Yu TAKES CONTROL of the kiss scenes. He's done it before. In My Fated Boy, the last ep has what i'm 90% sure is a french kiss. All those black hot looks, he can back that up. FL I honestly have no faith in to pull off a hot lava scene at all. I'm honestly not even sensing much chemistry coming from her for He Yu. idk if she's hiding it really well or if it's just not there.

I think the problem is not her ice queen status, that was a refreshing bit, a heroine who wants to safeguard her…
well stated. But I wonder here if the problem is with Meng Zi Yi. Either that or the director encouraging her to act that way for the role?

Because a lot of what makes her come off as a biatch is those wide open "psycho eyes" where you can see WAY too much eye-white. I watched her and there ARE times where her eyes are relaxed and you can see less eye-whites. So that means her eyes aren't "just like that". She's putting it on as an affectation.

Then add to that her expressionlessness and stiffness

And what I get is this sense that she's putting on this "who, me?" act. Which is how she came off to me in Blossom also, and Blossom was great, except that the chemistry wasn't there, and her performance wasn't very emotionally accessible. It was just a good STORY with lots of eye candy and gorgeous production.

Something about those extra wide eyes with the "who, me?" expression is just so off-putting. it makes my eyes tired just watching her do it.

If this same role had been given to Bai Lu or Lusi or (insert your favorite actress here), would the character have come off as such a bitch, as written?

This actress doesn't really have a lot of microexpression game. Sometimes I see her face flicker, but not often, and not in a way that draws me in. She's beautiful yes, but she doesn't win me over with that weird wide-eyed look she does all the time.

ikr , i expected atleast for the second leads to get together but for the next eps it doesn't seem so(hopefully…
it's gonna get to the part where they deliver on the goods, i'm thinking. She sheds tears, and at the same time, the flower she's watching over will open up. All this is symbolic of her heart opening up to him.

Exactly at this point even I am feeling her coldness towards crown prince is getting a little too much even after…
i think she's legit TERRIFIED of what happened to the Gu's. So it's like she's just not emotionally available to ANYONE.

Everyone suspects the Emperor poisoned Huayong while there's me who suspects the Empress Dowager.
i suspect the emperor did it to protect him from the empress. if he's sick, he's not a threat and the emperor can dote over him without putting him in danger. i think he loved his son a lot... AND poisoned him.

Stopped watching this around episode 8 because the fl was getting on my nerves a bit, but kept coming here everyday…
it still remains to be seen. FL is an ice queen. so the whole drama now hinges on how fiery it is when he finally breaks down her walls. theyre stringing us along still. we don't know if this show good or bad yet. depends on if they're toying with us or if they will deliver the goods.
