There's no novel about Wang Zanghai's life specifically. You only get to see bits and pieces of his life and his massive influence in the various novels in the Daomu Biji/Grave Robbers' Chronicles book series (and of course the dramas based on them). So yes, this will be mostly an original script. But Wang Zanghai is also responsible for a lot of the mysteries in the books and I think there will be some influence of that in the drama. Because if there isn't, why even bother getting the rights for the story.
Just watched the trailer, looks really interesting! The name of Jing Boran's character is a bit on the nose, though, considering the kind of life he leads (led?). 😂
