I feel sorry for the actors bc they are amazing, and I love both Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan dearly.
Unfortunately, the cinematography, lighting, and editing are very poor. I feel claustrophobic watching it.
Usually, cinematography moves from wide shots to mid shots, then to close-ups and details. Here they are stuck in the middle plans and close-ups.
Lighting is too even and bright for most scenes, giving a cheap daytime TV and theatrical effect. The temperature of the light is also off. While scones on the walls and other sources of “natural” lighting are very warm, scenes were illuminated with much brighter and and cooler lighting. In summary, it gives a very unnatural and unbelievable setting even with decent acting.
I don’t see any issues with it being a republican era drama. I just watched Footprints of Change; the first story was in the republican era as well, and there were no issues; it was decently filmed.
I think Overdo had enormous potential but unfortunately was chosen as the wrong director for the project, who chose the wrong team. I hope this drama won’t affect the careers of ZLH and WCR; they are very talented and deserve top projects.
I'm generally surprised, bc there are dozens of full-length dramas streamed monthly, and most of them have no production issues and are very decently/profeccionally produced even with smaller budgets.
I never called kind FL an idiot bc she is kind. Ye Li in The First Jasmine is extremely strong, smart, and kind. Even with mental health issues, I don't know who could dare call her an idiot.
Watched the first 3 episodes. Visuals are stunning, and the main leads are criminally beautiful. But I don’t get why FL is so unlikable :( She is really cold and bitchy, shown as very one-dimensional; it's difficult to follow her journey and care about her.
