read the novel. the title is The Pillow Book. it's much better than drama ver actually because the story is focusing on them Fengjiu and Donghua, plus you'll feel the situation of the universe after Yehua and Bai Qian's wedding which is also fun to know. This drama added new unnecessary stories for Ji Heng which doesn't exist in book just to give the actress more screentimes, which makes the book feel superior. Plus I think this drama doesn't give a justice to Ye Qingti character. In the book this man really treated Fengjiu so well to the point it's very reasonable that Fengjiu gave so much effort to save him and made him ascend to immortal. Give the book a chance! This drama adaptation is very close to the book tho but there are parts that aren't portrayed so well by the drama

At first, I was hesitant to watch this drama too because I thought the plot would be heavy, boring politics with stupid predicatable plot just like hundred period dramas I've ever seen in my life. But I was wrong!!!! This drama is the true masterpiece, excellent writing, well executed, has right portion of comedy, unpredictable plot and I really really enjoyed this drama so much. I wish I could erase my memory and able to feel the experience of watching JOL for the first time again. Every character is alive, not just the main leads but everyone feels alive and has personalities. Maybe if you judge based on posters, the main casts are not handsome enough and full of old veterans but please give them a chance!!! There are other casts who will give you eye candy too anyway. Once you watch their great performance with masterpiece script, you'll be heavily attached to them regardless the stance of their characters (gray/green/red flags) and visuals. Every character added layer to the plot and useful so you will never think someone is there just to drag out the episode. Watch from the first season!! I don't think I should tell you the summary of the plot because discovering the plot by watching with no expectation is the best.

Agree... Season 2 has better script but most actors here lacked of acting skills and charms/star powers. They're main characters but giving supporting roles vibes imo so I didn't feel attached to them and not even care about their activities outside drama. I mainly watched this drama because I love Soul Land so much. However overall S2 is still better at least if we put the importance of plot above everything else
