Medical Drama with Comedy, Action, Satire & Emotions | Best Start to 2025

It has been quite sometime, since I have pulled an all-nighter to binge a drama. Probably as most new dramas are released weekly or have multiple seasons, but this is short, crisp medical drama packed with comedy, action, and emotions—no dull moments. I love that each episode has its own story/cases while maintaining an overarching plot.

Story Summary:
At the heart of Trauma Code: Heroes to the Call is Baek Kang-hyuk (played by Ju Ji Hoon), the quintessential hero who navigates life-and-death situations with remarkable skill and charm, all while challenging the hospital’s profit-driven priorities. Initially met with resistance from seasoned doctors, Kang-hyuk's idealism gradually influences and transforms their perspectives. It’s not just a one-man show; Kang-hyuk also fosters the personal growth of his aides, Jae-won and nurse Cheon Jang-mi.

Acting:
The cast and crew deliver outstanding performances, each with meaningful character arcs. However, the three standout roles are Baek Kang Hyuk, Yang Jae Won, and Cheon Jang Mi. Ju Ji Hoon continues to impress since his Goong days, while this is my first drama of Choo Young Woo he captures attention with his remarkable acting - and am going to watch more of his works. The rest of the cast enhances the narrative, providing substantial support to the main leads as either allies or adversaries.

Overall:
If you haven’t started this drama yet, you’re missing out! This is not your typical medical drama; it's infused with unfiltered comedy, larger-than-life action sequences, and a satirical take on how money influences people. All this is wrapped up in an emotionally compelling story that’s sure to leave a lasting impression. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Must watch for Unique, Crisp Story & Flawless Acting | Mixed feels for Ending

This drama blends superheroes, con-artists, and time travel in a rom-com—a unique mix that works surprisingly well. Weekly episodes kept me intrigued with their perfect balance of plot, acting, short format, and music. Rated 8 (Great with Few Flaws) because the ending, while fitting the "atypical" theme, left mixed feelings.

➥ Strengths:
✦ Unique Story: Fantasy, romance, suspense, comedy, and heavy topics (trauma, depression, death, school bullying, body image) are all given proper attention with satisfying conclusions or hints for the future.
✦ Pace: Loving the short formats. Initial episodes build the foundation, then the plot picks up, giving answers and introducing new suspense/twists.
✦ Acting: Flawless. Main leads have natural chemistry. Supporting characters also shine, offering insights into their own stories/challenges/motives.
✦ Music: "Lee Sora’s I See You" is haunting and perfectly placed, adding to the drama's mysterious and atypical nature (Link Below)
✦ Cinematography: Aesthetically pleasing with well-blended fantasy effects. Visuals of characters' clothes, make-up, and settings are balanced and fitting.

➥ Weak Points:
Ending 5 Minutes: True to the atypical theme, but the implied conclusion leaves mixed feelings. Some may want a more detailed explanation, though the time jump is lovely to watch.

➥ Overall:
Highly recommend binge-watching this drama—a neat package of romance, suspense, superpowers, family/friend support, scams, comedy, time travel, and action. The cinematography and music enhance the viewing experience, making it a delight to watch!

The Most Satisfying Slaps Ever

➥ WHY I STARTED THIS DRAMA
I started this drama as soon as it dropped on Netflix, without doing my usual ritual of checking trailers, reviews, or ratings beforehand. All I knew was that I love larger-than-life stories that tackle socially relevant issues. Within minutes, I was hooked. The action sequences immediately grabbed my attention, & seeing four actors I absolutely adore - Kim Mu Yeol, Lee Sung Min, Jin Ki Joo, & PO - made the experience even better. Having loved many of their previous works, I was already invested.

While watching, I checked MDL & found the ratings and comments quite promising. Then I discovered that this drama exists in the same universe as "Study Group". My reaction was simple: "No wonder!" I absolutely loved that drama & had even mentioned in my review that any sequel, spin-off, or side story from that world would likely be just as enjoyable. Turns out, I was right. [My review for STUDY GROUP: https://mydramalist.com/profile/omo-omo-omo/review/426780]

➥ BRIEF DRAMA SUMMARY
This drama is built around a highly idealistic premise. A special unit is formed to protect victims - whether students, parents, or teachers - & ensure that the right to education, fairness, & happiness is not taken away by those in power. While the story begins with a personal incident, it gradually expands to tackle deeper social issues, particularly those affecting the education system.

Like "Study Group" & "Trauma Code: Heroes on Call", it presents a world where people are willing to fight back against corruption & injustice. As unrealistic as that may sound, that's exactly what makes stories like these so satisfying to watch.

➥ MY FAVORITE PARTS OF THIS DRAMA
In reality, corruption often runs too deep & those who try to challenge it are frequently silenced. So even when these dramas push the boundaries of realism, I can't help but cheer when justice is served & get emotional when victims finally get the victory they deserve. Maybe that's why dramas like "Teach You a Lesson", "Study Group", & "Trauma Code: Heroes on Call" resonate so strongly with me.

The acting, comedy, action, & emotional moments are all incredibly effective, elevated further by sharp direction, background score & strong cinematography. The four leads are impeccable - as expected. Whether making you laugh, inspiring admiration, or pulling at your heartstrings, they make every moment count. Even within the drama's larger-than-life setup, they deliver memorable performances.

I also appreciated the recurring focus on juvenile offenders & how often they commit crimes yet escape meaningful consequences. It reminded me of "Juvenile Justice", & a small part of me would have loved a crossover. Then again, having Lee Sung Min in both dramas is satisfying enough in its own way.

➥ SHOULD YOU WATCH IT
If you enjoy this genre of drama, this is an easy recommendation & a must-watch. It is highly entertaining, emotionally satisfying, & delivers exactly what it sets out to do. Even if you have not watched similar dramas, but want to try - do it give a go.

Just like "Study Group", I hope this series receives a sequel & expands further. From what I understand, the "Blue String" universe is quite vast, & even though I haven't read the source material, I would love to see more stories from this world brought to life.

Not Perfect, but Entertaining!

I’m going to share this review in a point-wise format so I can cover every aspect of this drama. I know it’s extremely popular, with ratings often around 9/10. While I respect those, I hope my views are also well received, because I’m on the other side. I liked the drama, but it wasn’t great for me, and my rating reflects that. I try to be as objective as possible, no matter how much bias or love I may carry for certain artists. With that in mind, here’s my take on "Perfect Crown".

[1] Expectations vs Reality
I had difficulty getting into this drama, but I’m glad I stuck with it. I expected a mix of serious politics and romance at equal levels. Very early on, I realized my expectations were mismatched. While politics and mystery were part of the story, the focus leaned more on visuals and entertainment. This isn’t a very serious drama - it should be seen as casual viewing.

[2] Non-Couple Chemistry That Surprised Me
For me, Ian and the Queen Mother had stronger chemistry than the main leads. There, I said it, and I won’t take it back. Their limited scenes, especially in Episode 11, were brilliant - their eyes spoke volumes, and the emotions swirling beneath were sheer acting brilliance. Even their casual meetup to buy a violin in Episode 12 was effortless, they truly looked like friends. I truly hope these actors reunite as leads someday. Since they’re from the same agency, I feel their kinship translated into authentic on-screen emotion.

[3] Huiju’s Character
I didn’t enjoy IU’s character, Huiju. This isn’t about IU’s acting - she portrayed it well - but I don’t like her in such roles. I felt similarly about her character in "Hotel Luna". On the other hand, I appreciated her acting in "My Mister" and "WLGYT" (from clips I’ve seen). It’s a matter of personal preference, but it did affect my overall experience of the drama.

[4] Supporting Cast Highlights
Huiju’s brother and sister-in-law were brilliant. I expected nothing less, especially from the brother. I had seen him in "Mr. Queen", where his comic timing was amazing, and here too his arc was engaging. They became my favorite duo.

The aides, Hyeon and Hye Jeong, were adorable together - I’d love to see them in more dramas. The other supporting roles from the royal household were also strong. Special mention goes to the young King: he was adorable, and his crying scenes were genuinely emotional. His moments with his uncle were endearing. He’s definitely a talent to watch for in the future.

[5] Underused Antagonists
The antagonists were under-utilized, and their arcs felt convoluted in a disappointing way - especially given the talents of Steve Noh and Jo Jae Yun.

Steve Noh, as Prime Minister Min, had a weak storyline. This was a shame, since I’ve seen him excel in both good and evil roles. In the final episodes, his sinister aura finally came through, but it felt disconnected and poorly justified. If his arc had been about long-standing feelings for Huiju, or plotting to abolish the Crown, it would have made sense. Instead, his storyline was too weakly written.

Jo Jae Yun, as the Queen Mother’s father, was predictably cast as an antagonist, but his role felt more like cameo appearances than a full-fledged villain. It was disheartening to see two brilliant artists not used to their full potential.

[6] Byeon Woo Seok as Prince Ian
This is the most difficult point to write. Those who know me - or have read my comments - know how much I love BWS. When he rose to fame with "Lovely Runner", I was over the moon, having followed him since his modeling days and supporting roles. Seeing an artist you’ve supported gain popularity feels amazing.

"Lovely Runner" was charming but felt a little short to me. I thought "Perfect Crown" would be similar, and it was, but I wanted the story to showcase his brilliance more fully. It did - but only in bits and pieces.

His eye acting is phenomenal. I’m a sucker for male actors who deliver crying or anguish scenes well, and BWS is one of them. His visuals and awkward antics make him both handsome and endearing.

That’s why I expected him to excel as a Prince. I had seen him do it in "Moonshine", where his royal presence and grace were convincing. In "Perfect Crown", however, that presence was missing. Even with background music effects, it didn’t feel authentic. The Queen Mother, by contrast, embodied effortless beauty and grace.

I know BWS can portray sinister and vulnerable roles - he proved that in "Strong Nam Soon", a drama I otherwise disliked but where he shone. I expected the same here, but it felt lacking. Part of this may be the script and direction, and partly the chemistry with IU, which felt forced. They looked good together and acted well, but I didn’t feel the butterflies. His scenes with the Queen Mother in Episode 11, however, were captivating.

It’s not about his acting - artists and directors bring out the best in each other. Here, it seemed the drama relied on visuals, a decent story, and cinematography, knowing hype would carry it. Less effort was made to deepen the narrative.

[7] Final Thoughts
This is my opinion, and I know it differs from most. My expectations were different, and even after trying to realign them, the drama didn’t meet them. At its core, "Perfect Crown" is pure entertainment, nothing more.

I’d love to see BWS in a non-romantic hero role - he would excel. I’ll continue supporting all his projects. Steve Noh already has a diverse range, and I hope to see him in stronger roles (this one I’d like to forget, except for his sharp jawline and aura). Gong Seung Yeon has been brilliant in everything I’ve seen ("Are You Human", "Karma", and now this), and I’m excited to see more of her - her face card is truly unmatched.

Watch it as a Prequel to 2025 Drama & for Ji Chang Wook ❤️

Saw this movie & writing this review in 2024: This film is a pure blockbuster action-thriller, with focus on car chases, fight scenes, slow-motions, explosions etc. There is not much on the mystery (of the real killer - it revealed very early on), logic/reason behind their action is not impactful/suspensefully revealed, or any time given on any characters' development.
I assumed it to be a psychological mystery/thriller given the synopsis of the drama but was disappointed on that front.

JCW is a treat to watch as always with his looks and acting as a game addict turned action hero. But my expectation were otherwise set - so this was an okay movie for me. I'm expecting things to be better now that the reboot will be out in 2025, played again by JCW. It will also have EXO's DO & other famous cast members, so hoping for the scale to be larger, more detailed and antagonist to be revealed with a twist (psycho character played by DO would be great too!)

VERDICT - Can Pass, unless one wants to know the original story like me, before watching the Fabricated City drama in 2025.

Magical Story with a Poetic Ending - Prime Showtime!

SHORT REVIEW

♥ Plot:
The show uses the background of past and present lives mixing in, as a haughty magician and honest policewomen join forces with ghosts to fight evils of society. With each episode you get to discover the main leads past lives, the ghosts' lives and how they overcome their regrets, deepest wishes and have a happy ending.

♥ Recommended:
Definitely worth a one-time watch if you like comedy, mystery, mythology, historical elements - all tied in a magical story and great acting!

LONG VERSION

♥ Notable Characters:
• Haughty magician ML who disregards his roots of being a shaman and employs ghosts as his apprentices for magic shows (also disregarding labor laws :P ). Over the course of the story, with help from people around him, especially the FL - he realizes his destiny, how he cannot live alone and must protect the ones he cares for.

• The FL is vivacious and honest policewoman, who is on her own revenge path, but meets the ML and his ghost apprentices - ultimately realizing how she is a part of the past life, falling in love with ML, avenging her father and continuing to help people around her. She is the moral compass which keeps this Magic Factory going in the right path.

• The Helping Ghosts & Spirits: Initially provide a comedic relief and bring the ML and FL closer, but overtime, we see their own stories, their own desires and the unfair hand they were dealt. But in spite of that they did not resent their fate, but chose to rise above it and truly attained Nirvana.

Special mention of Ah Reum - she herself was shown to be specially abled in her life, and so thought to help people around her as she got help when she was alive. Alas, her death was unfortunate, yet she does not resent any of it - instead chooses to help people as ghost and as her last wish!

♥ Random Notes:
• I always wanted to see PHJ in action, always knowing he is a good actor but dropped the idea after seeing him in Cheese in The Trap (blame the story execution). Finally glad that I watched this drama and saw his acting skills.
• Love Jin Ki Joo - beautiful and what an amazing actress. Other recommendation: The Secret Life of My Secretary, Midnight
• I saw Jung Joon Ho, first and last in True Beauty as father of the ML, and that was nothing in comparison the great actor he is.

Learning to Love, Live and Letting Go!

Stories that intertwine life and death are never easy—they are hauntingly beautiful, carrying the weight of emotions that linger long after the final scene. From the start, the presence of second chances and grim reapers walking the living world sets the stage for an emotional rollercoaster. And this drama delivers, excelling in storytelling, performances, and an emotional depth that leaves you with both tears and smiles.

I have always been drawn to narratives exploring life, death, and what comes after. In reality, I often find myself reflecting on existence—on my own life, those around me, and the inevitability of time passing. The memory of loved ones I have lost stays with me, making me wonder how life would have unfolded had they been here, how they would perceive the world today.

So when I saw this drama, I felt an immediate pull but tempered my expectations. The inclusion of high school romance gave me pause, as I have long outgrown such themes. Yet, it exceeded my expectations, not only in its narration and performances but in how it addressed the universal truth—embracing life, death, and everything in between. Every character played a meaningful role, much like in real life, where each person contributes to the unfolding of our own stories.

Special credit goes to the leads—the FL seamlessly transitions between the lively high-schooler and the sorrowful adult, while the ML embodies both warmth and wisdom, a kind soul turned grim reaper. Through their journey, the drama reminds us that life is never easy. There will always be highs and lows, moments where it feels unbearable, when giving up seems like the only option. But it teaches us that our story does not end there—there is more to live, more to love. As Master Oogway wisely said, “Life is a gift, and that’s why they call it the present.” — this drama beautifully echoes that sentiment!

This review might feel personal, but I believe that is the greatest testament to the drama’s emotional power—it makes you feel, reflect, and connect on a deeply personal level.

In essence, this drama is a poignant portrayal of friendship, family, second chances, forgiveness, and finding the courage to live while accepting death when the time comes. It is rare to find a drama that blends such profound themes so seamlessly and if you cherish stories that explore the raw truths of life and death, then this is a must-watch. 100% recommended!

Korea's Clark Kent who is a studious One Punch Man | Best of 2025

High-school dramas about bullying and injustice are common, but "Study Group" stands out with its larger-than-life fights and overpowered (OP) character. Though I haven't read the webtoon, I love the shonen-style action and comedy. What sets it apart is the depth it offers through a larger universe, unique characters, and their motives, adding layers to the main story. These narratives are special because, while we can't be OP characters in real life, it's immensely satisfying to see underdogs win and just characters triumph over injustice.

In Short: "Study Group" follows GaMin, who trains his body to enhance his brainpower. He forms a study group at his new school, constantly tested by a gangster-like student who runs the place. GaMin and his group showcase their resilience and win the respect of other students by "Creating Opportunities Even in Hellish Situations."

From acting and action sequences to comedy, deep emotional backstories, suspense, and the overall vibe of good vs. evil, this drama is entertaining from start to finish. I've seen Hwang Min-Hyun before, but this is his best role yet. The drama, while complete in itself, leaves us hoping for sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and more. If they maintain this style, I guarantee those would be masterpieces too.

Special shoutout to the main OST: Back Packer (https://youtu.be/7gb8xOAPX3Y?si=nUg8fw7fF7dkueqa) - an epic, un-skippable opening theme that I'll probably overuse in everything! 🎶

2025 has started great and is setting benchmarks one after the other. First came Truama Code which though a different story has the same vibe of action/larger than life characters, and now Study Group - both entertaining in every minute of its runtime & highly recommended for watch and rewatches!

a WONDERful hidden gem of 2026!

I did not expect this drama to be "this" goooood!

This is not your average superhero drama. It's wacky, packed with slapstick comedy, and filled with larger-than-life action sequences. But don't be fooled by the silliness - at its heart is a compelling story supported by strong performances and heartfelt themes of family, friendship, and community. The direction and cinematography are also exceptional, often feeling more like a big-budget action film than a TV drama. Easily one of the most underrated gems of 2026, and if you're skipping it, you're seriously missing out.

Everything about this drama was top-notch, but here are my favorite aspects:

(1) The Humor:
If you're a fan of slapstick comedy, exaggerated action, and absurd situations done tastefully, this drama is for you. Beneath all the laughs is a layered story that even touches on social themes, including the question of how far human greed can go. The comic timing of the three WonderFools - played by Park Eun Bin, Choi De Hoon, and Im Sung Jae - is impeccable. Choi De Hoon, in particular, is an absolute standout as Mr. Son. Branded as the neighborhood fools, these accidental superheroes deliver nonstop chaos and hilarity that had me laughing throughout.

(2) Cha Eun Woo:
I won't lie - Cha Eun Woo has always been one of my biases because of his face card. At the same time, I never considered him a particularly strong actor. Handsome? Absolutely. But often a little stiff. I've watched most of his dramas because they're popular - and because, well, it's Cha Eun Woo. However, this drama genuinely impressed me. His acting has improved significantly, and this role proves it.

His character initially requires him to portray two very different personas, and he pulls it off remarkably well. The telekinetic hero role suits him perfectly. He is charismatic as an action hero on a secret mission, convincing in the emotional moments, and downright adorable when playing the bumbling Clark Kent-esque persona hiding his Superman alter ego.

What impressed me most is that he more than held his own alongside Park Eun Bin and Choi De Hoon. Park Eun Bin is one of the finest actresses working today, and Choi De Hoon consistently elevates every project he's in. The fact that Eun Woo kept pace with actors of that caliber is a testament to how far he has come. Is he one of the industry's greatest actors yet? Not quite. But this performance left me genuinely impressed. In my opinion, this is one of the best roles of his career so far. (And yes, I am still waiting for him to play a villain - the kind who seems innocent and trustworthy until the final reveal.)

(3) Right Focus on the Genre/Tags:
The drama includes a touch of romance, but it is woven naturally into the main story and never feels forced. Too often, dramas shoehorn romance into stories simply because the leads are attractive. I was worried that would happen here, but thankfully it didn't. The focus remains on the action, comedy, mystery, and the relationships between friends, family, and a close-knit small-town community. Setting the story in 1999 also adds a wonderful dose of late-'90s and early-2000s nostalgia. The props, costumes, and soundtrack all help bring that era to life.

(4) The VFX & Production Quality:
To be honest, when I first heard about this drama, I didn't have particularly high expectations. The premise sounded a little cliché and gimmicky. I only kept it on my watchlist because of Eun Woo and Eun Bin. When I finally started watching, I was blown away. The production quality is genuinely impressive. The visual effects, action sequences, cinematography, and overall scale feel closer to a blockbuster film than a television drama. While I'm not saying it's on the level of Marvel or DC's biggest productions, it comes surprisingly close at times and delivers a fantastic visual experience. Combined with the strong acting, engaging story, and well-paced narrative, it makes for an incredibly entertaining watch from start to finish.

OVERALL:
I highly recommend this drama. It's just a tiny step below masterpiece status for me because I felt there were some unresolved gaps regarding the villains' storylines. I understand these may be intentional cliffhangers for a potential Season 2, so it's not necessarily a flaw - more of a small speed bump in an otherwise excellent viewing experience. If I compare it to the dramas I've personally rated a perfect 10, it doesn't quite reach that level. This rating comes more from instinct than logic; for some reason, I can't give it full marks. Then again, it might change if I re-watch. But make no mistake: this is still a fantastic drama and one of the most enjoyable surprises I've watched this year.

BONUS:
This is the first time I've seen Cha Eun Woo smoking on screen - and looking absolutely "smoking hot" while doing it. The white vest, tousled hair, and effortlessly badass energy were a whole moment. Then the finale has a "bullet scene" which is a complete aura-farming moment. If that doesn't convince you to watch, I don't know what will. Maybe this video might help: https://youtube.com/shorts/VfmhKFo4D8w?si=jqr9Mbh14oPXHTMr

Vengeance can give Justice, but real peace comes from forgiveness!

⭐PROS:
The story's main theme is vengeance by a mother who lost a child and a child who lost a parent - who make questionable decisions while blinded by anger & grief, unaware that there is a bigger mastermind behind the injustice they are going through. As the drama progresses & unravels the mystery - it beautifully showcases characters coming to terms with their loss, grief, loneliness & finally peace - in varying degrees.

The latter is a great point shown in the drama - cause while the incident (loss of a dear one) may have been a common point for many characters involved, each of them has their own way of coping with it. And in doing so it shows the growth and strength of that character. Love the ending - I like how realistic they kept it without making it flowery in the end, cause such stories are raw emotions throughout which you cannot tie the ends with a flower and bow. Really likes how each character comes to together in the hour of need - in spite of the bad blood they had before.

⭐CONS:
The story is not new - and while the actors are all great names of the industry and deliver their role well, it was not remarkable/memorable for me. I have seen all the actors in other dramas and know how powerful they can be - here they felt weak in comparison. Not that they are bad - just that they are doing this for the sake of it - they are actors here, they did not live the characters - as per me.

Also, the pacing of this drama was a con for me, and this is a personal opinion. I'm someone who enjoys dramas having breakneck speed, but I believe while this drama maybe tagged as thriller, mystery - it was that but also healing and wholesome, hence for many the pacing would not be an issue but rather a very emotional ride.

⭐OVERALL:
Hence, rating this is a 7 - which in my books is a good drama. Not a masterpiece or something I'll watch again, or recommend greatly to anyone. But rather it is a good watch one time watch if these are the themes that interest you.

⭐ MILD SPOILER - to highlight some great work / small things but went a long way:

- Love how the son-in-law comes to take care of the mother-in-law. And even before that while his mother was earlier a cold character, it is amazing to see how in her heart she actually a warm person and is just looking out for her family - immediate and in-laws too.
- The sisters, tbh, it would not work the way it did in real life; but it was a beautiful relationship and very well done by both the actresses.
- The brother-in-law had a very minimal screentime, but still was so crucial at important change of scenes. Usually in dramas crucial information is lost because main characters "miss" each other and then cause a lot frustrating misunderstandings. I like how here the brother-in-law was the narrator in a way who kept the information flowing from one character to another. Eg: how he tells his sister-in-law about the reality of Cha Eun Woo's character. Also how in the end - he tells his sister-in-law about Eun Woo's mother etc. Also his mother acted as a conduit to relay the information to her elder son about his mother-in-law 's dementia.

Not Ji Sung’s Best | Started Strong, Ended Flat

I usually write long reviews, but this one will be short — because honestly, it was disappointing and did not live up to my expectations, which were quite high because of "Ji Sung" and the genre of this drama. The kinds of projects he usually picks tend to excel in every aspect — writing, acting, music, and overall execution. He generally shines in crime and investigation thrillers, so I naturally expected something gripping and intense. While the drama started off well, it quickly turned bland for me.

Around episodes 10–11, the adrenaline rush and suspense — which are essential for a drama of this genre — completely fizzled out. The villains weren’t nearly menacing enough, and the cat-and-mouse dynamic between good and evil felt hollow. The pursuit of justice lacked that fist-pump, edge-of-your-seat energy such dramas usually deliver.

"Ji Sung", as always, delivered a solid performance — that’s never the issue. He carries his roles with presence and conviction. But the storyline was weak, and the ending felt rushed and underwhelming. The supporting characters and even the antagonist had potential in their own right, but when the story itself is convoluted and poorly structured, it leaves little impact — both during the watch and after it ends.

I started this drama solely for Ji Sung, but unfortunately, this wasn’t one of his stronger works. I’d honestly recommend skipping this one and instead watching his better dramas in similar genres like "Defendant", "Doctor John", or "The Devil Judge" — the last one especially stands out for its seductive tone, music, and performances. And if you want something completely different, go for "Kill Me, Heal Me" — still my forever favorite. It was the first drama of his that I watched, and the one that made me a fan

unhealthily rewatching it since 2019 - for Sugino & cute fluff moments

This film is simply my guilty pleasure - to watch Sugino & Ryusei over & over & internally scream at the heart-fluttering moments shown. Honestly if you compare with the other shows/movies I have rated 8 - this is definitely not in the same space, but given the unhealthy times I have rewatched this & it remains a comfort film, the rating technicalities can be overlooked.

The story is delightfully simple and cute, with the perfect amount of fanservice to keep you hooked. It has its ups and downs, but nothing too intense or shocking – just a smooth, enjoyable ride. The three main leads deliver stellar performances, beautifully supported by the rest of the cast. The film concludes on a high note, leaving you grinning and blushing like crazy – I've been doing just that from my first watch to the present!

Best Part: Sugino Yosuke - just cannot get enough of this man. I have been following his works since long, and while this is one of his early ones and not enough to showcase his talent, I highly recommend watching him in Barakamon, Love's In Sight. Am not sure, but I feel he is still not the most popular J-actors, but he truly deserves to be. In contrast, Yokohama Ryusei is a more popular face and while I have seen him here and there - Cursed in Love is one of his best works I feel.

Unique & Emotional Tale of Life, Death and Light Bulbs!

Stories that tip-toe around life and death always draw my attention. I often wonder what will happen to us after death or what if our loved ones who have passed away see us/be proud of what we are doing with life now. Which is why the upcoming Korean drama based on the same webtoon as this Chinese film has been on high priority for me since long. But I was really curious on the plot and therefore gave in to my urges - as I thought I'll get to know the story in a shorter time since it is a movie.
And while I was prepared for an emotional ride and life lessons - the movie still captivated me with its unique narration, analogy, acting and hauntingly beautiful music score.

➥ POSITIVES | ✦ Unique Narration and Symbolism ✦ Emotional Impact ✦ Acting ✦ Cinematography ✦ Music ✦
The narrative delicately explores life and death, portraying poignant character journeys and deeply capturing human emotions. Innovative storytelling and symbolic light bulbs distinguish the film, initially misleading viewers into thinking it's a horror mystery before revealing deeper layers. Exceptional acting, cinematography, and music harmoniously amplify the emotional impact, connecting the audience to the characters' stories

➥ NEGATIVES | ✦ Predictability ✦ Pacing ✦ Length ✦
Having seen similar stories, I found the plot somewhat predictable, and while well-executed, it didn't deeply impact me. The latter part of the film (main leads' story) dragged slightly, and I ended up skipping forward in some parts, which lessened the overall experience. Additionally, the film felt too short to fully explore its themes, suggesting it might have worked better as a drama series.

➥ VERDICT | Despite some predictability and pacing issues which are more from a personal preference - the movie is a compelling watch that effectively pulls on the heartstrings. I recommend it, but be sure to have tissues handy.

➥ Note: Korean Drama Adaption | Given the movie felt short, I am eagerly awaiting the Korean adaption that will be a drama. Given how good the Chinese movie was and the fact that some of my favorite actors are in the lead role - I already have high expectations from it. I hope it will be more emotional, detailed and end up being a masterpiece of 2024. It would definitely be a good way to end the year, from a drama standpoint.

one of the best cooking showdowns - came for Triple Star, stayed for the addictive format!

As a foodie + amateur cook, I adore culinary reality shows, especially MasterChef. But lately, they’re all about sob stories and unnecessary cursing—just cook and crown a winner already! While Scott Kang drew me in with his looks and talent (thank you, social media) - it is the format of the show that made be stick. Was planning to see only Triple Star's parts and skip the rest, but Korean show-makers really know how to deliver a crisp, thrilling show with really intense cliffhangers. I mean really when those challenges ended at a cliffhanger and the beats of ending credits rolled in - I was like ARGGGHHH no I NEED to watch the next episode - who won and who was eliminated!

Though am not going to deny the fact that most of it is scripted and I was not really thrilled with the winner (he kind of had a cocky attitude from day 1 and the way he survived in last 8 made it pretty straightforward that they all knew the winner then and there). Still it was great to see - all the chef, their amazing work and some backstories!

The rating on MDL is for drama/movies as ACTING here would mean something else, so this is what I mean with my ratings:
1) Story = Format of the Reality Show: Was it thrilling, exciting and stuck to focus of cooking!
2) Acting = Talent of the Chefs, and Rating Mechanism by Judges, their Comments etc
Rest are as the word suggests.

Overall: Recommend watching this - as a way to pass time, and especially if you do like reality shows!

❤️Special Mention - My Favorite Chefs & Why ❤️
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Triple Star (should have been the winner, but I guess it would have been obvious then too)
2) Chef Cooking Maniac - what a cutie, and his backstory really echoed on a personal level. #appearences-are-not-everything
3) Chef Edward Lee - what a genius! Made some of the most ingenious dishes.
4) Chef Choi Hyun-seok - love his salt theatrics before this show, and here what a cunning and winning mindset he had. I think he shocked himself with his own result in the survivor challenge. Or it was scripted.
5) Chef Jung Ji Sun - I think want to see more of her - loved every dish she made, especially dimsums. No wonder she is called the Queen of DimSums!
