I also got confused when it was set, but Lu Feng even had an earpiece, so I think it's supposed to be in pretty modern times, and that Yichen's family just happen to be a bit old school. The freaking out part in school I actually don't know how it is right now, but China isn't really famous for being accepting of homosexual/queer couples.
