Perhaps I'm late to this. But I think that Hirayasumi has that platonic relationship and community vibe that's somewhat similar to this. But it's set in modern Japan and with no fantasy elements.

I think it's referred to by a different name now. It was a unfortunate stampede during a Halloween event that led to the death of over 100 people, right when this show was airing.
