I love this drama so far. The cinematography, the framing, the OST and the acting are all top notch, and the plot feels surprisingly refreshing. I also really love the atmosphere. It is calm and serene, the pacing feels exactly right, nothing is rushed and nothing feels forced. The relationship between Lin Zhixia and her brother is probably one of my favorite parts. Their dynamic is crafted so well. It feels natural, funny and emotional without the drama needing to explain everything. Her brother is actually my favorite second lead so far. I have seen people saying that they cannot feel any chemistry between the main leads, but I personally see it very differently. Their chemistry is not loud or obvious. It feels more like an invisible bond between them, almost like a soulmate connection that neither of them fully understands yet. He admires her deeply, and even in the quieter scenes I can feel that he is always paying attention to her. Hu Yitian’s acting may seem a little stiff sometimes, but I honestly think his character is supposed to be like that. He is restrained and not very expressive with words, but his eyes transmit much more than he says. Tian Xiwei is amazing, as expected. She makes Lin Zhixia feel intelligent, strange, vulnerable, childish and emotionally inexperienced all at the same time. Her acting never feels forced, especially in the smaller moments when she is barely speaking but you can still understand exactly what she is feeling. The director has made a really beautiful product so far. Every scene feels carefully framed, the music fits the emotions perfectly and even the simplest conversations have something underneath them. I honestly had almost no expectations except for Tian Xiwei’s acting, especially because of the complete lack of promotion before the release. Maybe that is also why the drama is surprising me so much. So far, I love almost everything about Genius Girlfriend. It is quiet, warm, emotionally detailed and much better crafted than I expected.
I have a feeling Lin Zhixia is going to make me laugh much more than I expected, especially in those awkward moments when she tries to understand people, emotions and everyday situations through logic and mathematical formulas. I already love that the genius is the female lead for once, instead of the usual setup where the girl simply admires the brilliant boy. Right now I really need something refreshing: a serene romance, warm school dynamics, family comedy and very little angst. From the material released so far, this does not feel like a formulaic youth drama. The autumn scenes give it such a calm, lived-in atmosphere, and the proposal at the end gives me such a satisfying ,healing vibe—as if the story is less interested in temporary misunderstandings and more in how two people quietly grow beside each other from adolescence into adult life. My impression is that the real charm may come from watching an unusual girl understand friendship, love and the world around her in her own very logical way, sounds exactly like the kind of warm, comforting story I am in the mood for. That mixture of brilliance, innocence, emotional confusion and healing could become one of Tian Xiwei’s most distinctive characters. Her decision cannot guarantee that the adaptation, editing or promotion will be perfect. But it strongly suggests that the script she received contained something worth choosing. Especially after Pursuit of Jade, I doubt she would deliberately follow it with a completely empty heroine.
