I know in cdramas some things appear out of left field especially with the endings but IMO this was necessary. It showed the other side of the coin: i.e the lived experiences of women from well off families living in male-run households. The abuse they endured even though they were all from reputable families, and the lack of control over their fate. I think having those episodes showed why the Rong family fight to uphold their centuries long traditions.
I am no fan of testing love but I also think that was one of the reasons for the latter episodes: the ML facing the choice of “abandoning” the things he’s likely yearned for all his life (family and title) was a bigger obstacle compared to if he had remained the official from humble begginings.
I did not get one part. ML's biological brother Shu Yu was killed. My understanding is that Shu Yu's wife was…
to understand how she is a mastermind, there’s a part they say a concubine would have not known that medication could result in death and even if she did she had no way of getting it. then as Shanbao is leaving, she comments about ShuYu’s wife’s [medical] knowledge saying she didn’t realize in the wife’s family of origin women were the inheritors [of this knowledge].
I’d also say the MIL instigated her after askinnv Shanbao what if was like growing in the kind of family she did. After Shanbao leaves, her comments to ShuYu’s wife probably got he to see what her(ShuYu’s wife) later years would be like if she continued to endure.
FL becomes his concubine, they have a kid. A few years later, the kid gets some disease but FL is not allowed to see or even care for her sick kid cause she’s pregnant and they are afraid she could contract the illness. The kid dies. I think one of her childhood friends also dies or was sick then dies and they hide it from FL as well. Eventually she gets sick and does while pregnant too (can’t recall if she was in labor). The ending is unclear cause it could be interpreted that all this was a bad dream that ML having during an afternoon nap. They probably thought they were being creative with that ending but who gives af if it was a dream? Hard to remain satisfied with the ending after seeing all this bad shit happen. It’s been more than a year and I am still salty about this ending as you can tell. That was the last period k-drama I watched😤.
Drama is stupid.. It kills one that shouldn't die but let the other one live that should've died in the novel..…
True. XZG was good but I wish this was adapted in a place with no censorship issues cause we would have also got to see Ruan Lan Zhu as portrayed in the book which would have made for some happy watching.
Yes, the sleezy line "I like it when you say no" - breaks the complete build up.
Yeah, so unnecessary. This was a show where they could have gotten away without a bedroom scene but since they insisted on making one they should have done better.
I totally agree. I liked the show until the last episode which I feel could have been done better. The kisses at the end were weird plus it felt like Kano was being forced by Ogami to do something he did not want which did not sit well with me. I wish they can start making longer JBLs so stories can be properly fleshed out.
