According to the novel, there are 5 arches; 3 of them are chastity arches. They are made to honor exceptionally chaste widows. Fu family is a scholarly family and doesn't have much political power; for several generations, an important official hasn't come from the family, such as an imperial tutor or an important scholar. Because of that, they rely on forming strong marital bonds with superior families. So, having the honor of chastity arches shows that the women of the Fu family are honorable, virtuous, and chaste; aside from that, it also gives them an honorable status in society.
