There’s the fluffy historical dramas and then there is the gritty ones.
I think this director gives heft with his cinematography so it feels more reel. The music helps a lot with the weight of the scenes.

In the novel, the beginning is very different.
She was framed and locked in a room for three months before the princess decided to end the charade. After the scandal, she got ill and miscarried. While locked the princess was poisoning her but XFF knew something was off and was not drinking the “medicine” The princess finally sees that XFF is not taking it and orders her maids to hang her.
When she dies she wakes up as jiang li.
As for jiang li, when she learnt that her engagement with zhou yanbang had been transferred to her half sister, she jumped in the lake out of spite. She fell ill and died. She was at that place for only 5 years. Not ten like in the drama. Jiang li was very very different from the teen we saw in the drama. She seems spoiled and very difficult. Tong’er is also as feisty because she emulated her mistress’s behavior.
The novel has such a different beginning and both work.
