A Fascinating Toxic Relationship That Kept Me Hooked
Watching this show was wonderfully thought-provoking; I appreciate that there are talents willing to create content with psychological depth. The sub-narrative involving suicide was handled with exceptional care—grounded in reality and sensitive. It portrayed clinical depression in a realistic way.
However, the resolution of the main relationship is unacceptable because it sidesteps the toxic relationship between the Leads. Both leads and supporting actors gave stellar, spot-on performances, but the show's refusal to hold the leads accountable leaves the romance feeling unequal and unhealthy.
The MLs behavior follows a classic abusive cycle: anger and verbal abuse followed by loving apologies that serve as manipulation. Because this repeats without self-awareness or therapeutic growth, the final "happy ending" feels contrived and unrealistic! Expecting a relationship to thrive before the partners addresses their issues is a romantic myth.
The FL’s flaw remains her willingness to give away her agency. Participating in a clandestine workplace affair with a boss who admitted he couldn't offer a future created a toxic relationship . While she establishes some boundaries over time, she ultimately enables the imbalance again in the last episodes. Although he seeks consent before intimacy, he overrides her wishes the following morning by deliberately exposing their private night to her parents against her wish to conceal it. He then goes on to speak over and for her. She remains silent, reducing her back to a passive participant. Her growth remains questionable, evidenced by her taking on the physical burden of split-city commuting to Beijing rather than finding an equal middle ground.
