I think it was one of those "when time is missed" moments in life. He really wanted to, but when he got blocked by his dad and things happened (death, scams), he missed that opportunity in life. Which ends up as to why he works in the "club", and how their futures transpire the way they do.

It gives homage to the time period but also less makeup/filters mean you ACTUALLY see their expressions more etc.
Plus most actors have flawless skin anyway, so its good to see them as real people.
My grievance was the mechanic scene where SWL is in a t-shirt and his arm is so skinny >.<

It goes from 2002 through to 2003 and then quite swiftly through 2004-2005. Which is where the CP part ways. They reconvene in the 'present' which is 2011. Miao Jing is about 25 years old then, and Chen Yi would be 27-28.

Yeah I had heard of the that the Yu Zheng - SWL drama but not sure why YZ hated on him - he usually pushes all his stars so much.

This is only my second SWL drama, so I can't comment from extensive experience, but I have appreciated his performance here as Chen Yi compared to the other role I saw. Again, likely due to the depth of CY but also through SWL's growth I'm sure.

Thanks for sharing. Part of this is likely due to censorship as well. They also want to paint societal issues in a certain way. And also for this storyline to be attractive to mainstream audiences.

I’ve not watched too many SWL dramas, but I know he has been called stiff and wooden in previous roles.
We’re only a quarter of the way through and I must say I’m impressed by his performance as Chen Yi. Perhaps the role calls for more from his delivery too. There’s more nuance and layers compared to other characters he’s played.
He also reminds me of someone from certain angles. Can’t quite put my finger on it (not sure if it’s in cdrama or KDrama land…and not ZLH btw).

I’m eagerly waiting for them to return to adult life in 2011. Few more eps. The fire arc is building up from end of ep 8

Makes sense. The bikini struck me as weird for MJ’s stuff as well lol. But I love how unphased she was when she tossed it out. Almost like she assumed CY would’ve dated in 6 years. But she was like “sis is back” lol

I agree with you but given this show is 32 eps, I’m ok with sweetness as long as there is progress.

I know this build up explains why their relationship is so layered and complex, especially when they realise that their connection is more than family but transcends into love.

But I’m almost ready for the (fire) angst and separation arc so that we can see the CP in their adult life in 2011 and how that unfolds.
I feel like that won’t happen until ep 10-12, so a good 1/3 of the drama.

Chen Yi’s dad is suspicious that Chen Yi was never his biological son and that his mum cheated. He therefore abuses Chen Yi both physically and through control. The irony is lost because Chen Yi gets the results of the paternity .

I really like the set up of this plot. Humble, imperfect beginnings.
I like that Chen Yi and Miao Jing have that hybrid, nuclear family set up.
It’s relatable and realistic. Chen Yi’s dad is too much with the physical and mental abuse. But that’s reality. There are many terrible parents out there. And honestly I’m sure after he dies, you find out Chen Yi is actually his biological son.

As much as I like actors being rich and looking perfect, when the set up is like this, it’s more three dimensional. #nohateLinYuSen lol

FOE was a phenomenal drama - so glad to see the cast reunite. Congrats to Moon Chae Won and her husband! <3

That or clearly he needs money from all the lost endorsements, delays, and lawsuits. After the Phillipines I could imagine Thailand activities next.
One year isn't long. Let’s see how the Korean public respond to his comeback as well. Personally, his controversies are a death sentence to his career, but I do admit that he is a good actor.

Wasn’t there also meant to be a part two of that Disney drama too? I feel bad for his costars and the production team.

Not sure why, perhaps the drama drought but I picked this up again for a second time rewatch. Perhaps missing CZY, and patiently waiting for CD. Not sure if I can relive the PTSD and have my heart broken again. The ending episodes killed me a little inside 🙃🥲🤣

I would encourage you to stick with it. She’s a bit awkward and uncomfortable but it’s part of her character and represents how much she likes Li Zan.

This drama is a slow burn, painful one. If you drop it, I understand, but sticking with it will leave you with something to take away.
