it’s like the producers got two pretty faces for ML & Fl and said, “Yup, that’s all we need.”

That is so funny that you say that. I may not be a fan of Yang Mi, but you have to give credit where credit is…
It's all and good that you are very supportive of Zhao Liying. Kudos to you and to her, but I think this is neither the correct forum or place to be discussing her acting prowess. Perhaps praising her acting skills on her profile page or on her works like the Legend of Shen Li, would be more appropriate. And the same goes for discussing Yang Mi's acting, or lack there of as you so proclaim. You should see their work independent of each other, I'm sure they have their own fans or detractors, but let's just say that each have their own time to peak.

As a side note, liking your own comment does not guarantee that people will agree with you more. Same goes for me, I'm pretty sure that there will be some who will disagree with my stance, and I'm okay with that. This is a public space after all, and I'm all for freedom of speech if I don't infringe the right of others.Peace.

ZHAO LUSI IS A FLOPEVIDENCE:https://koalasplayground.com/2024/12/06/the-story-of-pearl-girl-drops-to-5-8-on-douban-a-week-after-ending-as-industry-views-puts-this-flop-on-zhao-lu-si-as-the-top-billed-female-lead/Evidence…
That is so funny that you say that. I may not be a fan of Yang Mi, but you have to give credit where credit is due. Even the most versatile of actresses like Meryl Streep, Audrey Hepburn etc, have their ups and downs. Not all of their titles are hits. If Lu Si and Yang Mi's acting are so bad in the first place, why are the production houses investing so much money on them, just for them to give them away?? You can say that you don't like this drama, or that so and so was not as great in this drama, etc. but you cannot just blanket erase their previous works, and judge them based on one "flop" or two. If you hate ZLS or YM so much, why even bother commenting on their pages? Isn't it just better to support the dramas and the actors that you DO love/like, than tearing down others, based on some deep-sated hatred?

If you haven't watch this drama, is it fair to say what you said? And if you did indeed watch this drama, you are in your right to form your opinion based on CURRENT drama, but to lambast them for previous dramas that you haven't watched, well, I think you are just shooting at darts just because you feel like it. It's not that I can't accept shoddy works by actors that I do like, in fact, I gave one of ZLS's previous titles, a low score because of how bad it was. They are not perfect, and neither are we. But certainly, if they are failures, we would have not heard of them in the first place. ✌️

I thought this would be one of those decent Noona romances the Japanese are usually adept at producing, but this isn’t the case with this drama. I would say that it was lackluster at best and uninspired at its worst.

First, there was the unconvincing romance between two leads who were more awkward with each other than being comfortable. One has that stiff upper bang, and the other with round fish-eyes who seem to be surprised that some people could be nice because she’s been dealing with lechers at her work place all day, when there’s really only one in particular. Tomoko goes along with the flow, and somehow accepts that this guy Ryohei, who did not seem so interested in getting into her pants, but actually is, but was just not so obvious about it. She could not have fathomed that this guy, who seems to be a “dumb delinquent,” could actually be harmless.

Then suddenly, Ryohei appears everywhere she is, from meeting her friends to meeting her parents. And even claiming to be so-called “friends” with the guy who had been trying to date Tomoko? That was really a stretch for me, especially when he did not even have the decency to leave when Koki was trying to have a personal conversation with his grandmother. Isn’t he just being nosy or oblivious? Then the revelation that came out of the left field, as if the writers could not come up with a convincing excuse to write him out of the love equation.

Anyway, I thought the drama could have been better with more developed characters and conflicts, but I understand it may have been limited by time and length. They could have just focused on one or two issues instead of trying to tackle so many things in one already-short show. It’s like trying to make a salad with 10 different things but not mixing it well. I’m pretty sure 3 or 4 ingredients would have been enough, and the same applies here.

On My Uncanny Destiny Dec 7, 2024
Perhaps if I hadn’t watched Mr. Queen, I would have given this drama a higher rating. I’m not saying these dramas are related, but this drama gave me the same vibe. Both dramas feature strong female leads as rulers of their kingdom, both had gender-bending or swapping as themes, and both have comedic elements. Basically, this drama is like a cross between Mr. Queen and The King’s Affection.

While I was impressed with both aforementioned titles, My Uncanny Destiny perhaps has a less intricate plot and less developed secondary characters. I would say that though the comedic timing of the show is on–point, I believe this is due to the lead actress’ delivery and performance. Zhang Yue Nan’s solid portrayal as the formidable Lord of Mu Xi City is very convincing. This made me enjoy the character more, especially when she switches between Zhao Nan and San Mei, and yet still displays that same wiliness in her demeanor. The amazing dialogue helps a lot too. It looked like the writers sure invested a lot of thought into the FL’s lines that they perhaps forgot everyone else’s.

Although adorable, Yan Zi Xian was disserviced by a FL so strong, that his character paled in comparison. Though he tries to hold on his own, he could not catch up. The rest of the characters were not as memorable as Qi Meng/Hui Rou, and it is for the wrong reasons. She’s just like a nasty bug that wouldn’t die, no matter how many times you try to kill it.

Otherwise, if you have time for some light drama, this may be a decent show to watch.

I didn’t expect to enjoy this drama, but I did. I’m a sucker for friends-to-lovers, with a sprinkling of slow-burn, so I’m as good as dead.

For starters, I’m rooting for a main character who is not your typical “hot Oppa“ lead, without needing to subscribe to beauty standards in order to be “accepted” by society. I find Tubby Kang so much more adorable before he lost weight because he was truer to himself and less conscious of trying to please others. And his chemistry with the FL before his transformation was palpable.

Jia Wei and Jing Jing was an accidental pairing that neither could have predicted. They were constantly at each other’s throats, but we all know that all this is just play-fighting and nothing serious. Their banter was so fun to watch, but when push comes to shove, they motivate each other to become better people.

Throughout the drama, we see both being oblivious, especially in the beginning, and both were also pinning their hopes on other people. To this end, Gao Zhan and the other Jing Jing become receptacles of the MC’s misplaced feelings. Neither memorable for their acting, nor essential to the plot, except perhaps to give platform to the MC’s stories.

Speaking of the plot, I must say the final episodes did not impress me. It seemed like the writers didn’t know what to do with the material, so they threw a wrench in or two, just to give a conflict that was really petty to begin with. And because of this, these supposedly BFFs became incommunicado for like some years, and you expect me to believe that once they saw each other, all is well in the world? If they wanted to do this prolonged silent treatment as a sub-plot, they must also do a gradual progression on how both came to terms with their feelings, and not just slap a bow with no explanation whatsoever, except for some cringe-inducing finale. This really put a dent on an otherwise good drama.

I am guessing by now you dropped it.
Maybe sometimes, but not true most times. I have dropped close to 100 shows. Usually, I would give it at least 2 or 3 episodes before I decide whether to continue or not, unless I absolutely hated the first episode. There are some dramas where I dropped it and picked it up later, only to enjoy it better the second time around. Perhaps it's due to the mindset or mood at the time of the first viewing that put me off. But picking something up after dropping it , is not something that I do often. It's only because I sometimes take to heart other people's comments like, "it's so good, I can't believe you didn't like it," or "you're missing out when you don't watch this show" that I kind of guilt-tripped myself into watching it again. Very rare do I change on my first impression of a drama. In most cases, if I didn't like it the first time, convincing me otherwise to enjoy it a second time is moot, BUT at least I gave it a second chance. And it really boils down to a subjective opinion.

The only time I would see something through the end is if I reached like more than 3/4 of the show. For example, If there's only 2 episodes left of a 40 episode. I figure, I would have wasted the time I watched the first 38 eps of a drama, only NOT to watch the last 2. But the halfway point is tricky: I usually ask myself, do I justify watching the next half of the show, or quit while I am ahead and not waste time on the other half? I figured that My Lovely Liar warranted the finish.

Actually I managed to finish it. It's not great, it's not bad either. I was more curious than bored so that's a plus.

Actually I am dissatisfied with the fantasy part. A fantasy genre could be logical too. I was waiting for Lun…
Yes, towards the end there, they lost me on that logic, it's like they were trying to weave a wool coat and then didn't know how to tie up the seams.

The reason why Orca has that kind of hairdo is because they can only afford one box of hair dye and Ting Fri already used most of it. They didn't have sponsors like Kopiko or some Thai juice box that they can drink out of every five minutes.
