More than a little aghast that the new JTBC TV series "Snowdrop" is about the tumultuous student protests of the 1980s THAT FEATURES AS ITS MAIN CHARACTER A NORTH KOREAN SPY CHARACTER WHO ONLY PRETENDS TO BE AN ACTIVIST
The reason this is offensive, inappropriate, and FUCKED, is that throughout the 60s-80s, "you're a North Korean spy" was the number one bullshit reason that cops and national security officials used to frame innocent young protesters
Apparently Hot Male Lead number 2 is an "exemplary National Security official"???? EXCUSE ME???? NATIONAL SECURITY OFFICIALS IN THE 1980S WERE NOTORIOUS FOR WATERBOARDING AND MURDERING STUDENT PROTESTERS???????????
The character slated to be played by BLACKPINK's Jisoo? Her name is Yeong-cho. Yeong-cho is not a common woman's name, in fact it is the name of an actual student protester from the 1980s, about whom a fairly famous collection of essays were published in 2017.
Frankly speaking.... the idea that any actor would read a script like this, that 1) portrays National Security officials as "good" or "principled" in any way, and 2) affirms the insanely violent Red Scare propaganda of the 1980s... and then agrees to be in the show? Jesus.
"Yeong-cho Unni" was a collection of essays put out precisely to combat the idea that women only stayed on the sidelines of student protests and bandaged up injured men. Yeong-cho Cheon was a student who intellectually and ideologically mobilizedfellow female students.
Yeong-cho as described by the "Snowdrop" synopsis: "In 1987, Seoul, a college student Su-ho suddenly bursts into the women's dorms covered in blood. College student Yeong-cho hides him and treats his wounds, despite the surveillance, and they fall in love."
