I disagree with the statement “romance is unconsciously just the means to an end”… this is just my interpretation, but to me it seemed that romance was treated an impediment to success. An obstacle to be danced around rather than embraced. Figuratively and literally. Maybe I’m just one of a very few people who has walked away from love to achieve a goal? I feel that there was a lot of allegory/metaphor in this movie: dance style as metaphor for personality, partnered dance as allegory for relationships. Also, there is the competitive aspect… to walk away from love to achieve your goals. I can definitely see how this movie is not satisfying if you are expecting a standard romance plot arc. Because that’s not what this movie is about. There’s a lot of subtext. And it also depends on where you are in life. I’m probably a lot older than you, so I have lived experience with the issues like the ML’s are struggling with. I know you feel that shouldn’t be the case, but film is art, and art is allegory of life. It’s not literal.

The snakes are an important part of the plot in the novel. Everything they have shown regarding the snakes comes from the novel so maybe blame the author? It’s not the production just randomly adding snakes.
