I also like how the setting of the plot is not fantasy or overly ridiculous. The plot develops in a way that’s realistic, with no need for cross dressing, memory lost, magic, or fantasy. although I do like those, it seems many historical dramas have been relying on these tropes to attract viewers

Actually I don’t think this applies to this drama. The person who has the most power in this show is the king and he’s not necessarily bad or evil and he doesn’t attempt to rid the CP of his power either. The CP is definitely afraid of him but he also knows that it’s possible for him to get power if he remains in the king’s good graces. The other “bad” people who are trying to go against the CP also don’t hold absolute power so I like the way they show the power struggle between these people. As for deok Im, I think her foes haven’t fully revealed themselves yet, other than deok ro, she’s quite powerless compared to many people but she’s smart so I’m sure she’d be able to deal with them (or not cos this is a melodrama)
