Jiang Si used a lot the knowledge she got in her 1st life, concerning the use of plants etc.. She's different from the other female lead in rebirth drama because what she wants it's to get peace with her loved one. She doesn't want to get any revenge in the first place, she wants to change ( not being a victim of her fate anymore) that's why she's trying so hard to save her family (and yes, her family struggle didn't caught that much my interest either.
However i understand your opinion concerning the first part of the drama but i think that the political struggle in the palace might have interested you (ep 24). we understand better some "evil" characters because their story are revealed and the chemistry of the protagonists juste increased so much. The quality just incresed since, it's getting better and better !! (you may try to watch the palace arc, from your review i think that you could like it)
