The show started out promising, but unfortunately becomes muddled and exhausting as it chooses to focus on the politics and patriarchy of the time rather than the actual relationship between the ML and FL. It devolves into short drama-coded tropes of the FL getting constantly bullied, physically and verbally abused, and suffering constant hatred and misogyny. Not even Wu Jinyan's acting and Zhao Zhaoyi's infectious energy can save it. I'm happy to see Wu Jinyan back, but also disappointed she got stuck in this dreary show.

The show is so good, it's a shame it was constrained by budget into this micro format. Sometimes the ambition of the show overtakes what it can actually do and the economy of story and resource limitations create some minor leaps of logic and some slightly chaotic character turns which disrupt some of the flow of things. I'm happy for Sherry Kong and hope to see her in more main roles in the future.
Finished ep 14. I'm enjoying this show, but ngl the writing of the ML character is so schizo...I feel like they are just going for vibes with this guy: one minute he's like "I want to be your pawn, go ahead and use me" and then the next minute he turns around and goes, "So what, I'm just a pawn to you? Why are you just using meeee?" She clearly loves him but she always has her mind on the big picture--she has only been in survival mode her entire life. She can't afford to let the love-brained stuff tank all the efforts she made to get this far, especially now when they are as close to their goal as she's ever been. Unfortunately, right now the ML character is just an obstacle distracting and frustrating her instead of working with her and trying to help her get out of this mess. The scenes are cool though--the silk maze into the forced/questionable consent kiss? Great visuals. It's annoying in the context of the story, but still a memorable moment.
ah youku exclusive…a platform i dont sub to sigh. the drama plotline feels vertical drama coded to me, like it was made for that space. also tian xiwei in another math whiz role is interesting, is she IRL good at it?
I love a drama with a strong, composed FL who takes control of her fate. I guess the only thing i have to really suspend my disbelief for is why the scumbag husband leaves her in the first place…the green tea is rarely ever close to being as interesting as the FL. XD
Bailu’s earlier works include modern drama like Arsenal, Love is Sweet and Only for Love, so she is merely returning to the genre. I’ll definitely try to give this one a try. It being a short series too…
I thought she was fine. Is it strange to nitpick her accent/dialect in a fantasy show about supernatural forces? Doesn’t that seem like criticizing the ghosts for not being ghosty enough? idk seems like needless criticism to me but I respect her measured response.
I really wonder why those 7 episodes were cut and if that would've made any difference in people's reactions to the show--it really sounds like they cut too much and made it a mess when it could've been a more promising and memorable series.
i really tried to resist this show knowing how dark and disturbing the novel is. I know the show was rewritten to make it more appealing to a general audience (and censorship of course) but i saw some of the BTS and teasers and it was still unsettling to me but the newest trailer hooked me so i guess i will be giving this a try…
