I remember a conversation about not having a raise for long time.
by growth, I was referring to the drama the big events in her life, like he tried to break up her marriage.

I find irony in the story because MCH is a strong-willed, capable, and tenacious character who doesn't accept help, yet she's gotten some key help in her life (such as her hotel job) along with some good luck. But of course, it is her own determination and intelligence that allows her to succeed once she gets an opportunity. I don't think she ever got a raise in 7 years until YZM showed up - did she? Grandma recognized that MCH needed opportunities and that she has what it takes. I also find it interesting that this story the mother is actually not the person who most influenced her or made the most impact in her life. Her mother was the roadblock in her life. The grandmother was her true support system and soul mate and opened doors for her. The arrival of YZM is what triggered everything in her growth.

I have read other MDL drama pages and I don't see this kind of constant and consistent berating of I hate a particular character but i saw it in WoL, SAF6, and now BCE. I just know it will happen in ABAY too. Sure, I see comments someone doesn't like a character, but this is on a totally different level.

grandma explained it clearly in ep. 3. Zhiming asked her why she doesn't live with that family (Mai family) and she said she married late in life (prob. in her late 50's to early 60's) into that family and then she went on to say that they have a clever daughter who's been a comfort to her all these years, and her name is MCH and will introduce him to her over tea. YZM recalling he had fired her.

I'm still trying to understand YZM said to MCH that "I read grandma's letter, she said for us to work together". I don't see those exact words in the letter. I know from the character; he is not an outright liar. So, I'm assuming he said that based on his interpretation after reading the letter and perhaps thinking about what grandma has said to him in the past, this was his conclusion. btw, thanks for your thoughtful response.

OK I think I get it. 'I'm not trying to make things better" means I'm not trying to help your career. "I'm just trying to make up for regrets" means she regrets that he never had a family. She wishes for him to seek after meaningful things in life.

As MCH said to YZM when they were picking out cheongsam for grandma, "Grandma values quality of life"

YZM: Once you hand over Xing'anli to me, I will manage it with care, and transfer MCH over as a promotion.
GM: Zhiming, does it count as a threat?
YZM: Of course not, I just think this is the best arrangement.

Have Yang Zi fans seen these kinds of collective I hate a character comment in other Yang Zi dramas before on MDL? I haven't seen it on MDL except with recent XK dramas but I'm new to MDL less than a year.

I like this actress. she's fun to watch. the chemistry is going to be amazing. two very charismatic actors with gorgeous faces and youthful look and energy and cute cats.
I hope XK doesn't lose any more weight. His face is so slim now.

when watching with subtitles, sometimes it is difficult to understand the true meaning

in chinese, there are so many ways to refer to someone, one has to know the characters and the formalities, and differences between people from different villages how they refer to people. but in general, what you say is true.

I don't feel grandma is the type to blame YZM for not having visit her for pass 10 yrs given the resentment he was holding, but he been writing to her over the years, so they did keep in touch. I'm not sure what she means by making up for regrets. How exactly is she making it up to him?
I get what she means by I'm not trying to make things better. She isn't. But how does she make up for her regrets to him? By giving him the house?
Also, I don't see where in the letter did grandma entrust MCH and Xing'anli to him? He told MCH that so she would let him help her over the food poisoning fraud. Did he lie to MCH?
In the drama, YZM is portrayed as a character who is actually quite honest when confronted but did he lie to MCH about Xing'anli when she asked if he must have known why grandma gave her the hotel and that he must have wanted to discuss the hotel even before the will.

She entrusted MCH and the hotel to him while she was still alive, she made it clear he had to take care of her, and she did make it clear to him that the hotel staff must be taken care of. but that is not in the letter.

so it was not a regret that directly related to anything grandma did to him, right? I know YZM said when he was young, he was mad at grandma for not helping his family until things got really bad. Also, when his mom died, he was prob. still around 9, he was left on his own, maybe Grandma regrets she could not send for him? thanks for your thoughtful response.

Grandma's letter is very brief. She did not mention that she chose MCH because she has the same values as herself.
Later, when guest complained about Xing'anli food poisoning, MCH wouldn't let YZM help her until he said that he had read grandma's letter and she said they should work together, but I don't see any mention of it. Was he lying to her? YZM has never lied in the drama, has he? not a direct lie. seems when confronted, he told the truth, no?

Grandma's letter to YZM:
Zhiming. I think you must be surprised at my arrangement. You will think I am biased. In fact, to me, you are equally important. Chenghuan is diligent and aspiring, yet she always lacks an opportunity to prove herself. I never worry about your career, but you have been abroad since you were young. You have experienced the fickleness of the world. I'm sorry that we did not have much time for each other, and I'm not attentive enough to you. Therefore, I chose to hand over the management of Xing'anli to Chenhuan and left the old house to you. I'm not trying to make things even better. I just want to make up for regrets. I hope that you won't live like a rootless duckweed always trying to seek advantages and avoid disadvantages. You should know that the human touch matters most between people. How does MCH know what YZM know or not know?
So did YZM assume he would get the hotel and since he had promise grandma that he would involve MCH, he invited her to dinner to discuss it? But YZM hadn't read grandma's letter at this point. What makes her think that he knows everything or is she just always distrust him?
Did YZM lie to her?

MCH: "Have you ever thought about why grandma entrusted Xing'anli to me?
YZM: I have thought about it. I don't know.
MCH: That day at the cemetery, you invited me to dinner, is it related to Xing'anli?
YZM: No
MCH: It seems you still cannot be honest with me.
