Xu Kai’s acting is so nuanced that people often underestimate him. When he plays those quieter, more reserved characters, the quality of his performance becomes harder to detect. Anyone who isn’t paying close attention to the character’s psychology ends up missing the depth he’s actually delivering. Also, idol dramas are more into visuals and don’t really give the actor the chance to act as much. I do agree — the raw, intense emotional train wreck he has to portray in Eight Hundred takes an enormous amount of skill and emotional stamina, the kind he hasn’t really had to tap into before, and roles like this are rare to find, if not for this director.

Meng Ting Hui and Shen Zhi Li were in Royal Feast together. I do like Yin Qin. He plays a silly guy, but he never actually comes across as silly. He has a stage presence you don’t often find in supporting characters, because those roles aren’t meant to stand out — but he makes his character stand out.

That’s my point. I realize now that reservations are manufactured and don’t reveal true demand for the drama. They’re the equivalent of hype — it can help a drama initially, but a drama that doesn’t have this hype doesn’t mean there is no demand. It’s really misleading to think that. People mistake visibility for interest, and those are not the same thing. Now I realize how little impact this boycott thing has, too. It's just noise.
