Visual of Shadows

Veil of Shadows was a highly anticipated Chinese idol drama in 2026, so it's no wonder it got the second-highest viewership while airing. However, can the actors and visuals of the show actually make a drama good?

The drama started off strong, with all characters beautifully colliding in the first episode to dive into the first of four arcs in the show. Character introductions were clean without spoiling their importance in the story. It was a well-rounded first arc that left the viewer curious to see the next one. Then the second arc came, and we started with my biggest problem of the show — overusing "plot twists" as often as they possibly could. Since the pacing of the show is rather fast, it left most of the viewers confused, as every day 90% of the comments in the comment section were questions out of confusion.

Let's get to the characters. Beautifully clothed and pampered with stunning makeup — the leads took everyone's breath away and brought high traffic to the drama. The acting was done well for the most part, and they performed great with the material they got.
However, the writing was the problem. The characters Wu Wang Yan and Wu Shi Guang were solely used as plot devices instead of adding anything to the story. Most of the time, I forgot they exist because they have no character development whatsoever, while side characters got a completely different treatment in their arc. Focusing and deep-diving into the side characters is a trademark of the director; however, that shouldn't reduce main characters to NPCs. Lu Wu Yi and Ji Ling didn't get that much of a better treatment either, with their romance being a fast-paced "slow burn" type of love with many misunderstandings due to the plot twists that were thrown around like letters in a spelling competition. My next issue is the time travel. Time travel and time loops are concepts that are very hard to do right. And they weren't done right in this either. It felt like they were just randomly added to add more plot twists and to randomly boost a character's power, which created illogical story progression.

With all that being said, it wasn't a bad drama. It was actually a decent one, which is very watchable. If you watch dramas mainly for the visuals, then you will love this drama. The music in this drama was also very beautiful and is worth listening to.

Archives: The Nanyang Misery

Archives: The Nanyang Mystery is one of the Daomu Biji/ Grave Robbers stories which follows the usual characteristics of bromance, action and fantasy of the author. But what does it bring to the table as drama?

The drama starts of with fast pace and quick story progression. However the pace slows down significantly after a few episodes. Since then the pacing keeps wavering into slow and fast pace sections.
The character of Hai Lou starts of as carefree, reckless and hot-headed. He does whatever he pleases without repercussion since his brother Hai Xia - the calm, smart and logical one - always cleans up his mess. His master Hai Qi sends him off to a place where no agent has returned from alive. Hai Xia goes against their masters wishes and follows him to once again be his shield. After seemingly loosing his brother Hai Lous character development begins and he has to learn to take responsiblity for his actions by himself. After Hai Xia is revived from the death he slowing turns evil against his will. The struggle of Hai Xia fighting against himself and Hai Lou having to learn to work alone while worrying about Hai Xia gets harder each episode until Hai Xia can't fight against himself anymore and Hai Lou has to kill him which ends his character arc and their brotherhood after a long struggle.
While Hai Qi shows that she cares for Hai Xia countless times she seems to lacks the same level of feelings for Hai Lou as we saw her sending him off to his possible dead with no hesistation, not helping him on the ship until Hai Xia was involved and in more scenes. However she still supports him and lays down all the things she had hidden from him all these years to keep the archives running. Hai Lou should not rely on anyone but himself and she makes that clear.

While having a good storyline to follow something went wrong. We got a glimpse into Hai Xias and Hai Lous relationship at the start of the drama however we didn't get to see nearly as much as we needed to until things fell apart. Also the villains all were comically but depending on the person watching this could either be good or bad. Whatever floats your boat.
The MLs played their parts good but the overuse of face shots got repetitive after a while. Ding Yuxis facial expressions went viral a time ago and it seemed like they are trying to get these viral moments again. The FLs acting was lacking in a lot of scenes but was good enough. The story fell a bit flat especially at the end and made no sense at times which had me wondering if they wanted to go to a diffent storyline but changed it post filming.
They really wanted to make a sad drama and they did.

Overall a good DML drama which shines in action, fighting scenes and atmosphere.

Nintendo presents: PitBabe Kart

Honestly this season was a major letdown. I didn't expect too much anyway but at least the same quality as season one would have been nice.
The story felt mediocre at best — it dragged with a slow pace at times, lacked focus, and gave the impression of unfinished or abandoned storylines. Like Kenta and Kim? They did all that for nothing? And Winner didn't even got an ending?
There were too many couples going on in such a short time, which meant none of them got the proper screentime or development they deserved. It all built up to a bad ending for all of them which left me unsatisfied.
Overall, it felt like the writers didn't knew how to properly end the series.

Speaking of characters, their portrayal was just as frustrating. Most of them barely had any screentime, making it hard to connect with or care about their arcs. Like in season one, there were unnecessary NSFW (and SA!!) scenes that added nothing to the story. But that's personal preference.
Kenta’s character especially suffered — he acted reckless the entire season, even though he was more careful and self-aware last season. It made no sense to me.

However I also have nice things to say. The acting by the cast was very good and I really enjoyed Kims character yet again despite him having such little screentime. Winners perfomance this season and character arc was also very strong.
The music in season one really bothered me but they got it right this time. It was way more watchable.

Overall, Pit Babe had potential, but this season felt rushed, disjointed, and careless — both narratively and in terms of character development but still had some good aspects.
