I was originally going to pass on Blossoms of Power because, at first glance, it looked like just another transmigration/revenge drama and honestly, we've had a lot of those in the past year. I wasn't really in the mood for another one. But I'm glad I gave this a chance because it ended up being a lot more enjoyable than I expected.
The best part of this drama for me was definitely Shen Xi He and Xiao Hua Yong. I really liked that neither of them was the typical helpless lead waiting for the other to save them. They're both smart, cautious, and constantly trying to figure out what the other person is hiding. In the beginning, they're basically testing each other every chance they get, and I really enjoyed watching that dynamic slowly change. Their relationship goes from political alliance to mutual suspicion to cooperation to trust to love, and it felt pretty natural.
What I especially loved was that Shen Xi He doesn't become weaker just because she falls in love. She remains intelligent, ruthless when necessary, and capable of handling herself. Xiao Hua Yong doesn't need her to become some soft, obedient wife. Instead, they eventually become true partners who protect each other.
And Xiao Hua Yong? He Yu was such a pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting to like him as much as I did. His whole "weak and sickly Crown Prince" act could have gotten annoying, but He Yu made him funny, mischievous, calculating, and vulnerable all at once. Watching him go from political mastermind to completely whipped husband was honestly hilarious. He was DOWN BAD for Shen Xi He so quick lol.
I also have to mention Bu Shu Lin, because she almost outshined the main leads for me. Whenever she showed up, she brought so much energy to the story. I really enjoyed her personality, her storyline, and especially her relationship with Cui Jin Bai. There were definitely times when I was more excited to see what Bu Shu Lin was going to get herself into than whatever political scheme was happening with the main couple. Her character was just really fun to watch, and I wish the drama had given her even more to do.
My biggest complaint is definitely the pacing, and it's a little complicated because I didn't think the drama was boring. If anything, sometimes it was the complete opposite. The first 10 or so episodes were probably the best paced for me. We had time to understand Shen Xi He, her situation, and her relationship with Xiao Hua Yong. We got to watch them slowly test and figure each other out instead of immediately becoming a lovey-dovey couple. Their little mind games were probably some of my favorite parts. But once the political storyline really gets going, things start moving really fast. There are so many schemes, betrayals, secrets, political factions, and reveals that sometimes I was sitting there thinking, "Wait... when did we get here?"
And that's the problem. It's not that the story was lacking content. There was almost too much content. For example, the drama would introduce a complicated political situation, have Shen Xi He or Xiao Hua Yong come up with some brilliant counter-plan, and then suddenly the plan is already working or the conflict is resolved. I wanted to actually watch them execute these plans. We're constantly told how smart these two are, but sometimes I wanted more time to see them actually outsmart everyone. The later episodes were even more rushed. Major betrayals, deaths, political changes, and emotional moments were happening one after another, but the story rarely stopped long enough to let the characters or us process what just happened.
The biggest example for me was Xiao Hua Yong's apparent death. That should have been one of the biggest emotional moments of the entire drama. Shen Xi He's reaction was heartbreaking because this woman who is normally so controlled completely falls apart. But then the story has to move on so quickly because there are still so many other things to resolve. And then his eventual return felt rushed too. I didn't necessarily want fewer plot points. I wanted more time between them. The drama probably could have benefited from a few more episodes, especially toward the end. There were some storylines I would have happily cut or shortened if it meant giving the important emotional and political moments more room to breathe.
That said, the fast pacing does have one advantage: the drama rarely gets boring. There's always another secret, scheme, betrayal, or twist waiting around the corner. So even when I was complaining about the pacing, I was still watching the next episode.
Final Thoughts
Overall, this ended up being a pleasant surprise for me. I went in expecting another transmigration/revenge drama, the kind we've gotten quite a few of past year and ended up staying because of the characters and especially the main couple.
It's definitely not perfect. The political plot can get confusing, the pacing becomes rushed, and the ending needed more time. But the chemistry between Shen Xi He and Xiao Hua Yong, the humor, the supporting cast, and the overall entertainment value made it worth watching for me. And honestly, Bu Shu Lin nearly stole the whole show.
