It is a modern adult comedy wrapped in an historical legend, and a stageplay wrapped in a screenplay. The scenes are presented like a stage play, complete with musical numbers and solo dances. The actors are fantastic but the stageplay presentation style may seem 'overdone' on the small screen. Viewers familiar with theater (or even Bollywood movies) will understand and appreciate the theatrical presentation, which adds an otherworldly quality befitting of a legendary tale.
The comedy is laugh-out-loud funny, perfectly over the top and delightfully ridiculous. Lots of in-your-face adult humor but it is delivered well with perfect timing - never seeming trashy or juvenile.
The heart-warming moments are a bit lukewarm, unfortunately. We understand what they 'getting at' but it always falls just short of its goal. This minor problem leaves an obvious hole in the film, which probably explains its poor reception.
