I agree with you 1000%: if you think machismo is the same thing as being a psychopath, you have lived a sheltered life. People who routinely assault people and are in and out of jail are not "macho guys."
Liu Zi's acting was phenomenal. She stole every scene she was in, stole the whole show really. Although this drama has the usual creepy, chilling, Chinese fascist vibe, the script itself is extremely nuanced with great complexity to all the characters, including all the "bad guys." That made it very refreshing and one of the rare dramas that is worth watching for 16 hours.

The epilogue was typical Chinese censorship: in China nobody is allowed to get away with crime on the screen, so they had to say in the end credits that Su Lin got a slap on the wrist for her vigilantism. It would be comical if it wasn't so dystopian that China is like this. Famously they made sure that Tyler Durden didn't get away with it in Fight Club in exactly the same way. The shot of the killer strapped into one of those chairs that they use for torture interrogation of political prisoners was really chilling.

Guys who get in fist fights like this can go have their emotions in a jail cell or better yet some kind of concentration camp for psychopaths as far as I'm concerned. The fights you see in the classroom scenes in this show are Assault punishable by 2 years in prison in Japan, but of course Netflix has the lawyers to get away with packaging this as entertainment.
The problems we have in this world are because men like that exist and women have sex with them and make little psychopaths. This show scrapes the absolute worst elements of Japan out of the gutter to show the world.
This was truly tough to watch. You know these people had hard lives, but it's impossible to avoid the conclusion that some of them are really terrible people in their actions and they are grown-*** adults that are not going to change. Grown men and women having fistfights and seducing people just for the feeling of power while talking nonsense about marriage. I would not want to run into any of these people in a bar in Tokyo, and there will be no fairytale endings coming out of this - it's just human pulp in the meatgrinder for our entertainment.
Reality shows are getting really sophisticated at covering their tracks and making sure to "support" the cast so that there are no controversial, negative, or tragic outcomes afterward. But they are just as exploitive as they have been for the past 30 years.

I respectfully disagree with you on that one. I didn't give this one a rating, only watched half of the first episode, but in that short time it had two sequences with AI. The problem is that once they have access to cheap AI visual effects, producers start using it "sloppily" -- pun intended. The gag with the centipede was an actual plot beat that they included just because they can. Like, 'let's have aliens land and blow up Tokyo, why not? The effects are free.' So in that way, the AI starts having an obvious deleterious effect on the writing. And drama watchers are here for the writing. Like I said below, once you start allowing AI in your kdramas, you're on the slop slippery slope.
I was not so impressed with this drama that I'm going to see it all the way through to make a point, or as someone suggested below, watch the BTS footage to parse out what's AI and what's not. There are enough old good dramas and movies that I haven't seen that I literally don't need them to keep making new ones (with or without AI) to keep me busy for the rest of my life.

Ai is just a way of easily dialing up generic CGI, so the main tell (aside from the disclaimer at the top of the episode) is that it's so cheap that they rely on it too much. Like the cheesy centipede gag.

This drama is a treat better than a banana split. Starts off slow in the first episode, but quickly revs up the lols and the feels. Brilliant writing and Sakura Ando is absolutely perfect for the lead; all the kid actors do great too. Ando is the undisputed world champion of giving people weird judgmental looks without saying anything, but you can tell exactly what she's thinking. The Queen of Stinkeye.
The plot is a super clever twist on the "time travel" trope with hilarious dialog. It's a Japanese "Groundhog Day," worthy of the comparison. I was hooked from the "Go To Hell" hoodie -- it's funny to think about whether the writer actually saw that shirt and it's the inspiration for the whole drama. ๐ค Great Japanese shows are rare, but when they're good, they're great. I will probably watch the whole thing again from the beginning when it's over. 10/10
