The main character’s villainy is also very believable and tragic - unlike the Bad Kids version where it was difficult to empathise with the perpetrators. In 800 meters the main leads are not true villains. You want them to win. The story is understated, it’s real and it’s gripping. It’s supposed to be a suspense and crime thriller. But the delicate vulnerable love story quietly weaving its way in the midst of all the chaos is a beautiful thing. Like a wine desperately trying to find a footing and grow in the dark harsh environs of the coal mines in the town that are at the centre of the story. In 800 meters they are not bad kids. Just kids caught in the midst of circumstances beyond their control and driving them to the extreme. Xu Kai shines brilliantly in this exceptional offering. Proving his powerhouse talent and ability to emote in the most complex roles. Highly recommended- the best drama of this year.
