Shirakata Susumu grew up at Eifukuji Temple. He returns home to the temple after being ordained as monk, but works at a local bookstore. Upon the death of his grandfather Zuien, the temple's head monk, the 24-year-old Susumu takes the name of Koen and becomes the chief monk. But, he discovers that being a monk is much more profound than he'd imagined.
