Heartbreaking Story

This drama been in watch list for some time, but as chinese drama usually come with many episodes, I just need time to prepare, because I don't like being disturbed when watching. From the first episode really capture my heart, beautiful scenery also the story somehow promising. Yet I find myself deeply intach with this drama for few days, apart from clichè scenes, the rest are good although there're a lot of politic conflict story more than the love relation story. Slowly I just mesmerized with the actor and actress acting, they're so good to potrait the emotion especially couple last episodes, thats just heart breaking, I cry a lot and can't move on from this drama, no wonder this was recommended drama back on 2019. Not missing the ost too, only 3 songs but deep meaning and complete this drama. Maybe I'll rewatch it again for the director's cut, dunno when but will.

Excellent Heartbreaking Drama

I just watched this goodbye my princess drama (2019) in 2024. This is very late.
Because I mostly watched happy ending romance drama and crime thriller drama series.
The story, plots, acting are excellent.
The story is itself strong, solid and deep!!
I still can’t move on from this drama.
Both main lead actor and actress are really deep and excellent in acting.
I prefer actor’s acting skills. He can show detail acting with eyes , control facial expressions, changing his acting within seconds when plot of drama was needed.
This is really really heartbreaking, heart wrenching, heartfelt.
Although actor character is red flag, he has own reason to do those cruel things.
I feel sorry for both actor and actress characters.
💔💔💔😭😭😭😭
Best Heartbreaking Drama

My Roman Empire.

Li Chengyin and Xiaofeng’s love story was doomed since the beginning. Every happy moment was followed by slaughter and despair. They kept falling in love with each other despite everything till hating themselves. Their story is truly the most painful.

Both actors did great in their roles, especially the FL: i felt every emotion she wanted to convey. It must have been so difficult for them to shoot some scenes and they truly did great.

It’s the most angsty drama I’ve ever watched because there was no salvation for their love story. It’s powerful because it moves you and it’ll keep lingering in your mind for days.. They made it impossible to forget.

Be emotionally equipped.

I love the chemistry—the acting is on point, the portrayal is brilliant, the costumes are stunning, the cinematography is excellent, and the OSTs are phenomenal. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Everything is perfect… except for their love story. It’s terrible!!!! It may not be healthy, but it does make sense. It’s believable enough. Thank goodness I did my research before watching! I had to mentally and emotionally prepare myself for nearly two years—and even then, it still took me quite a long while to move on after finishing it during the pandemic! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 ..can never be emotionally equipped for this. 🤭🤦🏻‍♀️🤭🤦🏻‍♀️

I pray I never find this kind of love story in real life. 😭🙏🏻😭🙏🏻

Started out good, then dragged

The storyline is a good foundation for a great drama/tragedy. The first half was good, then it just dragged on repetitively for the remaining half. The series would've been great if they just ended it sooner. Midway thru the series, the scenes just kept repeating over and over. How many times can a Crown Princess Consort sneak out of the Imperial palace, get into mischief and get saved by her creepy stalker. This type of tragic love story should leave you with lingering emotions after watching it. That did not happen for me.

Acting/Cast:
- ML was just ok, nothing great, nothing terrible. One weird thing that I couldn't get past was his hands...his fingers are freakishly long and bony. Every time I saw his hands I was distracted in a bad way.
- FL was good. She was adorable. But the character was a bit cliche.
- 2nd ML (Gu Jiao) - the FL's teacher/first love - he was probably one of the most annoying characters. He came across as a creepy stalker. And how unrealistic that he stood in the tree overlooking her room in the palace every night. If she can see him...can't the palace guards?! He's always wearing white clothing...standing straight upright on a tree branch in a tree w/ barely any leaves/foliage.
- Prime Minister/Imperial Material Uncle - my god he was annoying, I skipped every scene that he was in. Not sure if it was the dubbing of the voice, but it was like being put to sleep when he was on screen
- Support characters, and the ONLY likeable characters were A Du and Pei Zhao. Loyal and conflicted conscience. But it also irked me that they did not speak up to reveal the injustices, atrocities, misunderstandings.

Pros:
- Cinematography and production quality were great
- Music was beautiful
- Good storyline potential

Cons:
- Dragged on way too long, many repetitive scenes/topics
- No real likeable characters other than the Xiao Feng, A Du and Pei Zhao
- The main couple lacked chemistry. Their intense love when they were in Dachi, just didn't make sense to me. And I still don't understand how they fell in love again in the palace after losing their memories. He was so cruel to her, constantly humiliating & degrading her in front of others - so how could she fall in love with him?

Overall it had potential, but fell flat. Won't be re-watching it.

As heart-breaking as it can get...I still cry

After a long time now, I am able to write a rational review on this epic drama. No wait... it still gets me... it is the most-heart breaking drama I have watched so far and that still makes me tear up.
Let us start by the beautiful cinematography and production. The landscapes are really amazing and shots really create and enhance the mood of the scenes...
The story is gripping in all its sense, the politics parts relating to the Gao Family, the connivence of the Prince and the Emperor, the journey of the FL...
The OST is just amazingly good... I still listen to it. They really elevate the scenes.
Finally, there is stellar performance of the entire cast, especially of Peng Xiao Ran. She was really good at portraying this young teenage girl who is free-spirited, naughty, naive and sincere in her relationships with her parents, teacher, friend and love of her life. Then, when she goes to Beijing, she slowly transforms into this sad, homesick, crown princess who refuses to be calculating or to play politics. As she starts to mature, she slowly realises that she needs to take a day at a time and seeks distraction in the only bar, a refuge from her dailylife burden. She feels that something is amiss and that that sense of loving or of being loved constantly eludes her. Then, when she discovers the truth, she realises that after all the love, betrayals, politics, she must really rise up to being the princess to her beloved Si Zhou.

IT IS THE MOST HEART-BREAKING DRAMA.

This serial will forever remain very special to me because even now, I feel like crying when I watch any scene. Despite a lot of editing of the serial and quite bad subtitles, the rendition of the cast, especially that of the FL just wrung my heart and my eyes. The FL's performance was exceptional in exploring a naive girl's heart and hope, her discovery of betrayal and the immense pain it brought to her, her sense of doubt and hope for the crown prince's love and rather numb emotions after her friends were killed, when she understood and gave up on her love and finally, when she dedicated herself and her life to her beloved Sizhou. The ML rational mind and steady efforts towards power is also amazing. The SML's regret and melancholy when he realised that he had forever lost her love due to his betrayal, his attempt to redeem himself, his hope that maybe she will start to love him again. The other negative characters' parts in drawing emotions and in elevating the whole story all contributed to making this series painfully addictive. The director's role in staying true to the mood of each part of the serial is just mind-blowing. Honestly, I will forever love this Tv serial.

A Dark and Emotionally Heavy Story with a Divisive Journey

I found this storyline very difficult to sit through due to its heavy tone. The central relationship is portrayed in a deeply toxic dynamic, and much of the narrative focuses on emotional strain, manipulation, and the destructive consequences of the lead’s single-minded pursuit of revenge. Across its lengthy run, the story leans heavily into themes of suffering, moral collapse, and the impact of unresolved trauma on both the characters and those around them.

I also explored the original novel, hoping for a different or more redemptive direction, but found it similarly bleak, so I ultimately stopped before finishing it. The adaptation does include additional material that continues the story into a more modern setting, offering a sense of closure and resolution. However, the journey leading up to that point is emotionally exhausting, which can make the final outcome feel more bittersweet than uplifting.

Bring back my sanity Xiao2x couple ??

I fell in love with the two main characters ,I can't move on.their great portrayals put me on edge. The acting is superb, the beautiful scenery and the crazy story put in awe.
But the ending broke me.I was broken.I lost my mind,I lost my appetite,I had gone insane,I don't know what to do with my life anymore....

This drama affected me so much...I incurred real pain. A self-inflicted suffering in myself.

I pinched my heart with every painful scene and my heart jumped with excitement and laughter when the two leads were happy.Their happy voices echoed in my mind,I told you they robbed my sanity.

I am someone who doesn't get easily attached but this, I invested my time, my tears and enjoyed every "beautiful scene" and most of all the lessons that I got for every character are something that I burried deep inside my heart. To say it is best is not enough. The change of the characters of Xiao Wu and Xiao Feng, how their facial expressions changed from happy to gloomy, how their voices changed from funny to serious. woahhh I love them. They are more than best, the way they carry their characters not to mention their incredible dashing faces.
The drama:
depicted the reality, a messy decision making, a hunger for power, a weakness of the heart. You could see in this drama, that women are tools of men, the young ones are the tools of the old ones and the old ones are the slave of revenge. Though the ending is sad, it should be the ending though I want Xiao Feng to see happy with the man she loved, but it didn't happen but then again the ending should be like this. I remember the episode where Xiao Wu joined his army and killed Xiao Feng's grandfather matched with the episode when Xiao Feng sacrificed herself. The weight of their pain could only be balanced by the last episode. The loss of life of Xiao Feng killed Xiao Wu..There are two things that died on the last episode.Xiao Feng's sufferings and Xiao Wu's heart. Xiao Wu killed Xiao Feng roots, her family and expected Xiao Feng to continue her life without her roots, it is obvious it is hard to lead your life without roots especially when the one who cut it is the man you loved. But I hate the scene when the female lead character killed herself,I mean why? Why author? Why?😤
lessons:
I have already written long enough I am afraid I can't stop...hehe.. So much in my mind but I only give two.Not all cultures can be preserved especially when it is toxic and detrimental.LOVE is powerful if you use it as a weapon instead of seeing it as a weakness.

When I love a drama,I watch it many times, but this drama I couldn't dare to watch it again. But the irony of it,despite the fact that I watched it once,it pained me to say that all the remarkable scenes still engraved in my memory. Yes,it feels like I had watched it many times.
Would I recommend this? Nah,it depends on how strong your heart is. It is poison, but it was something that I didn't regret on drinking and until now I couldn't find the antidote...🤦

Drama worth a rewatch

This drama has a lot of depth to it and good flashbacks. Although the story did not end on a good note, if that's the way the story was written they had to follow the author's work. The acting of the main leads was phenomenal. They had good chemistry together. They displayed in-depth emotions and made you feel the anguish, pain, and suffering they were experiencing. Their delivery of the humourous parts was also good. I liked the wardrobes especially the collars of the wardrobes. It looks like a lot of money was spent on building the sets and on locations. Peng Xiaoran is one of my two favorite actresses. She's very pretty and makes her ML look good. She tends to favor costume dramas and I hope to see her in a modern drama.

BEST CDRAMA!!!

Watched this a few years agooo. GMP is by faaaaaar the best and my favourite cdrama so far! No other cdramas can replace this one.
I cried a river after finishing it for the first time. Got depressed for maybe a week from the aftermath of watching the ending. Then I keep rewatching it and the aftermath is still the same!!!
Very good cinematography and makeup!

The acting is WOW! Superb superb, even if you see the BTS you can tell they are really into their characters, can't stop crying even after cut, especially the male lead. PXR on the other hand is an amazing amazing actress, she naturally draws us in with her acting! PXR is my favourite Chinese actress. I’m always looking forward to her new dramas. But unfortunately this is the best drama she is in so far, I hope she gets better projects soon TT

this drama should be imagine however it turn out to be boring from first episode. if you like to invest the time to watch. you should skip episode 1-9 and 49 to 52. so you will get good result. this is boring indeed. if it compare to other drama. it's really less action scenes. less thought. less romance. less meaning. it's just a triple love. the teacher become behind door lover and that's all for this drama. nothing more. if you expect wonderful from this drama. you should be.
everyone has different ideal. this food. it's quite good taste for me. unlike the first start ever night. i was freak out how wonderful it is. imaging from the start.

Promising Premise, No Substance: A Letdown in Every Way

This is probably the second series I’ve ever rated so low. The first thing that caught my eye was the poster—it’s absolutely gorgeous and very engaging for new viewers. Based on the premise, I expected a great balance between romance and court diplomacy, but the high rating (above 8) feels misleading. I’ve seen far better Chinese dramas rated much lower, so I’m not sure if the romance alone is why people scored it so highly.

The production quality is disappointing. The costumes are barely decent, the sets look cheap, and even the makeup is poorly done. However, the biggest issue is the acting—whether it’s the capricious princess, her enamored master, or the prince, none of the performances feel convincing. One moment that really sealed my decision to drop the drama was when the prince suddenly learned how his mother died—it was so random and poorly executed that I knew things would only go downhill from there. The dialogues are weak, and the characters feel superficial and caricatured.

For a 2019 drama, it looks like something shot in the early 2000s, and not in a good way. The only thing I genuinely liked was the natural landscapes, particularly the desert scenes. I wish I had more positive things to say, but I couldn’t even get past episode five—it was that bad for me. That said, those who are deeply invested in romance and can overlook everything else might still enjoy it.
