"Love at least" had stro ng performances but weak story line.

The leading lady, first of all, was astonishing good in this one. She portrayed her character to the point of perfection and she was emotional enough and tragic as well. Her partner was good too, but he was overshadowed by her.

On the other had, the plot was weak. Even though the actual story dealt with strong themes, the final plot focused more on the leading lady and less on what was actually going on and her interaction with her boyfriend.

So, overall, six out of ten.

生きてるだけで、愛 (Love At Least) is a film based on the novel by Yukiko Motoya. It's about a girl name Yasuko who is a hikkimori (reclusive adolescents or adults who withdraw from society and seek degrees of isolation) and has hypersomnia (trouble staying awake during the day), Yukiko feels frustrates as she can't control her emotions and a boy name Tsunagi who works in the editorial department but feels like he's nowhere near his actual passion. Two individuals who happen to be together in the night, running towards the complexity of life and the small bits of joy from being in love.

This film is about a person who struggles with depression and how they deal with life. Shuri's performance was spectacular in this film, portraying the complexity of a person with manic depression who wants to withdraw from society. Suda Masaki as the boyfriend who portrays a neutral yet emotionally intact with the character was good. Honestly, Suda Masaki on indie films is great too. He balances it portraying his characters from mainstream to indie.
Shuri and Suda Masaki in one film was a treat as they both connected with their emotions portraying their characters. I love them.

The cinematography also plays well with the story, correlating them with the character's scenes and interactions. That last part reminds me of Burning by Lee Chang-Dong where the female character dances her way to the waves of emotions while being in trance.

I guess there's few films who get a story of depression but this film gets it, hits you to the core.

Powerful

* This movie may be triggering for people who either suffer from depression or have family members with depression.

My father has suffered from depression my entire life, and some parts of this film reminds me of what he was like 20 years ago, insomnia, sleeping through the day, irrational bouts of anger, inability to hold down a job. He had to make the decision that he would get better for himself and his family and he took those steps to make that decision a reality. That included medication, something which we never see happening in this film, but probably should have happened.

The plot isn't weak. It focuses on the story of the FL's depression, not on her relationships. This is how she sees the world. She is incapable of intimacy until the very end of the story. Until the ending, the ML and FL were not intimately aware of each other's emotions because they couldn't be. It was beyond her to share that part of herself and he was incapable of pushing through to find her. We get that much from the film, nothing more is really needed.

I appreciated the ending. I feel like they'll make it.

Suda Masaki is a powerful and intense actor. He is well suited to these types of roles where that intensity can just shine. Shuri also impressed me since she convinced me she suffers from depression. With my family history, I know what it looks like, and this was it.

Will I rewatch? Probably not. It didn't trigger me, necessarily, but it's not a joyful film, despite the hope of the ending. I am glad I watched it though and I'm glad to see films like this being made because it shows depression for the debilitating illness it is.
