The setting of the drama is in Kure, a naval city in Hiroshima province. The story told about Suzu's and her new family life during the harsh time of WWII. (it touch a little bit about the Atomic bombing at Hiroshima). It was very interesting to see how the Japanese lived and what they felt during the war. Personally, I was born from a country which was used to be occupied by the Japanese. The textbook only taught about one side view of the war. Being the oppressed or the occupier. It was interesting to see it from the other side of the view and learn that no one wants to go to war and war really does not benefit anybody (the one who starts always is the person from the above not the people).
I'm not very familiar with the casts. But they sure did a wonderful job. The act feels really natural and the story is not being forced at all. I can say very confidently that even if you read the manga, you won't be disappointed or being bored with this drama.

この世界の片隅に is filmed in my hometown in Hiroshima-Kure ♥ This drama is about Urano Suzu who lives with her family and her parents want to get her married. So they introduce her to Hojo family who she met when she was little...She lives in Eba where she grew up and after her marriage she moved to Kure in Hiroshima in the middle of the pacific war. Supplies are short, and family and friends get sent to the battlefield...Suzu and the Hojo family battle such anxieties as they try to live positively. They try to make a child but they end up adopting one from the war which ended.This drama is adapted from the manga which I read recently and fell in love with everything in it. It was simply a masterpiece and not only because it's based in my hometown but also because I really love how the ancient people lived at the past. I would give everything for his world to return back to that time where everyone was so honest and everything was more simple ♥ ♥♥

This is a beautiful story that tells what people were before, during and after war, what they went through and what happened with the Hiroshima bomb focused of Suzu’s family and neighbors. The acting, the writing, the soundtrack, the way it was directed everything is beautiful and well done! I recommend it, please give it a try, maybe the first episodes are slow but it goes smoothly with many interesting things happening until the end!I give this 10/10
I would also like to add that every character is well written and acted!

Condensed and fast paced, but I wanted more storytelling
Completed - 7/18/2022After watching so many dramas about Japanese occupation in China and South Korea, I finally watch a drama about war time in Japan when they're being occupied. No matter where the war is, ultimately, it's the common folks that suffer and have to live with hardships during and after the war.
"Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni" also known as "In This Corner of the World" follows the story of our female lead, Suku, as she marries into the Hojo family and moves from Eba (Hiroshima) to Kure. As with most Japanese dramas, the pacing of this drama is fast, and actually a little too fast for my taste. I don't usually ask for more episodes, but for this drama, I would have loved to have more, and have the drama spend some time exploring stories of the supporting characters.
Though romance is not the main focus of this drama, we witness the sweet romance between Suku and Shusaku. They get married after meeting once when they were little, and have to start a romantic and marital relationship at the same time. There are some heartwarming moments, and surprisingly a few kisses (which I didn't expect in a period drama). However, I would have liked to see the drama dedicate a little more time on how they slowly fall in love and how they resolve one of their first marital disagreements regarding Suku's best friend, Tetsu. In a way, I understand why Shusaku would arrange for Suku to spend time with Tetsu when he visited. On the other hand, it's not something that a wife would appreciate. Their reconciliation happened too fast without really discussing how each other feels. I was hoping for more. The drama also didn't spend much time on Suku's knowledge of Shusaku and Rin's relationship, and no discussion between the married couple about it.
We didn't see much of how Suku gets accustomed to her new life in Kure. In a blink of an eye, a month passed by and she made new friends. I've been told and saw a few of her absent-mindedness, but I wanted to see more of her struggles to fit into her new life. I am also interested in earning more about ML's sister, Keiko and her family life. We know she disagrees with her in-laws, but I would like scenes of her son and in-laws, and maybe flashback moments of her marriage before her husband passed away. Additionally, I want more of Tetsu. How was his life in the navy, and was he thinking of Suku before decided to stop by unannounced and visit her?
"In This Corner of the World" focuses on Suku's life before and after she got married, and struggles during wartime. The plot is predictable and very similar to other dramas and movies during any war time. I wanted more in-depth storytelling. 9 episodes are not enough to tell a story that spans so many years. I also do not find the modern day timeline to be very effective in telling us the story. I think I can live without it, and just have one timeline.
Overall, it's still a good drama with pretty good acting, nice cinematography and music, but not an excellent one.

A few months ago, I watched the animated adaptation of the manga 'In This Corner of the World,' and I was certainly impressed. I didn't expect much more than another film about WWII in Japan, but it turned out to be quite different. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up buying a double volume of the original work by Fumiyo Kouno. I also checked out the voices behind each character. The protagonist, Suzu, was voiced by Rena Nōnen, who also voiced Haru in the stop-motion series 'Pokemon Concierge.' This girl, who also participates in dubbing sporadically, is an actress; in fact, she starred in one of the most successful asadoras of the past decade: ‘Amachan’ (2013). Amachan was a total discovery, and in less than a couple of weeks, I had already said goodbye to Aki Amano. Depressed by the existential void that drama caused in me, I was checking this website’s lists until I stumbled upon the live-action adaptation of In This Corner of the World. The circle had closed.The story of In This Corner of the World, in its nine episodes, takes us to Hiroshima, yet not the Hiroshima from 1945, but to the prefecture nowadays. This is one of the main differences regarding the original work, as the footage has been extended and new scenes have been added that fit perfectly with what has already been told. Kayo, a young girl tired of her current life, decides to move to the coastal city of Kure, where previously she had met up with an elderly woman who had helped her dispel the doubts and fears that usually tormented her. This woman, Setsuko, stokes Kayo’s inner flame through stories from her mother, Suzu-san. In the house at the top of the slope, where Suzu did her daily chores, Kayo fantasizes about the life during that time. In this way, memories of that period are evoked—some heartwarming, while others are of deep pain.
The life of Suzu-san, throughout the episodes, is divided into a first stage which covers her childhood and first days of her arranged marriage with her husband, Shusaku, in Hojo’s residence, until the end of war roughest events, including, obviously, the devastation and consequences caused by atomic bombs. But the main difference, not only comparingly with Western war-themed cinema, but also in relation with other films that narrate the experience from the perspective of the weaker, which is the case in ‘Firefly Graveyard’ (1988), is the idea of family bond and emotional values joined in the most absolute daily life, something that is inherently Japanese. So, the calmly days and sugar caramels will give way to grayer days and meager meals. But, independently of the events, the series reinforce the day-to-day idea of Suzu, her friends and family, in the most humble and human possible way. They were, after all, ignorant of the dimensions of what was coming in their way. Suzu is the representative of that innocence, kindness and naivety, values that little by little will crumble in the face of the cruelty to which the innocent and unaware people are subjected.
The adaptation, regard the source material, is a 1:1 copy, but adds the real component that only real people can convey. Honoka Matsumoto as Suzu is in a similar level to Non’s animated Suzu. I consider this the definitive and most satisfying version of this story, as well as featuring the music of young and unknown composer… Yeah, Joe Hisaishi.
Artifice and spectacularity are not needed to touch the heart, and this story demonstrates with great subtlety, respect, and care how to reach that corner of the world we call home.

An unflinching portrayal of the horrors and resiliences in war
This was a really good watch imo as it shows the other side of World War 2 from the Japanese perspective. Of course, its not to excuse the atrocities that the Japanese empire has done, but Japanese citizens also suffer its consequences too especially with the Hiroshima nuclear bombing. I was really impressed with the depiction of nuclear bombing victims as they really showed the charred appearance unflinchingly, which shows how cruel the use of nuclear weapons can be.The romance was really cute too as the main couple were very reserved but they are good folks who are trying to make do with the trying situation. The acting for Suzu (FL) was spot on, I really felt the pain when she lost her arm while also blaming herself for causing the death of her cute niece. And it was especially heartbreaking to watch how she also lost a part of her identity when she lost her right arm since she likes to draw a lot. But I would have like to watch more from the ML since he didn't has a lot of scenes. That's why I feel that his acting was ok at best as he don't have the chance to show his acting chopes, This was a shame as I really like the actor's works.
I think the only problem I have is how the first misunderstanding between the main couple was resolved quite quickly and I personally don't see a point to have the current scenes added. Felt more gimmickly than adding any value to the plot. Some commenters were saying how they don't like how the main couple didn't address their issue with Rin but I feel that it was very Japanese to do that as they were known to do these kind of ambiguous storytelling, which I am fine with it. The music was good but unmemorable imo. Overall, I think this was a really good show and worth rewatching it again.

Touching historical drama of a family and Hiroshima
I decided to watch this drama having enjoyed Matsuzaka's other dramas〜 episode 1 has a slow gentle start、I was expecting more impact of historical events to be show in the drama but initially it sets the scene of a provincial family's story but it more than makes up for this as the series progresses to the awful climax of the Hiroshima bombing： the the settings, costume, production are very authentic〜I like the ML and FL： both very pretty and Matsumoto honaka has nice character but all the characters including the support actors and actresses I can really empathise with。 very much recommended if you will like serious historical drama and becoming attached to the lives and futures of a family living through the personal and historical events of its era〜Was this review helpful to you?
La prueba de que se pueden hacer buenos live action
La historia gira en torno a una chica nacida en Hiroshima llamada Suzu que, en el contexto de la segunda guerra mundial, intenta mantenerse positiva junto a su familia para poder salir adelante. Obviamente, la falta de recursos y el hecho de que cada vez más personas sean enviadas al campo de batalla complica mucho las cosas, pero eso no la hace bajar los brazos.Originalmente había visto la película animada (que me parece preciosa y se las súper recomiendo), por lo que cuando vi que existía una versión live action me dieron muchas ganas de ver qué onda (sobre todo porque no me parecía una historia "difícil" de trasladar a este formato, no es que estamos hablando de Dragon Ball, por ejemplo). Pero bueno, si bien es cierto que algunas partes son un poco cuestionables o están representadas de una forma que te dejan en plan "¿qué acaba de pasar?", la realidad es que en general me gustó muchísimo esta versión de "In this corner of the world". La esencia de la historia se mantuvo a la perfección, la elección de los actores me pareció buena y el ritmo de la trama es tranquilo, pero muy entretenido.
??Pasando a otra cosa, los efectos especiales usados en algunos momentos me hicieron un poco de ruido, pero dejando eso de lado, la ambientación está muy bien lograda. Cada vez que mostraban un lugar en el presente y después te lo mostraban en 1944/1945 me asombraba lo bien que habían logrado recrearlo.
Ahora sí, dejando de lado lo técnico, los personajes me encantaron, tanto los principales como los secundarios. Suzu es una bella protagonista y, si bien te puede desesperar en algunas ocasiones, es imposible no involucrarte con todo lo que le pasa. Shusaku, por otro lado, tiene una personalidad tranquila y tímida que me hizo quererlo mucho. Pero si tengo que elegir a la estrella de esta sección, tiene que ser Rin, una chica de la que no les quiero hablar mucho para no spoilearles nada.
En fin, una serie tranquila y (en general) realista, con actores buenos, un ritmo entretenido y un tono optimista. Muy recomendable, la disfruté mucho.
