KDrama Classic - A-hole RICH BOY Hero arch for the Homely Poor Girl

what can I say other than you have to watch this because it’s one of the classics.

content warning: abusive behavior, kidnapping, violence, cringy relationships, second lead syndrome

Homely poor girl teaches a-hole rich boy how to become a better person. it’s got some over the top acting, the songs get stuck in your head, and you wish the FL would choose the SML instead of the ML!

it’s got all the things you want in a KDrama:
slow motion first meeting
many damsel in distress moments where the ML and SML rescue her
sassy but annoying at times FL
back hugs
flashbacks
many kilig (Filipino word for the feeling of eeeeeeeee🥰🤩) moments

I really haven't seen many KDs as good as this one. The acting is awesome!!! I fell in love with Kim Joon because of this drama and started listening to his music. If you have the chance, then you should really check it out!!!

EDIT: I have watched tons of dramas since watching this. I admit at the time, I thought it was great. Now, after watching it again and other versions, I realize it wasn't that great. The acting is still the best part of it. The story is fine except Jan Di's character. She is just blah!!! I liked her character in other versions better. Anyway, just amending my review to match how I feel about this drama in the present. I still love Kim Joon though. :-)

Toxic and frustrating

Ummmmm so yeah one of the worst shows I’ve watched it’s a classic but not a good one. I’m not a fan of any of the adaptations of this series It’s stupid and unnecessary drama like almost at the end he loses his memory for a short ass while like tf was that so unnecessary the whole show is toxic the ML and the Sml their debates who she should have end up with but their both toxic especially the ml is a bully I don’t get how she can fall for any of them she’s so stupid and naive very frustrating to watch

Boys Over Flowers was the first K-Drama I ever watched and it has stuck with me ever since. From Gu Jun Pyo's curly hair to Geum Jan Di's adorable antics, the story leaves awestruck and the screenplay holds you captive. The way of presentation is lovely and the story is very interesting.

The thing I didn't like about the serial is the excessive and unnecessary dragging/stretching towards the end of the serial. It tends to get very confusing at the end with Ga Eul and Yi Jung's story. Jun Pyo's mother is honestly very irritating. Personally, I didn't like Ji Hoo as a character even though he was good as a person.

The music of the series is amazing! My favorite songs from the series are: Luck, Almost paradise(title track), Stand By Me and Because I'm Stupid. They're so good that I still listen to them after almost five years and every time I listen to them, I replay a part of this serial in my head.

I have seen the serial twice already and I'm on my way to watch it again! That's how good it is! I highly recommend all of you to watch it.

This has got to be the most convoluted, contrived, frustratingly annoying drama I have ever had the displeasure of watching. I went into this show with an open mind having seen Flower Boy Next Door and relatively enjoying it. When I found out flower boys was a series I figured why not go back to the original. I had no idea of the popularity of the series when it was originally released and I supposed still is to this day.

When it comes to TV/Movies I know there has to be a certain level of suspension of disbelief from the audience. I am well aware of it and capable of it to a certain extent. That extent ends where sexual assault begins. And also I am so over the I'm an asshole because I have mommy and daddy issues and I'm lonely, but because I'm handsome and random ass side characters who eventually disappear, tell you not to give up on me you'll let it slide bs.

This show actually fairs well until about the 5th episode when the main female protagonist begins to decline from this kick ass girl who actually stands up for herself and eventually turns into the biggest Mary Sue and damsel in distress in my K-Drama journey. Hell I'd venture to say in any drama I've seen. The show throws her into ridiculous situations that cause her to need to be protected and saved at any given moment. I mean practically every character that comes in contact with her turns into a knight in shining armor for her. Eventually I could care less about any of her situations because you knew someone was right around the corner to save her. Jan Di has a problem? No worries it'll be solved in .02 seconds. Jan Di has a wish or desire? No worries it'll be granted faster than you can say Mary Sue.

The show also asked so much from the audience emotionally when it came to Jan Di. It's like they wanted you to feel sorry for her EVERY episode. The girl cried so much that I actually started believing that her tears were like a source of oxygen for her, she needed it to survive. This show is too damn long to spend it feeling sorry for the main female every episode. I'm not emotionally capable of that. I'd rather spend my time rooting for a character than feeling sorry for one. The opportunities to actually root for her were few and far between. She couldn't solve her own problems, but somehow she's the solution to everyone else's.

The secondary characters are actually where this show had a little something something to work with. I spent the majority of the show wishing that Ga Eul was the main female character. She was a breath of fresh air although she was not without issues. Her and Yi Jung's relationship faired a lot better than the two main relationships of the show. Although that scene with Ga Eul, Yi Jung and his father did piss me off thoroughly.

Woo Bin deserved a better storyline. Or maybe just a storyline because he was pretty much an extra besides that super random storyline that he got. I won't spoil it for people who decide for whatever reason to watch this show, but it was so contrived.

Anyway I managed to finish this show because of Ji Hoo (he was sweet. Naive, but sweet) Ga Eul and Yi Jung.

The acting was definitely nothing to write home about. A lot of the actors struggled with emotional scenes so they weren't as hard hitting as the director probably wanted them to be.

I cannot recommend this show as a good show, but if you're drawn to damsels or assholes and/or want to live vicariously through Jan Di and have hot guys save you this show might be for you. If not, please save your sanity and your time and watch a different drama. If you want to watch a flower boy show, watch Flower Boy Next Door, it's better (not great, but better).

Last, but not least Kim Bum has a killer smile.

This is one OVERRATED DRAMA. I do recommend watching it at some point however, considering it is a very classic drama and contains basically everything a steriotypical K-drama possesses: jealous/evil mother-in-law on the males side, perfect parents on the females side, rich boy-poor girl, bad boy-good girl, a love triangle, a one-sided love, a strong-willed independent girl, a bad boy turned good who then obsesses over the girl while she rejects him repeatedly but at the same time accepts him? Yup confusing. Just BEWARE and prepare to be let down by how much this drama DRAGS the story on, seriously wasting people's time, and then the ending is basically a cliffhangers in itself that leaves you with questions unanswered. This is very steriotypical K-drama with a very predictable plot-line, it has its cute moments (which is the reason i recommend watching it) but again, IT DRAGS ON, in order to get to the cute parts, you'll have to have a lot of time on your hands. Once i got done this drama i felt empty, cheated and guilty for spending so much time on it.

Boys Over Flowers is what I would consider a gateway drama. The show was so interesting that it opens the world of K Dramas. I enjoyed the acting and the story line about finding love where it's wouldn't usually be.

Defenitly out of the 4 versions that I've watched this one was the best. At times though I found my self hoping that the second leading man would be the one to keep the girl. Also I kinds hoped they could've choosen a prettier or younger female for the main role. Still this small things did not stop me for being completely hooked on the drama I couldn't stop watching it. It was funny, cute, romantic, sad, and adorable. Everything you can expect out of a Kdrama. I highly recommended for everyone it has some serious eye candy and the story was also very well written a few minor twists from the other versions still I liked it very much the actors did an excelent job at it.

Story: Despite this being one version of many from other countries it is really different. They took the same base line, poor girl in a rich school who gets involved with F4, and twisted it. Out of all the different versions this one is definitely more glamorous. Tons of sports cars, lots of vacations and exaggerated events. It was really exciting to watch this show and figure out what would happen. The mother is so much more evil than the one in the Japanese version and it added to the drama. I was at the edge of my seat most of the time, wondering what would happen next.

But it’s not only about the drama, the romance was exceptional too. With 25 episodes nothing felt rushed or forced. It all seemed natural. It was fun to see her fall in love with Jun Pyo and stay close with Ji Hoo.

That’s the good thing about 25 episodes, everything is evenly spaced and not forced or rushed. On the bad side it stirs up some impatience and you might find yourself wanting to rush through because it is a very, very long drama. But a really good one.

Music: Being a fan of Kpop, I loved the soundtrack. It includes songs from SHINee and SS501. It was really interesting to hear them, though they felt a bit over played towards the end.

Cast/Acting: The boys of F4 did a wonderful job. They seemed really close, like actual friends instead of actors. Not to mention, they’re all hot. Hye Sun was wonderful. I admit I didn’t like her at first, I thought she wasn’t very pretty. But my opinion changed after the show and after seeing what she looks like girlish instead of tomboyish.

One of the best dramas I have ever seen. Regretably I must say there are many yet. Never the less I know something good when I see it.

The Story is outstanding. Giving me so much emotions that I just cant stop the drama. I also love that its a long drama.

The Acting and Cast. Well You have some of the best male actors in drama. Lee Minho for gods sake. Whats more to ask? Even thought Im not the biggest fan of him, sorry but you dont argue about the taste is an old Estonian saying. I did wish that Jan Di was more cute and girly but then again someone like that wouldnt change Joon Pyo. There is anoughter problem with Jan Di. Even though shes a tough little cracker she got on my nerves sometimes.

The Music was a bit funny for me. Almost Paradise... I dont know how to put it. But it grew to me and I started liking it. Maybe the fact that they played the song every god damn time you could see the F4, is the reason it got on my nerves. Other songs were better.

I dont really Rewatch dramas as there are so many good dramas that I havent watch yet that I dont have time. But I guess this drama I would watch if there werent anything new .

Overall Boys Before Flowers is a must watch if you enjoy school romance dramas with a good girl and a bad boy that will turn aout good.

First I have to say though I only watched it once since even until now I can still remember every detail clearly. This drama was the one that brought me into my drama addiction. Because I loved it so much I even watched all the others versions and yes the korean version is the best of all. The actors were excellent and even if you were on the side of Ji hoo you still couldn't hate jun pyo because lee min ho portraited a perfect, rich boy who fell madly in love with a poor girl. And This F4 was really what F4 stands for flower boys. The places were amazing you liked it, it's not one of these dramas where you have to focuse on the actors because you only watched it because of them you could actually ENJOY it. From setting to fashion everything was perfect. And the story? it was funny, romantic, dramatic, the cinderella story.

Ok, I'm afraid many of you might not agree with my review, but I'm just being honest here.

Story. Well... er... how should I put this? At first, I thought it was pretty good, since this was the first drama that I have ever watched. But then after you've watched many other amazing dramas with the same type of storyline, you'll find that it is quite cliché. So basically, what I'm saying is, this drama is just another one of those stories where two guys are fighting over a girl. Believe me, there are many better dramas with this specific plotline. To name one specifically, one of Lee Min Ho's other dramas, City Hunter. I'm sorry, but I thought City Hunter was much better~ ^^" And I'm quite positive that most other people who have watched both these dramas would agree with me.

Acting/Cast. I don't know what happened, but the acting was either exaggerated, or- No wait, it was mostly exaggerated. Especially the female lead for Geum Jan Di... I don't know why, but her acting just never clicked for me. And Ji Hoo... it wasn't his fault, but I just didn't like his personality. So why did I give it an 8? Because I feel as though it was not the actors, but the storyline's fault. This definitely DID NOT do justice to any of the actors. I've seen at least one other drama/movie of every single lead, and supporting actor, and they all have amazing talent. In fact, Kim Hyun Joong and Kim Bum are one of the most well known actors. And not to mention Lee Min Ho... wow.

Music? It was really good. I have many of the OST's in my iTunes and listen to them in my free time because they actually sound quite good. I was impressed.

Rewatch value. Here goes my rant. I hardly ever rewatch any dramas or movies, no matter how good they are. I have made a few exceptions to some exceptional dramas, but not this one. It took all of my self control just to be able to finish it. They definitely lengthened it way too much. In fact, I was extremely disappointed. The female lead wavered so much, and each episode, it was either one of them or the other cheating on someone. It frustrated me. I mean, if they loved each other so much, they could've at least trusted each other a bit more. Ok, end of rant.

Overall, I still give it a 7, because of some Lee Min Ho moments in there~ X3 Also, I was quite impressed with Kim Bum, as this was the first drama I've seen him in, and he does have a cute baby face~ ^^
