A Romantic and Quick Historical Watch — If You Can Handle the Ending

There is one main reason I started watching this drama, and it’s because our (perpetually) second lead male actor Mi Re/Merxat is finally in one of his first leading roles. After completing this drama, I truly have a lot of mixed and bittersweet feelings. Overall (without spoiling anything) I believe this show's strengths include the performances and the overarching plot, although some viewers may take issues with the ending of the series.

Some aspects viewers may like about the drama include:

♡ An Overbearing Yet Powerless King: Merxat does a really great job making Yuwen Yong possessive and quite “black belly,” while also showing how vulnerable he is. You see from the beginning how he is physically and emotionally suffering even though he holds the position of Emperor, and also how few people he has around him that truly care for him. I think this makes the plot itself quite interesting, especially since part of the storyline is not only focused on the romance, but also how he and Liu Jing/Jing'er navigate an environment that is literally and figuratively poisoning him. I have to say that Merxat's portrayal of the ML was very well done, especially with both the emotional and romantic scenes.

♡ A Smart, Mischievous, and Talented FL: Probably one of the best aspects of this drama is its portrayal of women. The female lead Jing'er has her own dreams and aspirations, which do contribute to her romance with Yuwen Yong, but also give her agency and personality separate from their love together. Jing'er not only uses her abilities to help Yuwen Yong, but also works hard to improve herself in order to achieve her own dreams. Most of all, her skills often end up either saving her or the Emperor, and often come in handy whether it be to protect herself or to uncover some of the broader political conspiracies in the palace.

♡ A Romance That Stands the Test of Conflicts: While Yuwen Yong often does some things that can be problematic, such as threatening to make sure Jing'er never leaves, in fact he deeply worries about her and the drama makes it clear that he falls for Jing'er first. I love how in a way their romance and chemistry felt a lot more adult, even if they start off by bickering and misunderstanding each other’s feelings. Merxat does a great job at being a devoted ML, and the drama also shows how both Jing'er and Yuwen Yong are lovers who are mutually equal in competence, despite their differences in status. They work together to solve problems, navigate the political conflicts that arise within the palace, and to support each other with their individual strengths in such a dangerous environment.

♡ Loveable Side Casts: Yuwen Zong plays an adorable and naive little brother, and I found it refreshing that he and Yuwen Yong had an overall supportive and loving relationship in the series. Many of the side casts, from the eunuch to Liu Jing's maid, are also not only close friends and confidantes, but support the main characters together as they go through different challenges. I also surprisingly really loved the tragic love story between the enemies Dugu Cheng and Tang Wan, and felt that they had great chemistry together, and that their screen time was tastefully done and well integrated into the overarching drama. While there are definitely characters that are more hateful, including some of Yuwen Yong’s concubines, I liked how some of the side characters were truly friends with the main cast.

♡ Short Length: The show is not draggy, and I think it really benefited from being a relatively short length as well as adapted from a novel. It’s overall very easy to watch and digestible, especially if you want a historical drama that has a balance of politics and romance without being too complex. I was able to follow the overarching political schemes of the drama without getting bored, and I think the number of episodes is very suitable for the storyline.

However, there are also some things that may be an issue or less enjoyable for viewers:

♥ Casting: I think there was some miscasting going on, or at least I was a little confused about some of the cast choices in this show. Gong Mi looks a little more mature than some of her castmates, and I wished they had simply incorporated this into the script (i.e. made her older than Yuwen Yong) instead of giving her a personality of a young and innocent girl who is still unaware of the world. I think it’s refreshing to have more mature and older women cast as female leads, and therefore I wished that they had just made this into part of the drama. Not to mention that much of the supporting cast, especially Yuwen Zong, looked significantly younger than the main cast. In other words, I think because of the casting sometimes I couldn’t tell whether this show was deciding to go into a youth romance drama territory, or wanted to delve into a more adult historical romance.

♥ Ending: Without revealing too much about the ending, what I will say is to be prepared for a conclusion that may potentially not satisfy you, and also closes off the possibility of a second season. I personally found it a bit strange that the directors decided to take the drama in this direction, because this drama fits a certain niche (light and romantic historical romcom) where this type of ending has not yet been done. At the same time, I emphasize that I was spoiled about the ending before I made the decision to watch this drama, and likely if I had known that this would be the outcome I may not have committed as much time to watching this show. I highly recommend you check out some of the spoilers to prepare yourself if you are considering watching this.

♥ Genre: Again, this is related to the ending, but I felt as if the drama couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a lighter and fluffier romantic drama, or if it wanted to be more introspective and angsty. There are many parts that are fluffy and sweet, but as we get to the latter stretch of the drama it navigates into serious tragedy territory. In other words, I feel as if this drama targeted an audience that may be looking for fluff, but then I warn to prepare yourself for the last five episodes, which deviate quite a lot from the sweetness of the earlier episodes.

♥ Production Value: It’s pretty clear that this is really low budget, even amongst the other dramas that fit the niche of short historical romcom. Some similar dramas that also are part of this genre include Oops the King is in Love (2020), Dr. Cutie (2019), My Dear Destiny (2020), The Love by Hypnotic (2019), and Love Better Than Immortality (2019). And I have to say that out of all these dramas, in this drama the sets and clothes were by far much less high-quality compared to the titles I’ve listed. You can sometimes see very clearly where the longer wig pieces attach to the back of the head, as well as how the majority of the costuming and backdrops are made out of cheaper materials. I also didn’t find much of the music or OST very memorable, which I found to be quite rare for a historical drama. While this is a matter of taste, I also note that the drama went for a more saturated and darker colouring, compared to the usual more pastel tone of shows in this genre.

This was a watch that I found to be relatively good for passing the time, especially while waiting in-between for other shows that were airing. It doesn’t drag much because of the episode length, has solid acting, and I really liked seeing Merxat on screen after such a long time as the male lead. At the same time, however, I would caution viewers about the ending, as well as some of the limits of the series with the lower production value. If you have the time and are interested in a binge-able romantic historical drama, then I would recommend you try this out while taking cautious note of some of its issues.

I watched this drama on a limb without much expectations bc I was waiting for Song of Glory and bc I really like Merxat lol. I really enjoyed this drama and I think it was partly bc I didn't have high expectations but it was really enjoyable (I finished this drama in 2 days lol).

Story: The story is literally Fake Princess meets Legend of Yunxi. The beginning is Fake Princess while the ending is Legend of Yunxi. However, I think that despite the story not being original, it was still good. It's like watching a parody or rendition of those dramas. Since it's a short drama, the problems are resolved rather quickly which was really nice lol (longer dramas need to do this); there wasn't any point in the drama where anything was too dragged out. The ending is literally fast paced Legend of Yunxi but I mean I don't mind it and also expected it bc it gave the FL importance you know. She had to save him or else war or something bad in the kingdom would happen without a king. What I will say is the scriptwriter could've made the ending more well rounded instead of giving us flashbacks, like we should've gotten a reaction from ML. However, it was a bittersweet ending and I also enjoyed the flashback bc it complimented the "sweetness" to the ending and her life like she died in her lover's arms and was reminded by all the better memories they had together which made me teary eyed lol. I also didn't like how he almost raped her like twice (this should not be romanticized but bc I knew it happened historically, I closed an eye but honestly dramas should stop doing this).

Characters & Acting: The FL is smart which is highly appreciated since there are a lot of dramas like this where the FL is just flat out stupid and annoying. The FL is cute and funny and she doesn't overdo it which was also enjoyable. I just didn't like how when ML was kissing her all she did was open her eyes mad wide and not kiss back like girl are you okay? ML was great (I am a little bias bc I really love Merxat lol) but I think his role was good. He was romantic when we needed him to be romantic, he was smart when we needed him to be smart, he was soft and cute but was also strong and brave. The main couple really complimented each other. What I will say I didn't really like from them was their emotional crying scenes, it did make me sad with them but it wasn't enough to make me cry with them. The second couple was okay but I feel like their acting was a bit awkward, especially when she accidentally killed him. I didn't like how although she's suppose to be a strong character but kept getting sick/hurt like girl? I recommend you find another career path. Other than that, their romance was nice but bc of how limited their screentime was, it felt rushed like how did he love her so quickly? I love the supporting characters (even the bitchy consorts in the kingdom), especially the eunach and the king's general as well as FL's maid (she's very cute/ I wanted a love interest for her lol).

Cinematography: The filming was really well done for what's considered a low budget production. The color pallet was easy on the eyes with a lot of pastels and bright colors. The editing was a little bit weird bc when one episode ends on one note, the next brings us to another. Also the editing for the main couple was a bit weird like we see so many scenes where they're sweet to each other towards the end of the episode but then it just fades out like bro we're here for the romance so give it to us. The fighting scenes were okay but not the best but for a drama like this where it's not action heavy is plausible.

Overall: I recommend it if you enjoyed Fake Princess and Legend of Yunxi and if you're a fan of Merxat lol. I think this drama is worth a shot, especially if you have nothing else to watch. The ending is not my favorite but when you've been watching Chinese dramas for so long, you would know Chinese scriptwriters never want a happy ending for the leads. It's fast paced and straight forward. I think you should definitely give this drama a try!

Actually pretty good !

I had no expectations for this drama and was just skipping through alot of dramas to find something to watch and I thought I would probably skip this after like 5 minutes. But 5 mins led to 10 mins and I ended up watching the whole of ep 1. Then one ep after another and before you know, I am a ep 24!!!
So I am pleasantly surprised I enjoyed it so much and the only reason I even clicked into the drama was because of the Merzat whom I recognised from other dramas.
I do think this was worth the 2 days I spent watching it and I am sure many would too so I suggest giving it a try. It kind of grows on you and once you power through ep 1 and 2, you will find it compelling to watch it to the end.

It's like riding a rollercoaster but instead of the big dip you were expecting, the ride just ends.

Have an iQiyi sub and started watching out of curiosity.
If you are like me and kiss scenes are important to you + and love male leads that pine for their lover, read on.

Story: Lighthearted as it goes, some parts even made me laugh. Typical palace intrigues but there were some plot holes that were bothering me (shouldn't the emperor have more power than a general?) As a romantic drama, there was good focus around the main two characters, and I also liked that the drama was not too long either, which is atypical of historical C-dramas which can get long and draggy. I was left wanting and waiting to watch the next episode as soon as I finished one.

A major reason why I took points off was because I felt like the GREAT dramas have off tangent, but related plots that develop alongside. There was none of this. Also, the last 3 episodes felt like everything happened at once and these were MAJOR plot developments, and the story just ends there. What you may have expected to happen did not, and it just kind of feels like the director wanted to wrap things up quickly and call it a day.

Acting/Cast: Acting was great, I liked the actors and their characters and felt all sorts of feelings towards the characters appropriately.

Music: Average? Nothing to shout about, but it was definitely put in places where it needed to be. No memorable OSTs, but no heavy repeating of 1 song over and over again (that can end up super annoying and make scenes predictable - kdrams are guilty of this)

Rewatch value: Would not rewatch this because it doesn't really matter in the end.

Production: Just a small note to add that I don't normally include in my reviews. I noticed that I could see the wig lines for the Main lead, and that really affected the immersion for me. Historical chinese dramas always have beautiful sets and this wasn't an exception but the makeup artist needs to be fired because I could see the plaster on the actors' face.

Overall: This drama is the 'what could have been'. After all the investment that you put in throughout the episodes, one can't help but feel like you are left with confusion and a little bit of pain, which could have been intentional to keep you thinking about it (because I am). But the bitter taste that's left in my mouth is certainly not what I'm looking for after I've been served all sorts of sweet and salty before. I am left thoroughly confused, and not in a great way.

hard to handle, and this drama is kind of a tragedy

at first this was rlly light hearted and simple. it did get rlly boring of some parts so i skipped quite a bit but this got kinda dark

SPOILER ALERT*

there was this part that got me real mad like never been this mad before its where she gets into the cold palace i was like dying and so god damn angry and the ending is tragedy like killing so many ppl and did he notice the poison on her thing???

No spoiler part:
there was no real plot/story(line) it was more of a starting point and not rlly important until a little later on

Overall: if you can handle a lot of pain tragedy then you might like it i rated it a 1 which seems very mean of me but im just mad rn

edit: btw when i meant i rated it a one it wasnt in the review just for the drama but anyways the WRITING was not good there were a lot of same words/phrases used which almost felt like they were trying to make it their signature words/words the characters use a lot but i think they just didnt do their research and their wording werent so great of course if you use captions you might not have this problem. but another issue was where they included the cure thing and her grandfather but they didnt make use of that or take advantage of their recourses or what they created in the drama and finish it off, it could be the budgeting issues and or time issues but its not rlly an excuse the writings werent so great either they forgot quite a lot of things but whatever. not the first nor last drama that does this.

quick note: "princess weiyoung" is the drama i can think of rn to compare the endings to now they had the audacity to do that but i actually like the ending mainly bc it was realistic and for "for married doctress"had their chance to find the lost cure by her grandfather while in princess weiyoung this was just a better ending bc it is kinda ridiculous to make miracles out of nowhere ex love the way you are the ml girl secretary "has cancer" dude whyyy the coincidence is just quite stupid and yk not just this drama a lot of dramas make the person a same name with a disease or illness and do this its annoying. anyways you should check out the dramas anyways to see for yourself definetly have to watch princess weiyoung and as in for love the way you are is just unnessesary but for married doc. is only if you can handle the terrible stuff that happens.

The worst lace front wigs

Story: It wasn’t a strong script and the actors did do the best they could do with that they had. Because it was only 24 episodes and the episode were shorter then 30 mins it just didn’t seem like enough time to actually give us anything substantial. I font like the romance drama but the romance in this show didn’t seem…right. Like it seemed like they needed more. Why did the emperor love her so fast? Yea she’s pretty, but I’m sure there is more to loving someone than just looks. I was quite upset by how fast things was in the end. It was too fast, and not enough closure. Things were happening right after another, and there needed more time to space things through. I think ending the last episode like that was begging stupid, and it angered me. We finally got the boyish happiness back with Yuwen yong. He was smiling, his eyes were sparkling. He looks healthy and was glowing. He was SO EXCITED to think about forever. To think about his kids and his future with her. And she just dies. She doesn’t even give him time to talk about how much he loves her. She just dies IN HIS LAP. I can’t even imagine what he went though. And then to give us a STUPID musical montage about it. I wanted to see Yuwen yong just break. I needed that emotional ending. To go from she’s dying, musical montage, she’s dead, mystic montage, ending credits was a waste. It was a worst version of the ending of Legend of Yunxi (merxat do you see a trend?) . It was a romantic comedy for most of the show and it just went downhill. I also want to scream about the lace front on Merxat. I get he is a bit tanner then other people but could they have not gotten the wig to sit better? It put me off with the immersion that I could see the plaster and the lace on his face. I even saw his hair underneath the wig in the last episode. Which made me not pay attention to the fact she was DYING. Also his makeup was inconsistent in the same exact scenes. he normally has pretty pink lips so when they cover it with concealer to make him look sick, it was obvious. Then 5 seconds later his lips were pink again and his natural skin tone was there.
Acting/Cast : I think Gong Mi and Merxat held it down. But Gong Mi was so mature looking that the even possibility of her being with Zhao'er was weird. Especially since she was so immature and irrational, that it seemed more like a grown adult who acted like a teenager. Her temperament would have fit more with zhao'er then with yuwen yong. Otherwise she did what she needed to do. And she was able to showcase her emotions correctly without making it cringy. I am a huge merxat fan so i might be biased, but he did good. He is someone who will put his 110% into something no matter how big or small the part is. I only watched this show for him, so I am glad he was good in it. He was really able to showcase essentially the different sides of Yuwen Yong and make it feel natural. He is possessive, a walking red flag. But he also loves her genuinely and has a boy-ish part of him that's not seen often. You can see the internal strife in him most of the time, when something switches and he can go from calm to being dominant the next moment. It is not his best role but it is a very good job he did.
Music: Hmmmm nothing memorable. It was a romance ost where they were trying to make it too modern at times.
Rewatch Value: not a rewatchable show. when you end the show wth such a jarring ending it really makes things feel lackluster. I knew how it ended before i finished it and I was like "when she gonna die?". It doesn't hit the same.
Overall: can we get a show where merxat actually gets a girl in the end? it is getting old fast, and kind of rude. overall, the low budget of the drama was obvious throughout the show. it was upsetting since it was a good cast. it is not the worst show I've watched but its upsetting. it was a waste of merxat's talent because i know he can do so much with his skills. i will be fighting his manager over this. he was very handsome in this role, even though his makeup and wig were so bad. I will forever be crying over him in the armor though, my favorite outfit. otherwise, eh. watch it if you like cheesy romances with some death. its a quick watch.

Me incomoda essa solução magica.
