Very fun movie to watch
If you are looking for something to watch that will give you a good laugh, this is the movie you are looking for. A fun movie to watch with the whole family. This one is different from the first Pirates movie since everything is different.
The visual effects are better than the first movie and they made use of cg for the animals instead of using real ones. They've shown a lot of effects this time especially the fire, water, and lightning.
The actors are really great. All did their parts well even those supporting casts with little screen time. Everyone delivered well. Hands down most especially to Kang Haneul and Kwon Sangwoo. Their fight scenes are so good it will put you at the edge of your seat. Lee Kwangsoo is indeed really funny. Most of the funny parts came from him.
Highly recommended to watch.

Good source of fun and laughter
This movie gave me tons of laughter. Almost all of the comedic parts came from Kang Haneul and Lee Kwangsoo and they both delivered well. None of the cast did awfully. Everyone did a great job regardless of how big and small their parts. Even Sehun who barely had lines and just stood at the corner did well. The fight scenes between Kwon Sangwoo and Kang Haneul is so great. It brought a lot of tension to the movie. Han Hyojoo did well too as the pirate captain . I wish they showed more of the back story between Muchi and Bu Heungsu especially how they became rebels and bandits. But overall, the story was nice and easy to grasp the flow. The special effects are so good too. This is a good movie to watch even kids would definitely enjoy it.Was this review helpful to you?
Somewhat disappointing
I've been waiting for this movie since it was announced. I'm a big fan of pirates (blame Robert Louis Stevenson). I love a great swashbuckling adventure. I'm still waiting. The story was nothing new. In movies and TV pirates seek treasure. That's what they do, so I wasn't expecting much on that front. It's in the telling and what happens from point A to point B that makes the story worthwhile. Given the period, they attempted to bring in something(s) about Goryeo, but I didn't find it particularly interesting or believable. The special effects are great. I can't complain about the production at all. It's the lacklustre script, recycled lines, and all around poor writing that I have an issue with.
The cast was good. Lee Kwang Soo (and to some extinct Kim Sung Oh) may have been cast for comic relief, but Kang Ha Neul was laugh out loud funny. I have much love and respect for Lee, Kim and Kang, but this movie did them no favors. I think all 3 are phenomenal actors, however, LKS and KSO's talents were wasted. It seems to me they only cast LKS due to his betrayer character from Running Man. I wouldn't have blinked had Yoo Jae Suk made some kind of cameo. LKS does really well branching out and getting different roles in movies. My fear is that this one will set him back. KSO was just underutilized from start to finish. The rest of the cast including the female lead was fine.
The music was actually pretty good. It led to the suspense. The rewatch is maybe a 4. I'm not a rewatcher, but this is also had English dubs and I may check it out.
Overall, I would only recommend this to someone looking to pass 2 hours. Or just looking at something they truly don't have to think about. Like I said the effects are very good. And it is an adventure (and a comedy). If I had to compare it to another movie, I'd say Pirates of Penzance minus the singing rather than Pirates of the Caribbean (and it's definitely not Treasure Island). I'd say watch it if you love someone(s) in the cast. Watch it if you're just wanting to watch something. Do not watch it if you're looking for a grand adventure with pirates that look more likely to break out into a jaunty ditty than stab and steal your gold.

An awfully ridiculous plot
There was so much of hype for this movie, but in the end it failed to impress me.It's the classic case of "Great Cast doesn't guarantee you a good movie".
The cast of this movie was quite impressive and to be fair, all managed to do a very good job as far as acting is concerned. But when you stuff all these magnificent actors in one single movie, there's high chance that the script is not gonna do justice with all of them.
Can't blame the efforts of actors, though. Han Hyo-joo was very beautiful as a pirate, and so was Kang Na-heul with his witty lines and erratic behaviour. But the one who impressed me was Lee Kwang Soo. It seems like he simply can't leave behind his image of being a betrayer behind (*pun intended).
There wasn't much to do for Kwon Sang-woo and neither for Kim Sung-oh, which was kind of a bummer as I was really looking forward to their roles, only to be disappointed at last.
Now coming to the story.
It was just awful. Characters popped out of nowhere. There was no backstory for Han Hyo-joo and was very weak in the case of Kang Na-heul. It was just the plot of the previous movie, albeit with a bit of new ingredients. Let's compare it with its prequel:-
A Pirate - check
A disgraced soldier turned bandit - check
One evil general - check
One betrayer - check
And animals rescuing the pirates - check
The story might have been good if not for so much of stuffed characters. Chae Soo-bin's character literally had no importance at all.
At last, I will say some words for the VFX. It was childish graphics. Yes, the VFX certainly improved in the last act, but overall they were very poor and one can clearly see that there are just a lot of green screens.
Overall, I was disappointed with the movie, but the cast made it a bit enjoyable. Watch it for Lee Kwang Soo, Han Hyo-joo and Kang Na-heul. If you are seeking a good story, then don't go in that direction. Better to leave your brains aside while watching this movie, as this is certainly very logicless.

The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure; A Tumultuous High-Seas Adventure?
The journey from screenplay to production has admittedly been a circuitous journey for ‘ The Pirates: The Last Treasure’. Originally intended as a sequel production for screenwriter Chun Sung Il ( ‘ Your Honor’, ‘ All Of Us Are Dead’)’s original screenplay ‘ The Pirates’ (2014), the severe impact of production problems were certainly evident onscreen.
Naturally to understand the root cause of some of the problems with ‘ The Pirates: The Last Treasure’ it is important to elucidate that the movie suffered a lot throughout its production.
A notable change of director from Lee Seok-hoon ( ‘ Dancing Queen’, ‘ The Himalayas’ ) to Kim Jung Hoon ( ‘ Petty Romance’, ‘ The Accidental Detective), original stars Son Ye-jin (‘ Crash Landing On You’, ‘ Personal Taste’ and ‘ Something In The Rain’) and Kim Nam-gil ( ‘ Bad Guy’, ‘ Live Up To Your Name’ and ‘ Fiery Priest’) abandoning ship alongside pandemic-induced delays did spell-out a lot of problems for Sung II’s production.
As a consequence of these contributions, ‘The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure’ focused upon an entirely different setup from the first movie. Set in the late 14th century in the early Joseon period, the narrative focuses upon female pirate captain Hae-rang (Han Hyo-joo- ‘ Iljimae’, ‘ W’ and ‘ Happiness’).
After coming into possession of a mysterious treasure map, Hae-rang becomes fixated upon the notion that the hidden treasure was gold sourced from the royal palace and then lost at sea. However Hae-rang is not the only one obsessed over the promise of luxurious valuables . On board her ship is a cadre of bandits, led by ringleader Wu Mu-chi (Kang Ha-neul- ‘ Monstar’, ‘ Misaeng: Incomplete Life’ and ‘ When The Camellia Blooms’).
The self-proclaimed “ Greatest Swordsman in Goryeo”, Mu-Chi begins his schemes in order to launch a coup and take over the ship.
Nevertheless when unwelcome rival Boo Heung Soo ( Kwon Sang Woo- ‘ My Tutor Friend’, ‘ Stairway To Heaven’ and ‘ Queen Of Mystery’) arrives on the scene with a keen interest in competing for the treasure, Mu-Chi and Hae-rang may just be forced into an allegiance of sorts, as betrayals and twists soon come their way…
One of the most problems with ‘The Pirates: The Last Treasure’ came through its script. As mentioned previously, the production was naturally caught in a rut after Chung Sung II was forced to rewrite parts, recast and subvert the storyline in a very short space of time.
However whilst certain excuses can be given for the film’s troubling filming and writing schedule , it’s hard to truly justify the film’s unmodified and particularly cataclysmic opening act. A barrage of rushed character introductions, predictable betrayals, sudden flashbacks and dream sequences are crammed forcefully into a very short space of time .
Indeed, instead of spreading out the narrative and allowing the structure of the film to feel circumstantial and well-paced, ‘ The Pirates: The Last Treasure’ admittedly felt somewhat disorientating and chaotic in its first half.
The second-act admittedly was less anarchic and did allow some opportunities in order to tie together a form of coherent plot, but still due to the poor buildup and structure of the movie, the final act of ‘ The Pirates: The Last Treasure’ was somewhat risible.
Of course it’s wrong it’s wrong to entirely suggest that ‘ ‘The Pirates: The Last Treasure’ wasn’t an enjoyable movie at times. Whilst it’s gnawing inconsistencies of pacing and writing were evident, ‘The Pirates: The Last Treasure’ was still fast-paced, entertaining and adrenal-infused with its swashbuckling bravado and overindulgent CGI.
Then of course there’s our main cast. Aside from some inconsistent acting moments at times in ‘ The Pirates: The Last Treasure’, Han Hyo-joo was fairly solid as main female lead Hae-rang, whilst costars Kang Ha-Neul and Kwon Sang Woo were fairly decent also.
On the other amongst the jam-packed action of ‘ The Pirates: The Last Treasure’, the array of characters onscreen felt often vacuous. Absent opportunities in order to explore or flesh out characters, in particular how a young woman became a pirate captain, was rarely developed beyond its surface level plot hook.
As for the cinematography, ‘ The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure’ offered viewers with a high-budget bonanza under the directing reigns of Kim Jung Hoon. The overall product glossy but often heavily indulging upon CGI en masse without a greater focus on shots or the art of capturing the characters in more subtle detail. The OST is an odd accumulation of tremendous scores, alongside upbeat modern bops; a surreal mixture which whilst working effectively in parts, could feel somewhat out of place in other scenes.
‘The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure’ attempted to offer viewers with a fun and action-engaged plot throughout its 126-minute duration. Nevertheless, despite some engaging performances by our main cast and some fast-paced action sequences , ‘ The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure: often felt as though it was a chaotic bricolage of poor-pacing, story direction and enforced tropes .
For those willing to overlook the flaws of ‘ The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure’, the movie offered viewers with a disorderly swashbuckling adventure filled with daring laughs and fight scenes as well as hare-brained escapades along the way…

A Funny little Treasure Hunt :')
> A group of pirates who acts like a fisherman to catch their hunt.> A Captain who shows off her beauty and sometimes sword skills.
> The main character who claims himself to be the greatest swordsman.
> A comedian who wants to be the greatest pirate captain.
> Lastly, a villain who wants to be a king.
These people come together and risk their lives for the Last Royale Treasure which they find accidentally from a map.
But why should you watch it? Because it's funny and VFX are Awsome.
And "Mom, I become a Pirate"

Been waiting for this one
As a person who has been anticipating this movie since it has been announced, I watched every bit of it with interest. Han Hyo Joo never disappoints me as she continues to drown herself in every character she gets with such ease, along with Kang Ha Neul.Quite different from the 1st Pirates movie, this one had lots of comedic scenes that made me sit and giggle in my room all alone. Calling that a mentally unstable person lol.
Don't take the movie seriously, I'm sure the path it had was just simple and to be comedic instead of full of plot and lots of action.
So take it with ease and just enjoy the cast, the comedy, the laugher and fun scenes. They all did a great job.

A nice little enjoyable adventure
The story doesn't do anything groundbreaking, but it felt fine because the movie never took itself seriously. Packed with a star studded cast, each role feels purposeful, even if a little cliche.Just don't expect anything meaningful from the movie, and you'll leave the movie with a smile. There doesn't seem to be any specific moral or message that the authors wanted to convey - just some laughs, adventure, and a sprinkle of romance.
There aren't many family friendly movies in Korea, but I applaud the risk they took with this niche concept. I expect box office to do well at least.

I had fun, but I'm biased.
Disclaimer: I'm not a huge fan of historical settings or adventure films and I watched this solely for the cast. I was excited for Sehun's film debut and I really like Soobin, Hyo Joo, Ha Neul, and Kwang Soo and enjoyed their previous performances. It was a fun watch! I had some actual laugh out loud moments. A bit random with plot progression, but I liked it. The action choreography was pretty good. The acting was on point. The CGI was also a B+, it wasn't the best but it's not bad.
Sehun's character doesn't speak much but he's doing his job quietly and serving visuals. We stan. Soobin's character fell in love at first sight when she was brought on board. We relate. They end up together and their little moments are adorable ( wish we had more).
Han Hyo Joo and Kang Ha Neul had great banter and chemistry in the start when they are battling for ultimate control as a pirate captain and bandit leader. The pirate captain FL wins and our bandit leader ML has been whipped since the start so he accepts and goes along with the arrangement. They have their fair share of bonding and at the end, Hyo Joo seals it with a kiss.
Kang Ha Neul had a brief backstory that wasn't explored but he knew the villain Kwon Sang Woo beforehand and that whole arc needed more explanation and time.
Since the start, the movie was eventful, we just dived into the conflict with some text onscreen to prompt us. Not the best for an international audience who might not know the historical eras.
The leads' backstory and more screentime for Sehun and Soobin would've been great. Since this story is set at the end of Goryeo and the start of Joseon - some people/places only mentioned via text on screen could do better with narration.
Giving it a biased 9. (I guess objectively for me it would be an 8). If the story had been a little fleshed out, it would've objectively been a 9 but currently, it kinda feels like a chronology of events rather than a full story since so much happened in 2 hours and there were so many characters whose arcs weren't fully explored. But as I already mentioned, the cast and their performances propelled it towards a 9 because I’m biased.

Treasure hunting
Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure (2022)I've been waiting for this since last year!
Likes
1. The overall mood is light with some comedy, esp when you have Kang Haneul and Lee Kwang Soo in the cast.
2. The ensemble cast isn't as impressive as the first movie but they were still a great team. Kang Haneul and Han Hyo Joo were okay as the main leads.
3. I enjoyed the second half where there were fighting, more than the first, which focused on the team dynamics and wlthe legend of the treasure.
4. I liked the penguin scene, absurd but still funny. You know this movie really isn't taking itself too seriously. Little disappointed with the dragons coz we didnt see them, just the fire.
5. Lee Kwang Soo has a major part in this movie and he never fails to bring thr laughter.
6. I like the snazzy ending track that sounds like 'Billie Jean'
7. I liked the ending where the crew would rather have love than treasure 🤣 after seeing the 2 couples together.
Dislikes
1. I wish they gave more scenes for Kwon Sang Woo. He looked badass as the bad guy but he didnt really get to do much and wasn't that scary.
2. Chae Soo Bin's character seemed out of place and was there for comic relief and a side romance for brooding Sehun.
Rating: 8/10

It’s funny and overall it’s okay…
The comedy part is the best part of the movie. It’s enjoyable and made me laugh hard. Lee Kwang Soo's character is kinda annoying sometimes but he is the funniest and he has the funniest scenes.
The romance between KHN and HHJ felt off, kind of unnecessary. Maybe would have been better without that part. But that’s just me.
At first, I thought they saw the treasures so easily but then there’s still a twist. Nice editing and good sceneries.
Although the ending between CSB and OSH is cute!
Overall it’s just an okay movie. Good movie to kill time. You can try watching it!
